Pipe Dream games, etc

Post by JBC »

This is a thread for pipe dream games/happenings in the industry that you think would be incredible but probably will never happen. Sega coming back as a hardware developer for example.

I would love it if Nintendo produced Metroid 64 for eShop. It's a game built within the constraints of the Nintendo 64 that will run on the actual hardware if you purchase a limited edition cart. If Nintendo did something like this I have no doubt it would sell out physical & sell well on the eShop. Perhaps the Switch version could have a 16:9 mode.

What crazy fantasies do you have about future games or gaming as a whole? Maybe you want a sequel to the PS2 Shinobi games or for From Software to bring back King's Field for a new era. How about a modern Bushido Blade? Be as outlandish as you want, no idea is off limits. Post your wishes below

Sony should buy their games division ala Disney/Fox & hand Silent Hill to Kojima. I think that means they would get Hudson Soft as well

I just want another F-Zero. Hell, at this point I'd settle for an HD upgrade of GX for Switch.
Been messing about trying to get RetroArch running on SNES mini just then I can play the GBA games.

Hahaha, I was expecting a Pipe Dreams (video game) thread, as well, but on topic:

Giga Wing 1, 2, and Generations plus Mars Matrix collection on current gen or PC, maybe just add in Night Raid and Kyukyoku Tiger II for the full Takumi shooting collection. Since this will never happen anyway, might as well say to add a really good practice mode in with multiple practice check points including boss practice available, online leaderboards, TATE for GWG (also NR and KTII if included), etc.

Mars Matrix or Giga Wing sequel (though Elite Mode A on DC is almost a sequel to MM, especially with BG graphics unlocked (not that you notice them too much)).

Yeah, I definitely became a huge Takumi fanboy after playing Giga Wing 2, btw, though Mars Matrix is still best.

Otherwise... How about some modern ports of ultra expensive DC shmups like Zero Gunner 2 (Switch doesn't count, yet), Border Down. Or other ultra-expensive shmups like MMP / Pink Sweets. I realize I'm not being all that imaginative here.

Speaking of Konami, I'm hoping Snake makes it into the next Smash Bros. That's as much of a pipe dream as the other things mentioned.

I'd also love for Sega to make a proper new single player Shining Force or Phantasy Star.

G.Rev

From least to most likely to actually happen:

Strania style DLC for Under Defeat (keep dreaming)

or

Under Defeat sequel (still dreaming)

or

A new helicopter themed shooter (maybe)

or

New G Rev shooter (WOOHOO)
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Not gonna touch on shooters, as pretty much anything good, especially from trusted and tried game desigers, would be welcome, and the death of Cave has been a dead horse for years.

Personally, I would love a real official follow up to Chrono Trigger, with qualities from either the original or Cross, or both. Something that invokes the charms and enjoyment of the classics, and with a production value that shows that the people who made it really cared - not to the point where it gets over-produced and soulless like FF15, but something with much more pizzazz than discount Lost Sphear crap.

Another challenging Mario game would be fun. Stop catering to the kids, make the next "Lost Levels".

A sequel to Demon's Crest (official or "spiritual sequel" or completely unrelated homage, or just something similar, I don't care) or Gargoyle's Quest, that expands on the concept and takes it all the way, with many more locations, bigger emphasis on both the RPG elements and action stages, optional "dungeons" with upgrades to be found, etc. Something epic, and with the same thick atmosphere as Demon's Crest had.

i'd love a game which really captures the atmosphere of the manga blame! with a deeply interconnected world and no or cleverly limited fast travel.

Outside of shmups, I guess I have always fantasized about an actually difficult Grandia game (though I only ever played II). Such a great battle system, and yet exploting it to its fullest (or probably not even to its fullest) kinda makes the game stupid easy. I don't know if I have the patience for RPGs any more though, and of course SRPGs are generally harder and more tactical than Grandia II, so maybe it's kinda pointless. Still loved the game back in my preteen years, tho. I even re-played it in high school, and still enjoyed.

Damn that would be awesome. Even if it was literally Super Mario All Stars 2: The Lost Levels, featuring new tough stages for SMB 1, 2, 3, & World in the original All Stars visual style. Would be a killer eShop title.

Yes to everything here. It could be modernized however they want as long as it captures the essence of the series & atmosphere of Demon's Crest.

If they didn't go full 3D then something akin to the visual style of Octopath Traveler would work well for this series, and many others.

Great post all around Sumez, agree with all of this

I'm really worried Square would fuck up a Chrono Trigger sequel though :( It's kinda ok with me that the game has no sequel, in light of that. But an amazing CT sequel would be at the top of my want list for damn sure

I, too, thought this was about Pipe Dream! I never really knew anything about that game (series?) but always saw it around BITD. Anyway, to commemorate the misunderstanding I'll post this sublimely bent boxart:

Image

Either that dude is getting PIPED IRL (not just in a dream!), or I swear that's a reference to John Carpenter's The Thing. You know, the abomination responsible the "farewell to arms" bit.

EDIT: oh Jesus Christ, is that even Pipe Dream? Sorry it's been a long day. EDIT2: yee boyee it's an alternate title! Phew that'd be embarrassing!

Oh man have I been waiting on that. Hope is probably lost though. If they did it would be in 3D or an art style very dissimilar to the original 3 or Alpha series. Sigh...

Some new REZ/Child of Eden game by Mizuguchi in VR. Not just a point and click rail shooter, something brand new and more elaborate. Possibly MMO, possibly customizable with your own content (think bridging the gap between social media, youtube, and VR chat).

Maybe it would be a 'game' where musicians, artists, and performers could set up a hub and people fly around the planet like a satellite visiting and interacting with user content. As the player base grows new planets could be inhabited and variously themed worlds would develop.

As a dance instructor I'd love the opportunity to have a full body motion capture displayed in a VR setting. Full audio/visual customization and the Mizuguchi twist, I'd be in utopia.
