Please help me capture VHS using XCAPTURE-1

Post by mikehaggar »

Hi all,

Instead of using the normal thread, I created a new one since my question isn't about game capturing and probably isn't in the other thread. A friend of mine let me borrow his XCAPTURE-1 so that I could capture some VHS home movies recorded from my childhood.

Can anybody here help me with the correct settings to use to get the best quality? I'm going to be doing lots of capturing...I want a good setting which captures at high quality, but not so high that it's just wasting disk space and not getting an actual benefit.

Thanks in advance!

The instructions from the other thread will be pretty much the same for games over composite as they will be for a VCR. You’ll need:

Capture software (AmaRecTV or VirtualDub)
A de-interlacing solution

I would suggest doing your capture with a lossless codec (UTVideo, HuffyUV, Lagarith). You will need to do a lot of iterating to get good results. VirtualDub or an editing suite like Vegas or Shotcut will let you play with color correction and cleanup. Then you can export to a good quality compression like x264.
