PS4-> HDMI->VGA adapter -> MIMO Genius II => does not work

Post by kendjet »

Hi all,

I recently purchased a few HDMI to VGA adapters through Amazon

https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B01LYJG8IQ (TechRise)
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07568ZM28 (UCOUSO)
https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00ZMV7RL2 (Rankie)

The UCOUSO adapter works fine whichever resolution I set my PS4 to, when displayed on a PC VGA CRT monitor (the oher 2 adapters didn't show any output, but maybe this is because I didn't power them (yet) using an USB cable)

The idea however was to connect my PS4 to these HDMI-VGA adapters, and then connect them to a MIMO Genius II (http://retrogaming.hazard-city.de/mimo.html), set the Mimo's output to 15kHz (240p), and connect the Mimo to a 15khz-only CRT monitor. However this doesn't work and the MIMO says something along the lines of "incompatible signal".

The MIMO works perfectly fine when I use my Xbox 360's VGA cable as its input.

Does somebody know what might be the culprit here?

Thanks in advance!

Best regards,

What resolution/refresh rate is the VGA adapter putting out, and does the Genius II support that resolution and refresh rate?

Hi,

The VGA adapters specs say then can do 1920*1200/1080@60Hz max. I think they do not mess with the resolution/refresh rate provided by the PS4.
The lowest I was able to set my PS4 to was 720x480@60Hz. I'm not sure what exactly is supported by the MIMO Genius II (can't find my manual anymore and the .pdf from their website is gone(/moved?)).
I was able to get this working by rebooting the PS4 into safe mode (although this only worked intermittently). However, the image converted to 240P by the MIMO looked horrible. The Xbox 360 works perfect with the Mimo though; maybe this is because the PS4 does not support 4:3?

I ended up using an Extron VSC 700 to convert the image to 480i and I let the Extron auto-adjust the image and now it looks really good. Adding an extra RGB Rxi with DDSP enabled to create a pseudo-240P image did not improve image quality in this case. I guess the Extron VSC is probably the best way to get 16:9 consoles displaying with a correct aspect ratio on a 4:3 CRT?

Thanks!
