Sony stops production of the original PlayStation, even PS-2

Post by ST Dragon »

Honestly I didn't even know the PS-1 was still in production!
I haven’t seen one at a shop for almost 3 years.

Isn't the NEOGEO AES, the longest life span for a gaming console, from 1990 to 2004 by the way?

Apparently the ATARI 2600 has been around for a long time too:
While the PlayStation's decade-plus production run is certainly impressive, it isn't the longest life span for a gaming console. Atari released its Video Computer System (more popularly known as the Atari 2600) in 1977 and didn't officially pull the plug on it until 1991
What about the Japanese PC-Engine, wasn't it for production until around 1997?

The only new Playstation games I see at local shops these days are for the latest Madden game or what not. It's going to be funny when PS3 is out and they will still be making Playstation 1 games even though it's two generations behind  .

PCE, including CD formats, lasted from 1987-1998. Of course there are us indie game developers that still keep the PCE going strong :) ! I believe Genesis might've had a longer run though since I own a ridiculous copy of John Madden '98, which I kind of wish I didn't have :D . Also, Famicom Detectives Club 2 for Super Famicom was released in like 2001 in Japan, so who knows how long these consoles can last  .

I think PS1 software will have the biggest time span eventually. Almost 12 years and still going strong! There is no need for PS1 hardware any longer with backwards compatibility. PS2's are quite affordable for most people these days.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Two of my favourite PSone games don't work on the PS2. How annoying is that.

If the PS3 can play the PSone games the PS2 can't and all regions and the Revolution can play the old 2D titles in low res then that would be one awesome setup.

Oh, shoot. I better go buy a new slim with the extended warranty.

Way to force developers into the PS3. Too bad. It seems to me that this way, PS2's last generation titles won't be as impressive as it was with previous consoles, because now no one is going to be interested into squeezing more power out of the system. (Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Burning Rangers are good examples of last-gen titles)
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Well yeah, but supposedly production of the console itself stopped in '99 or so.

Where on earth do you find a new slim? I haven't seen one in stores for ages.
