New Yume Nikki Game!

I seem to remember there being Yume Nikki fans on here, so I think you'll appreciate that I just found out that there'll be a new Yume Nikki game coming out this month!

The website doesn't show off very much, but seeing as it's being supervised by the original dev himself, I'm sure it'll turn out great.

Before the leaks I was hoping they'd release it physically on 3DS or maybe Switch. This just blows. A side-scroller with no verticality - how's that going to have room for any exploration? Apparently we're literally getting "hold right to win"

I like how the subtitle is "Dream Diary", which makes the literal title of the game "Dream Diary Dream Diary". I have mixed feelings about the original Yume Nikki, but mostly enjoyed my time with it. This game seems questionable, but I'll wait until it's actually released to really pass judgement. Just from what we've seen though, I'd rather try out Yume 2kki or .Flow for free instead (or even play through OFF again...). I think Yume Nikki is ripe to be remade/re-imagined or w/e, since it always felt like it could have used a lot more polish, but so far it seems to be a bit less imaginative. A small piece of the charm of Yume Nikki was it being this unassuming and simple game created by one person that ended up feeling like more than the sum of its parts, so I'm concerned that this $20 collaboration game will be either a close yet watered down remake of the original or just another basic horror game that kind of misses the point of what made these "slow exploration games" intriguing in the first place.

Some of the leaked screenshots look like there is another axis to work with, possibly an isometric viewpoint. It's difficult to be sure until we can see those scenes in motion though.

I assumed it was just a prologue that made it mandatory that the player saw the tomato soup on the sidewalk, and the majority of the walking simulator would have two axises. Like all walking sims before it.

I'm a skeptical cat as well (APB only showing videos of the character creator, Spore and No Man's Sky not displaying any game elements, the endless lolgasm of the various kickblaster scams), but let's let them release a clip of the actual game first.

Go with .Flow tbh. Yume 2kki has been in a constant state of development, so they never know when to stop. Personally, I enjoy .Flow's theme a lot more.

So it's out now, and the website has been expanded to include a screenshots, and a trailer with actual ingame footage. It looks pretty neat.

Haha, well, to be fair, from the gameplay videos and trailers, it does seem to have none of the charm and appeal of the original game.
Yume Nikki was about the exploration of a strange world with very little actual objectives and drew its strength from the eerie atmosphere and the endless potential for interpretations and theories. This "remake" is much more linear, has jumping mechanics and puzzles, and the visual atmosphere is centered on cheap tryhard horror instead of the unsettling yet unobstrusive weirdness that permeates the original.

Yume Nikki was a special game, this looks like some kind of hastily-made indie "horror" game.

Yeah, I kinda agree. I just couldn't resist poking fun is all.

There were a couple Yume Nikki metroidvania styled fangames (also free) made awhile back that were more quality imo. I can't remember their names, but one of them is listed on the official wiki.

I really wish games like .Flow had fangames like that.

I had only an hour to play this so far. It's okay, not worthy to be a reboot of course. It's like another fan game (and that much was known before release). 20 bucks is really asking a bit much for what little content there appears to be
