? about Free Sync and consoles

Post by evil_ash_xero »

I'm looking at a few monitors, and I'm a little confused about some aspects.

I have seen some with GSYNC, and from what I've read, only works with computers with NVIDIA cards.
I'm looking at some with FreeSync, and was wondering if they would work with consoles hooked up via HDMI? Like PS4 Pro or whatever.

Also, should the Hz matter much to me? I know it's more important if you're using a gaming PC (which I'm using that too), but will there be any clash when using normal consoles? Like say, if it's 144Hz?

Another question would be does it matter what the native display is? Like say I am hooking a 360 up to a monitor that is 2560x1440. It would have to upscale the image, correct? Would that add much input lag?

AFAIK no console on the market supports either FreeSync or GSync or refresh rates >60Hz (except for using 2x60Hz for 3D TV or for VR headsets etc.). I think the next console generation will likely have support now that adaptive refresh rates and such have been rolled into the HDMI standard, but for now all of this is strictly a PC-only affair. 144Hz displays do 60Hz just fine. The internal scaler of an LCD display can indeed add significant input lag, I'd check reviews and make sure to get a gaming type display that expects to be driven at non-native resolutions. If you think about it, outside of gaming people always use PC LCDs at their native resolution, so there's little sense in manufacturers investing lots of resources in making sure the scaling is high quality & fast.

Xbox One X is annonced to be compatible with freesync and HDMI 2.1 adaptive sync.
But you'll have to wait that TV sets with HDMI adaptive sync come out, or right now a monitor that supports freesync over hdmi (so you have to be careful of the monitors specs you're interested in)

Holy crap you're right, looks like they have some forward compatible hardware in the One X and can add some of those features with firmware updates. With HDMI 2.1 certification only starting this year I was sure they'd have missed the boat on that one. Didn't follow CES too closely this year, but I guess we'll have to wait till 2019 for actual TVs to show up with HDMI 2.1 and VRR/
