JVC DT-V1910CG
Got one of these a few months ago but I never understood the part in the manuals/brochures saying that it has a different number of TV lines on different resolutions. Isn't that supposed to be static across different resolutions? It says Horizontal Resolution: Video (Y/C): 600 TV lines;1080/60i:900 TV lines. Is the TV really 900 lines? I heard someone talk about the widescreen bezel being the reason but as far as I understood, the amount of lines is lower on widescreen (ex. PVM 20L5 being 800 normally and 600 on 16:9). Can someone please shed some light on this cus I'm pretty confused..

You will loose TVL if you choose to use the screen on 720p resolution for example, this is a screen that is 4:3 and it will be the sharpest when you play games in 4:3 resolutions, like 240p, 480i/480p.tr1f0rc3 wrote:Got one of these a few months ago but I never understood the part in the manuals/brochures saying that it has a different number of TV lines on different resolutions. I can't speak for the JVC, but on some Sony's it's measured that way because "TVL is defined as the maximum number of alternating light and dark vertical lines that can be resolved per picture height". So on a 20L5, a 4:3 set, when you change it to 16:9 ratio the height of the image changes, which changes the TVL number as defined by that forumula. On the widescreen 16:9 Sony BVM's like the D24 and D32, you'll notice (if my memory serves), the TVL doesn't change between 4:3 and 16:9 because the height of the image on the screen in both modes is the same height.

IIRC "TV Lines" refers to the number of distinct alternating vertical lines that can be conveyed in a a square region that is the width and height of the display's effective height. So, it can be expected that this will change based on aspect ratio and dimensions.
It also doesn't handle the non-linearity of phosphor spacing towards the edges of the display on less curved CRT displays, which is the cause of the moire patterns on some tubes (especially the semi-flat Naomi tubes and the Wei-ya monitors found in the Atomiswave SD).

Bottom line is what's the actual number of TV lines this has on 4:3 aspect ratio? Is it really variable?

It has 900 TVL. This is not a dynamic number, but as others have stated, a 16:9 aspect ratio will affect how you calculate tv lines.

Incase you're still wondering about this. It's just a case of JVC being too punctilious. A signal carried over video/s-video won't have enough horizontal resolution to represent 900TVL.tr1f0rc3 wrote: It says Horizontal Resolution: Video (Y/C): 600 TV lines;1080/60i:900 TV lines

Also, it is worth noting that the correlation between high TVL count and sharpness / "thickness" of scanlines is coincidental. Those factors are influenced by tube quality, beam focus, convergence, etc. A very good 450 TVL tube can have razor sharp scanlines and a worn BVM with 900TVL can be fuzzier.
