just for future reference: you probably got the wrong battery anyway. The correct CPS2 replacement battery has wires attached when you buy it already. Soldering to a battery directly is not a good idea, as it can explode if it gets too hot, and the large metal contact sucks up all the heat before getting hot enough to solder to.Yes, I need to know the cost as well. Last night a buddy of mine tried to solder the battery, the solder points fastened to the board itself fine but just would not stick to the sides of the battery, as a last resort we used fiber tape to hold it down (sad I know, but I had another battery on order so figured it would do for a week in the mean time) Anyways, the board was still working fine long after I got home but was dead by this morning. So looks like I will be sending it to Razoola for a phoenix as well. That's what I get for being an arcade enthusiast I guess. Also, can you just send the entire board to him as well? I do NOT want to attach the roms myself, static electricity ect.

Anyways, I am just glad the board is not fried, at least it can be revived. I'm not too stressed. Will have to shoot Razoola an e-mail tomorrow.
Please let us know how it goes.Brian wrote:I got the phoenixed roms and plan on burning them early next week. Doesn't seem too bad after getting a lecture from Raz on how to do it. Of course, that said, I'll probably fry the whole damned thing straight away and wind up buying a new one.

The Phoenix fix allows you to select the region.Neon wrote:I'd have him replace it with Japanese roms, the voices are removed in the NA release. Extremely minor gripe but the end of stage thing is timed around them talking. It's an atmosphere thing
Now speaking of such, if anyone has a Grey ASIA Progear if they could send it to Raz to be phoenixed he would be most pleased. You will get an option of getting the Phoenix job done for free. I've been trying to track down a grey ASIA version for ages but all I get are the bootlegs.

Shipping back and forth to Finland is obviously at your expense. I believe he takes 30EUR for reprogramming the EPROM's.GaijinPunch wrote:Nobody? Price?

When I did it I just paid for it one way and he paid for the postage back to me, out of the £30 Euros I paid for the roms to get phoenixed. I live in the UK so the whole process only took 8 days.
I sent the roms wrapped up with an elastic band on a little piece of polystyrene packing, like what you get when you buy a new TV, Monitor etc.

I've got an original Asia Grey board, was Mode 7's, then Click's, now mine. I already replaced the battery with a full size lithum so its good for about 5-8 years. If it ever dies I'll send it in.rtw wrote:The Phoenix fix allows you to select the region.Neon wrote:I'd have him replace it with Japanese roms, the voices are removed in the NA release. Polystyrene is not antistatic in fact it is very static, you should try to find proper chip handling material. Sorry no idea where you could pick that up in the UK. Maybe Bloodflowers knows...Ord wrote:When I did it I just paid for it one way and he paid for the postage back to me, out of the £30 Euros I paid for the roms to get phoenixed. SEND HIM THE FULL BOARD. he will phoenix it for free.
this is a wanted romset. no one has it yet.
he will actually be UNABLE to phoenix it if you send him the dead one as he does not have the XOR table for that romset.
This requires running a trojan program on the arcade hardware to dump the unencrypted rom contents.
ONce tha is done he can the redo it and release the xors to the usual sources for MAMEing.
And yes, even though the region can be "selected" the different region roms often ARE different.

This is an undumped game. If it dies without getting preserved, goblins might rape your family.
Shit, I'll pay the shipping too (serious).

Yes, I did swap them out and it worked fine. At first, I was nervous because I did not disharge the battery and so the board did not work at all. Then, after re-reading his instructions, I took out the battery and let the board sit for 3 hours and it works fine.
The process is really quite simple. Simply erase, burn, put it in and voila, you're board is working again. A very simple process and a fantastic thing to do to end any worries.

OK, well I just shot him an e-mail asking about pricing. Did you send him your rom chips? I guess I am confused about the whole "erase/burn" thing you mention, I thought he did the erasing and burning of the new data himself. Also, what is the best method of removing/replacing the rom chips without bending any pins or static?

Well technically I believe the phoenix version roms are illegal anyway. I've long believed Razoola should just make them available, they're only useful to people with a genuine board, the games already run under emus /anyway/. Of course, if I'm out of date now and they have been freely handed out, that's great.zaphod wrote:well the other person that gave them to you was a bad monkey, then. lol
But at least they were used for their intended purpose, which makes it okay.
Of course, there's the 'other' issue. While Razoola generated xor tables and sorted out the phoenix roms, which is great, he has no space to complain if they get distributed. Why? Many of the boards -DONATED- to the cps2shock project were then sold. Where do you think the money went? I actually bought one of them post-dumping, for 200ukp if I remember rightly. I'd say he's been rewarded enough.

Razoola doesn't want the roms ANYWHERE but on his computer or in boards with dead batteries. he doesn't want to be responsible for cps2 bootlegs, you see. SOmeone who would give you roms to fix your board that's not Razoola might give bootleggers roms to make bootlegs with you see.
that's why the big secrecy involving the roms.
As long as they are useed for their intended purpose, it is fair use. if everyone used them for their intended purpose (saving the board of a collector) this would cause capcom and the developers no harm whatsoever, because capcom neither sellb oards to collectors nor fixes them up for us. I would say it passes the purpose of use and deals no finnancial harm tests. and two tests passed is enough. THe peoelp usign them to make booltlegs, are breaking the law though.
The phoenix edition roms should honestly be reprogrammed for free play only. that would cement their legal status. arcade operators can still get their boards fixed by capcom.
