Shmups on Xbox 360 w/ generated scanlines!

Post by Logan Jones »

I'm a huge fan of playing Xbox 360 shmups. I've heard from forums online that people have been able to get a Mini SLG (scanline generator) hooked up to their Xbox 360s via its VGA output. What people will do is play a Cave or Raizing shmup on their 360, (for instance, Espgaluda II); hook up the system via a VGA cable, (since the mini SLG is VGA only); then attach the Mini SLG to the cable end, and then to a VGA monitor. Since most of these shmups were originally 320x240, people would turn on the Mini SLG so that the generated scanlines would line up with the pixel rows. If the shmups were originally in TATE for instance, the Mini SLG would line up the scanlines vertically as well, which is awesome. For a more authentic experience, people would get CRT computer monitors for that arcade-like feel. It's a sight to behold! The Mini SLG only works in two resolutions: 640×480 & 1024×768. These resolutions are 4:3 resolutions that might be stretched on a 5:4 monitor. Strangely, 640×480 mode has thick scanlines, while 1024×768 mode has thin scanlines. I'll have to keep that in mind.

This device can also work with other non-shmup games, like D&D collection, and Megaman 9 and 10. If the Xbox is set up for being in 4:3 (or 5:4) running in the corresponding resolutions, it can look incredible!

Note: I DON'T OWN A MINI SLG, and I wanted to see you guys' experiences with this device, so that I can get the most fun out of it!

Post some pictures, too!

Awesome! Thanks! However, what about other games, like D&D, and Megaman? I've never seen them with scanlines.

If you mean Mega Man 9/10, scanlines probably won't help much with that awful blur filter on the 360 versions.

Which version doesn't have the blur filter? Just wondering.

For the original release I believe it was just the Wii versions.
Now they're blur free on Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 as well, but Capcom messed up the scaling on them (correctable by playing windowed on PC). I'd still say it looks better than the 360/PS3 versions though.

By the way, does any version of Megaman 9 have input lag? I seem to feel some lag on the Xbox 360 demo...
