Problems switching non-RGB Video on Extron Cross... [Solved]

Post by nmalinoski »

I picked up an Extron Crosspoint Ultra 88 HVA after verifying in the specs that it does indeed support switching composite, S-Video, and Component, but I can't seem to get any output. The manuals all say it will switch Composite, S-Video, and Component, but they seem to omit any kind of wiring or configuration instructions for these formats.

Currently, I'm testing with a PS2 over component.

The PS2 is correctly set to YPbPr (not RGB), and I'm using a known-good third-party component cable. The cable is connected to the Extron with RCA to BNC adapters, and I matched R to R, G to G, and B to B.

From Output 1 of the Extron, I'm using more RCA to BNC adapters, and a 3xRCA to HD15 cable, which is hooked into AV3 (Set to YPbPr) of my OSSC.

On the Extron I linked Outputs 1 and 2 with Input 1.

With everything connected and powered on, I get no sync on my OSSC. If I unhook Y (the green plugs) from both ends and connect them with a female to female RCA coupler, the OSSC gets sync. I had previously tried testing composite with a PlayStation for input and an RGB decoder into my OSSC on the output end, and that also works when I bypass the Crosspoint.

Am I doing something wrong, or is this unit defective? (Side note: I unfortunately don't have the requisite cables to test RGBS or RGBHV, nor audio.)

I would start by resetting your Crosspoint. The manual is available on the Extron site, and please be aware there's something like 3+ different levels of resetting the unit. You want the deepest setting reset where you don't have to re-install the firmware or anything drastic like that (just clear ALL settings and get it back to the factory configuration). Also try a couple different inputs/outputs just in case one (or more) are fried for some reason.

Anyway, I've had no problem switching YPbPr through my Extron Crosspoint 128 or my Crosspoint 1616 model - do it with my original Xbox all the time (and with my RGBS to YPbPr converter box I use), and I've ran that signal through the Crosspoint to my OSSC or XRGB plenty of times. I'm like 85% sure I tried component on my PS2 as well but it's been a while since I ran that with component (usually run RGBS over SCART on that).

Thank you, but, unfortunately, I've tried all that; I used the Reset button to do the factory reset without wiping the firmware (it flashed 4 times to confirm), and I've tried CVBS and Y all of the R, G, B, and H lines on Input 1, and a smattering of lines on the other inputs. The DSVP page in the Web UI consistently showed no connected inputs--although perhaps I'm misunderstanding this page.

How did you connect your component devices? Did you only need to hook them up to the R, G, and B inputs, or did you have to finagle something with any of the sync inputs?

I have a feeling your unit is broken or something is up with the PS2 and/or the cables. It should have zero problem switching YPbPr as that's what it was designed to do. I use the standard RGB inputs for them.

Okay, so really stupid fix. I took off the front panel, and apparently the ribbon cable connecting to the BNC board on the back was just completely off (Which is weird, because it has clips to keep the connector in). After hooking that back up, reassembling the unit, and rewiring (and bending the Output 1 R connector back into place), I am getting signal! I should've started with this. Thank you all for your help.
