You should give Until the End of the World a serious try, but make sure to watch the complete Director's cut. It's one of the very finest sci-fi films ever made. Re: Movies you've just watched
My guess is he will probably not dig it. It's definitely not rated amongst his highest, and the running time of the director's cut is no joke. I enjoyed it, but I was on a 13 hour flight, so it worked kinda perfectly for me. I had seen the original some 20 year prior. Given U2 did the title track this probably would fall into the hated slot amongst the Wenders fans here.nissling wrote:You should give Until the End of the World a serious try, but make sure to watch the complete Director's cut. Thank you for the recommendation, though.

phantom thread was enjoyable.
I was hoping it'd be a 10/10 but I'd probably lean more towards 8.5. surprisingly sprinkled with humor but I guess that should have been expected since it's a PTA flick even if the trailer was very dry. daniel day-lewis knocks it out of the park. there was a single plot point which was very bizarre to me, so much so that it killed my mood.
bought tickets for it a month ago, and saw it at the music box in 70mm. everyone that sees the 70mm run at music box receives a nice limited edition program with set pictures, concept art, etc

Spoiler
A emotionally retarded older man has a love affair with a young girl.
Obviously everything goes full retard. (COW-BELL
)
Both barely manage to "escape" with their lives (she with child into the bargain) and eventually reach some form of catharsis, in the peepshow-wank shop where the girl now works,
(she having given up their child to friends).
And people tell me its romantic
All beautifully shot, written, directed and scored of course, which makes it all the worse.
Don't get me wrong. I'm probably one of the least prudish people you are ever likely to meet but eh, this shit is like having steak in your cornflakes.
And before anyone starts with the "but it was a metaphor for . . . . ." Oi! NOOOOOO!

Re: Movies you've just watched
I saw it in 70mm at the Arclight Hollywood. I ended up going by myself at 11:30 PM (ultra depressing sounding in retrospect) because I just could not find a single friend or acquaintance interested after watching the trailer. I loved it, but I also found myself not really recommending it to anyone who refused going because the trailer frankly sums up the experience rather well. It is intense, but generally hyper reserved. 100% pure character study with excellent performances, stunning wardrobe, and just all around masterful filmmaking. I will take the off-the-rails intensity of There Will Be Blood any day, but I also enjoyed this quite a bit. No regrets!GaijinPunch wrote:Did you see it at Music Box? You bet - that's my pic of the programs. Maybe my 4th time being there ever, but I was determined to make it there from Logan Square for a PTA film. Especially since I always seem to miss their 70mm runs of The Master.GaijinPunch wrote: No shit read this as "Phantom Menace".

Supposedly they remodeled? But I didn't notice anything different this time around
@necro: I almost fully agree with that though I felt the trailer made it seem like it would be a bore, and it wasn't that way at all.

I need to do this but it's going to be a hard sell to the woman. I love the place but their chairs are not comfy. To date she has seen at least 5 movies there with me... 2 of them clocking in at well over 2 hours (Fire Walk With Me and Mulholland Drive) and comments about the seats every time.Some-Mist wrote: You bet - that's my pic of the programs. yeah definitely can't deny the seats don't blow. And there isn't direct train transit from the west side so we usually end up driving.
believe it or not, I've been in logan for 2 years now and I haven't been to the logan theatre even though it's within walking distance. I'd imagine the seats aren't that great there either since it seems like a budget venue. still considering going this week to see slapshot at 10:30
but if the music box was there in it's place, I'm sure I'd have been there a lot more.

I've lived in WP/West town for over 2 years now, and not been. Sadly, only been to logan a few times. My GF lives about 2 minutes by car or 15 by foot from Music Box, but we're always at mine. (In fact she's about to move in).yeah definitely can't deny the seats don't blow. And there isn't direct train transit from the west side so we usually end up driving.

So, the obvious question: is the Logan Arcade worth a shit? We have the Emporium here which actually has a decent booze selection, and the games aren't bad, but like all arcades in America, they aren't really kept up unfortunately. All those Astro City cabs in Japan spoiled me.

I like Solaris alright, but that's about it, but even Tarkosvky wasn't too keen on that because it was "too accessible".

I hate Tarkovsky too. He killed a horse for one of his dreary films.
Re: Movies you've just watched
Correct.dan76 wrote:I hate Tarkovsky too. He killed a horse for one of his dreary films.
To be more precise;
(in spoilers, as obviously any sane person will find this upsetting)
Spoiler
"To produce this image, Tarkovsky injured the horse by shooting it in the neck and then pushed it from the stairs, causing the animal to falter and fall down the flight of stairs.
From there, the camera pans off the horse onto some soldiers to the left and then pans back right onto the horse,
and we see the horse struggling to get its footing having fallen over on its back before being stabbed by the spear."
Dont be alarmed, though;
"The animal was then shot in the head afterward off camera."
So as not to be cruel, dontcha know.

Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) - Werner Herzogsoprano1 wrote:How the fuck was that allowed?
Actually any Werner Herzog.
You might be surprised to learn of just how many of ones favourite films are tainted with this.
Recently watched Khartoum (1966) - Robert Ardrey and was wondering why my edition said "uncut".
Sitting down to enjoy this old film I caught a few frames of a horse subjected to the Hollywood "horse trip wire", going down at speed and spasming after catastrophic trauma, in the final moments of death.
Obviously pressed stop. Fuck that.
Even today, if anyone thinks that American Humane's - “No Animals Were Harmed” means anything . . . . well I promise, the Check is in the post and I wont come in your mouth.

The 60's, maaaaaaaaaan. Horses had it pretty rough in movies.soprano1 wrote:How the fuck was that allowed?
Animal murder for film happened way more than you'd think. Most people usually stick it to the Italians for the cannibal films as being the worst, but those are few. I swear I see a chicken or snake die every 1 in 5 films from anything from China during the 70-90's output. Some rough dog and cat treatment, too, but not as frequently. I've seen so many goddamn snakes ripped in half I see them in my dreams (nightmares).
Probably my worst offender is... Gah, the name escapes me no matter how hard I think. Doesn't matter, you probably shouldn't watch it. Some sparse, Russian (I believe) post-apocalyptic movie where these girls shoot this dog cold-blooded twice and the camera really lingers on it as it freaks out. Fuck, why am I talking about this. Sorry. Uhhhhhhhh... Tarkovsky!

I was petty sickened to see Dennis Quaid shill the party line, that it was all lies. Barefaced and on tv no less. Goddammit!BrianC wrote:I heard A Dog's Purpose was notorious for its poor treatment of dogs.
Not the first time I have heard rumblings about "nice guy" Quaid's IRL character, though.
The American Humane Association (who were on-set keeping an "eye on things") got an "independent third-party animal-cruelty expert" to exonerate themselves and the film
while they stiil managed to admit that the Dog in question was maltreated under their watch.
Fucking wretched.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Well they get away with that by saying it was ritually slaughtered by the locals for food. They just happened to film it, kinda. More disturbing is the footage of the tied up pigs being killed in the making of doc.GaijinPunch wrote:What about the bull in Apocalypse Now?
Urgh, can't stick animal cruelty, especially for some dumb fuck movie. Apparently Kubrick shut down production of Full Metal Jacked for the day when he found out a hedgehog had been killed in a bonfire on set.
Back on Tarkovsky. The horse was on it's way to the slaughter house, so I guess he thought he could do what he liked with it. Prick.
