From what I see on the cables I bought from RGC, it's set to Pin 20 (Composite Output) oppose to 16. Would I have to open it up and resolder it or something? I'm honestly not too familiar with this stuff.Fudoh wrote:You might need to supply a switching voltage to pin 16 of the scart header to enable RGB detection on the upscaling box. You can check your HAS RGB cable to see if that's provided here. On your breakout cable it currently isn't.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
pin 20 is for sync, that's ok, but some scart inputs require a voltage between 1 and 3V on pin 16 to switch from composite to RGB.

What is the best revision of the NES/Famicom from a gaming standpoint?
Original Famicom
NES Front Loader (Classic Toaster)
New Famicom
NES Top Loader
From my understanding, only the Famicom Top Loader has the Multi-Out port that the SNES, N64 and GameCube all share. Does it still have the extra sound channels, or is that just a thing for Famicom games?

It's my understanding that the AV Famicom is the one to get (and subsequently mod with either NESRGB or HiDEF).GeneraLight wrote:What is the best revision of the NES/Famicom from a gaming standpoint?

When you say AV Famicom, do you mean the original red and gold one? The "AV" in "AV Famicom" refers to the AV Multi-out port.GeneraLight wrote:When you say AV Famicom, do you mean the original red and gold one? Thank you, and you too FBX. I'm not a fan of the Famicom branding, so I may swap the casings out with the NES Top Loader casings.nmalinoski wrote:The "AV" in "AV Famicom" refers to the AV Multi-out port.
I've heard that a very select few NES Top Loaders had the Multi-Out port? Be it a small release in late 1993 or sending one to Nintendo for repair and them putting one in?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I'm calibrating the colors on my Sony PVM 20M2MDU and I have two questions:
1. Does this device require 75 ohm BNC terminators on the outputs?
2. It does not have a Blue Only button. Can I simply unplug Red and Green and achieve the same effect, or do those inputs somehow magically contribute?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
1. All PVMs self-terminate if I recall correctly, so no need for 75 ohm BNC terminators on the outputs.SavagePencil wrote:I'm calibrating the colors on my Sony PVM 20M2MDU and I have two questions:

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
RGB works by adding together the primary colors with different intensity so as to get a wide color spectrum.

So I don't think you can just unplug R and G and get away with it. Not even with component, since green is derived by difference from the other channels and you can't take it off.

Well, you definitely can't with component, because when you unplug 'green', you're removing both luma and sync, so you wouldn't get any image on the screen to begin with.Xer Xian wrote:RGB works by adding together the primary colors with different intensity so as to get a wide color spectrum.

With RGBS, though, if you leave Sync and Blue connected, you should get an all-blue image, yeah? I imagine it wouldn't have the same intensity as with red and green, but the image data should all be there.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I think that the Sync signal only carries the timings for the horizontal and vertical synchronization to get a proper raster, there should be no actual video information in it.

I was speaking a bit rhetorically (i.e., “Blue Only” is just using the Blue gun, without any Red/Green interference), but the site you linked gives clear instructions for calibration.orange808 wrote:https://www.videouniversity.com/article ... to-use-em/SavagePencil wrote:What, exactly, is the Blue Only button doing?

I agree 100%. I'd very much like to get my hands on one. I'd probably go NESRGB because I'm a sucker for analog video.FBX wrote:

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
does anybody else ever get eyestrain/headache from 30fps/sub-30fps motion in video games? I was just trying to play through Final Fantasy XIII on the PlayStation 3, but the movement seems to be (a semi jittery) 30-FPS (sometimes dips maybe into the 20s) and it just hurts my eyes and makes me feel a little nauseous (especially when panning around the camera 360°). I've also had problem with a few PSX and N64 games with really low frame rates, (like Beetle Adventure Racing and Perfect Dark)
side question, I've heard there's a 60 FPS patch for the PC version, has anybody tried, and if so does it work fairly well? ( I've heard the PC ports of the FF13 series were a bit of a mess)

Smooth 30fps looks fine to me, but when it drops below that or is super jittery then it'll hurt my eyes, yeah. I think it's compounded by console games' lower FOV compared to PC titles.Blair wrote:does anybody else ever get eyestrain/headache from 30fps/sub-30fps motion in video games? PC 60fps patch is done by the same guy who made DSFix and should work well. I opted to get the first two FFXIII games on PS3 though, since the PC ports had a number of issues- apparently Lightning Returns had a decent port though, if you care to play the whole trilogy.

Can the original "High Definition" Genesis model have the VA3 or VA4 motherboard? I'm looking for some to buy on eBay and can't find any.

Seems like the non-TMSS versions can be VA3 or VA4 or some others:GeneraLight wrote:Can the original "High Definition" Genesis model have the VA3 or VA4 motherboard? I'm looking for some to buy on eBay and can't find any.

Why though? Is the VA3/VA4 supposed to be better in some regard(s)?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
You're right. The original Model 1 "High Definition" Sega Genesis can have a VA3 or VA4 motherboard revision and no TMSS (Trade Mark Security Software) at the same time. Also, based on my research of serial numbers and FCC IDs, it seems like the TMSS screen was implemented somewhere in 1991.Dochartaigh wrote:Seems like the non-TMSS versions can be VA3 or VA4 or some others:GeneraLight wrote:Can the original "High Definition" Genesis model have the VA3 or VA4 motherboard? And yes, VA3/VA4 has the best stock sound quality.
Apparently the JVC X'Eye has the sharpest RGB image quality of all consoles that can play Mega Drive/Genesis games. Does the JVC X'Eye have TMSS?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
A newbie question: I am considering an RGB mod on my N64. If I proceed with the mod, will S-video capability be affected? Thanks!
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
The N64 will still have all the normal functions, with the addition of RGB.
Which mod are you going to install?

Just planning on installing a basic pre-made RGB amp.Syntax wrote:The N64 will still have all the normal functions, with the addition of RGB.

My follow up question is: can I just wire the red, green and blue (ignoring sync) and be fine with a sync on luma scart cable? Sorry again to the noobish questions, I'm just now beginning the descent down the rabbit hole of RGB gaming after finally taking the plunge on a Framemeister.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Wire csync to the av port and if you need to use it all you have to do is buy a csync cable
You may have image shift using composite video or luma for sync as they dont have the same point of origin.
Some sets require composite video for sync though so its nice to have both options.
Id rather have a csync over a luma and keep a composite one spare if the need arises

Don't forget that the basic RGB amp only works on the first few motherboard revisions. That's why my amp kit is sitting in its baggy still a year later.GojiFan90 wrote:Just planning on installing a basic pre-made RGB amp.Syntax wrote:The N64 will still have all the normal functions, with the addition of RGB.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I never understood why people care about TMSS. It's like 1.5 seconds on boot-up, and it's what like 90% of us original Sega Genesis user saw with the majority being TMSS units. To me if a Genesis doesn't have TMSS it's kinda weird. On the other hand, if it's a marker of a better quality system (which I always heard ALL the Gen 1's had great audio output) then that's cool, but all the screenshot comparisons I've seen seem to be the same difference between like a SNES 1CHIP-02 and 1CHIP-03 (which seems to be wishful thinking at best that one REALLY is better than another....just like most things with these RGB systems and peoples crazy OCD quest for "the best" seem to be).GeneraLight wrote:Does the JVC X'Eye have TMSS?
Yes and no. MANY have to be degaussed when you turn them on their side, and I've had a couple that the built-in degausser didn't always fix it on the first (or ~3rd) degauss....but most seem to be just fine.SavagePencil wrote:Do Sony PVMs have any problems with going into Tate mode?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Thank you. I have a PVM 20M2MDU that can be a bit cantankerous with degaussing, which is why I purchased a degaussing coil. Is the need for degaussing after a rotate something that happens immediately, or only if you leave it rotated for a long period of time?Dochartaigh wrote:Yes and no.
