Daoih & Shienryu similarities

Post by FRO »

Has anyone noticed the similarities between Daoih & Shienryu? I was playing Daoih in MAME yesterday & today and fired up Gekioh: Shooting King (aka Shienryu) on my PSX this morning and it's frightening how similar they are in some ways:

1. The 3 available weapons are the same in each game, though the system in which you use them is different.
2. The Power-up icons are the same.
3. The first level bosses are REALLY similar in terms of attack pattern, not to mention the barrage of power-up containers towards the end of the boss fight.
4. The scenery in the first level is really similar in both games, as well as layout & enemy patterns

It's kind of scary how many things are really similar between these two games...

Daioh's Staff:
* Programmer : Tsutomu Tabata
* Graphic designers : Undead Tama, Kata Chumuri, Numa
* Composer : Sho
* Sound driver : K. Zikil-Hide Ishibashi
* Producer : Noriyuki Takasaki
* Exective producer : Sakae Nakamura

Shienryu's Staff:
* Director and programmer : Tsutomu Tabata
* Game and graphics designer : Nozomu Oda
* Graphic designers : Shige-P, Tama (Magitec)
* Sound tracks and effects : bAsHEE, Yuki
* Planner : Hiroaki Sato
* Advertisement : SHO
* Lead tester : Takeshi Ohbuchi
* Executive producer : Noriyuki Takasaki

Shienryu was ment to be a remake of Daioh, IIRC.

If you get bored, go play around at MAWS to find all sorts of other fun information out.

ie: Daioh translates to "Great King" and Tsutomu Tabata was the lead programmer on Sengeki Striker as well.

For some odd reason, though they have nothing in common except for a word in the title, I think of a certain humorous manga every time Daioh gets mentioned. I also think of a cute 'em up with Chiyo-chan flying. That would rock!

not really on topic, but i think daioh is one of the greatest shmups ever made, and it doesnt nearly get the recognition it deserves.

if i could own a cabinet of choice, daioh would surely be one of my top 3 wishes (mainly because it was never ported)

the ONLY problem you might have with the game is the flickering, but i dont know if its just emulation that causes this, otherwise its perfect!

I posted last year about some cool similarities, like that stuff, after finding a cab at a pizza parlor, back home :D I was truely amazed at how similar they are.

The arcade board flickers, too. I LOVE Daioh and Shienryu. What's the oposite of a manic shmup- a sniping shmup? They are like manic snipers. Sengeki Striker is also very similar in level layout. It's when you near the last levels of all three of them that they really start to be similar, and I love how there's some Truxon references once you get into space.

Sengeki Striker is interesting in that all the bullets are primarily tiny dots of three different colors that go three destinct speeds. It's a wierd game, definitely the worst of the three, but still with some really fantastic moments- and still with that genius play mechanic of 'sent back after a death unless it's in a boss fight' that I think is just wonderfully rewarding.

Also, play Daioh as the Japanese version and the weapons work the same as shienryu.

Rather than start a new topic on this subject, I thought I'd ressurect my old thread instead!

Does anyone know what the heck the "computer voice" is saying during the high score entry screen? I can't make it out...

Also, doesn't it suck when you are having a REALLY good game & you get all the way to the end & then you die? I almost had a 1CC of Gekioh (on defaults) last night, but I ran out of lives. That sucks.

I've been wondering about that too ever since I got this game (btw thanks for donating this, Ghegs!). My theory is that the voice is saying obscenities, ranging from "lazy" to "bastard" and "c*nt". Or maybe I just got such a lousy score that I deserved it and it says cooler things to true SHOOTING KINGS..

You ran out of lives? Damn. That happens to me sometimes too! :lol:

Perhaps also worth noting is that the japanese version of Daioh (set by dipswitch) is even more similar - the english version offers all three weapons and bomb types at the touch of a button (6 buttons in total), while the jap version uses the more traditional shot/bomb button control, and switching the weapons is done by grabbing the corresponding powerup.

Perhaps Warashi is the spiritual successor to Athena, in much the same way Cave is to Toaplan?

I mentioned some points about Daioh PCB a few years back...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

When I first got my Daioh PCB, it was just a barebones board. By trial & error, I manage to find out what the dipswitch settings did for certain functions...a tedious process but once figured out, it's easy as pie. ^_~

I did a throughly-well covered writeup about the Daioh PCB on the Shmups.com forum a few years back. Search for it under "American Sammy's 1994 Daioh PCB Review". ^_~

By simply using a 2-pin header, one can indeed change a American Sammy "Daioh" Jamma PCB into a Japanese Bios PCB on a certain Jumper. Most casual people don't realize that Daioh is the only arcade-based shmup title that has a 6-button layout...no other arcade shmup title has that distinction and that's what makes it a unique piece of arcade shmup history.

Updated: 3/24/06 at 11:17 PST -- More new revelant info regarding the Daioh PCB...

I also did document in my Shmups.com review of Daioh, the differences between the JPN & USA Bios version of Daioh -- it really is a different beast to play the American Sammy Daioh aracde PCB in JPN Bios setting just see how the gameplay and different sprite graphical changes + see the end credits alone! ^_~

pcenginefx: I have been searching for the Daioh review but cannot find it - can you provide a link?

Also, has anyone figured out what the high score entry screen voice is saying? It sounds bizarre...

Don't forget that Daioh's last boss also appears in Shienryu (though he gets owned by the true last boss).
