Nintendo: Revolution will have Genesis\TurboGrafx games
Nintendo: Revolution will have Genesis\TurboGrafx games
Link (Kotaku)
At the Nintendo GDC keynote, it was announced that the Revolution's Virtual Console will in fact play Genesis games, as has been rumored previously. No word on how much of a selection will be available yet, but seeing as how poorly my HDTV handles composite video input, it'll be nice to have a better way to play the stuff on it.
Also announced was a DS Zelda game called Phantom Hourglass (details on that are sketchy though.)
Edit: Don't know how I missed this one, but it seems there will be TurboGrafx games available too! Again, no word on just how many of them will show up (they specifically mentioned Hudson though) but the news on the Revolution just keeps getting better.

I don't think the "Go" and the intersecting + logo is for the Rev. The logo and name "Go" (and the text talking about a system level instead of logo, and no mention of backwards-compatability or the motion sensitive controllers) to me says "marketing strategy" for how Nintendo's products will merge together to form one larger idea. Kind of like Apple's "digital hub" idea from a few years ago. "Nintendo: GO" - games on the go, games/game data shared between devices, games how you want them, etc. But as far as I know, only the Rev and the DS are confirmed to be linkable. Since there are three crosses, perhaps that means a third product is yet to be revealed.
That doesn't allow direct links. The post with the photo is here:

I think the Go thing may refer to their online service, just a hunch. I am psyched about the PCE games (especially if they include CD titles), but licensing may be a problem since many of the developers from back then are no longer around.

I still find it hard to understand when people get excited about playing old games on new systems. We have been able to play almost all 8 and 16-bit titles on PC emulation for almost a decade now, and with perfect graphics as well. I have every single Genesis game ever made on my harddrive... right now. Sure, it's illegal, but so are many other things (including importing games--it says FOR JAPAN ONLY on the box).
Hey don't let me deflate your enthusiasm, it's not like we have any other reason to get excited about the Rev, since they haven't shown any games yet. I just had to say this.

Definitely. If only they'd release them on PC as well for use on our emulator of choice, rather than fake high res + likely lack of features on the Rev. That and the fact that the niche games I enjoy probably won't be offered are the reasons I'm not excited about this. Neither really Nintendo's fault and if I wind up with a Revolution I'll probably buy a few of these anyway. The fact that it's legal and because we tend to be law-abiding citizens is what makes the emulation appealing.
Hey, games companies: Seeing as there's a demand, instead of rereleasing the same titles ad nauseum, how about a quality NEW 2d game?

Maybe they'll compress the CD audio tracks into mp3 files or something? You wouldn't be able to store too many games, but most older CDROM titles should easily fit that way.

If it plays CDroms there's little chance it wouldn't play super CDroms. That would be insane.
I would imagine you play the CD games by actually having the CDs.

All these old games on the revolution. If they don't have the right res and scanlines that would be insane.
But still, when are we supposed to see some shots of the rev' working?

DC minimum res: 320x240 (or thereabouts)Kingbuzzo wrote:why not? The GC can't, after all.
GC min res: like 640x480. Check lamefaqs for exact numbers.
the Gamecube wasn´t built to emulate old games - Revolution is. Why shouldn´t Nintendo be able to customize their output chip in a way it CAN output lo-res? It´s not like emulating on PC or modded consoles where you take hardware that was designed for other purposes, the hardware is designed with emulation in mind.I hope you realize there is absolutely no way in hell the Rev would be capable of outputting at the correct resolution for these games.

It's a shame more people don't kick up a fuss about the low res and the scanlines. It's a joke.
Look at the fuss about GameCube RGB then they put it into the PAL GC. That was because of fan pressure. I don't know how complicated it is to alter it last minute to make it output different resolutions.
All those NES games in low res RGB. Awesome. As far as I know the only way to play NES like that is a few games on the Playchoice and possibly on PC emulator with the right graphics card etc.

Low res should be included, but leave fake scanlines out of this. If you want visible scanlines then play the games on a monitor that has them, but to me it's like expecting vinyl hiss and pops to be artifically inserted into a CD. It's a hardware flaw (in the monitor, not the original NES, Turbo or Genesis) that has nothing to do with the original content (unlike resolution, which was a part of the original content and should thus be preserved). Forcing them would require filtering the graphics, and I thought that was something people here were against.
Eh? If the graphics are output at the original resolution on a regular CRT TV, scanlines will be present, no fakeness required.

Exactly. But some people will hook it up to their computer monitor or HDTV and then proceed to bitch about the lack of scanlines anyway and how stupid Nintendo is for not including them.it290 wrote:Eh? Genny and TG-16 games on a Nintendo console, so cool yet also so strange. I don't think I'll download hardly any as I already own pretty much all the choice ones I will ever want. If they went out of their way to provide something cool like say, add online multiplayer to Bomberman '93 or '94 (assuming they bother to localize any PCE titles) then that would be incredible. But we know that won't happen.
I would love it if I could play games like Bomberman or Streets of Rage with online multiplayer. I doubt it'll happen too, but that would be a major selling point for me (seeing as I too own most of the games I'd be interested in already).

Given the fact that it's so damn easy to copy a PCE CD, or even quote the relative scarcity of them, I feel they will not allow it to work. Which is a damn shame.99pence wrote:If it plays CDroms there's little chance it wouldn't play super CDroms. That would be insane.
