Anybody know where to get SDI mod from?

Post by citrus3000psi »

I'm looking for that BT656PRO that PMS released back in 04. I want to SDI mod a samsung nuon player. The decoder outputs ITU-R BT.656 so it should be possible. Anybody have any leads on where to get one or how to build something similar?

https://www.digitalconnection.com/produ ... dikitp.asp Call them at: 1-800-217-2013 See if they can hook you up with one. (probably not as it's pretty old, but it can't hurt to try)

I would post in the classifieds on the AVS board and just get a pre-modded player, from which you rip the mod kit.

I could only find the digital connection link lawyer shared. It's looks really outdated

Can you hook that up to hdmi or just coax sets? Intriguing

I did make a post and looks like someone might have one for me. In the mean time I ended up designing something that should work. Its based on the CLC021, which is what PMS is using.

I'll get some made up and give it a whirl. If I don't find any issues with the board I will release the files. The CLC021 is pricey as the cheapest place to get it is directly from TI for 38 bucks.

nice piece of retro hardware.

Back in the days not all players were modable. I'm not sure what made a player modable back then. Maybe exposed access to the digital decoder output ?

I'm not expert in this field, only know from what material I've read. But this is the gist:

The MPEG Decoder must output ITU-R BT.656 or ITR-U BT.601 data streams. The BT.656 is by far easier to wire then the BT.601 to the CLC021. As the ladder is missing EAV/SAV timing signals in the digital lines and must be decoded from the H/V sync lines.
Since of lot of these MPEG encoders are undocumented its best to look at the DAC it connects to. Now I was able to find a N501 service manual that made things really easy for me. The DAC is a SAA7128 and appears to be accepting only the BT.656 data stream. The service manual also has PCB plots, so these are the data points I need:

Just to follow up on this, I was able to complete the project. I did have to wrap the clock source with a ground wire.

Board and info here: https://oshpark.com/shared_projects/YO08zbht

And some pics (camera must have had some crap on the lens, sorry):

SDI output into a CII is probably the best you can do for watching DVDs on modern displays. Congrats :)

And do you notice any improvement compared to the component output (which I can spot on the back of the machine above - if that's the Nuon player) ?

Haven't compared yet, but I doubt I'd notice much improvement. But I will check it out when I get time.

Different note, maybe you might now. I couldn't get digital audio input to work and output via HDMI. Analog input worked fine, but both toslink and coxial, was total silence. Didn't know if there was any secret CII settings.

I think this was an output issue, not a an input issue. Toogling the output between DVI and HDMI could help (output port config) - at least I remember that it solved my PS2 audio issues. HDMI audio implementation was always buggy at best. Using coax or spdif out instead was usually the way to go.

Yeah that is what I'm finding.

PS3 HDMI + optical only audio (set in ps3 menu), works fine
SDI + Optical, no sound
SDI + Analog Audio, works fine

I may look into finding an hdmi audio injector, to keep on hand with my CII.

This is the problem I was having with my Onkyo receiver and my OSSC; when in HDMI mode, the OSSC always includes audio data, and my receiver won't fall back on optical if it receives audio via HDMI. Switching TX Mode to DVI on the OSSC disables audio, which lets my receiver fall back on optical.
