fixed :D

I just watched some more versions of A Christmas Carol (Scrooge 1970, Muppet Christmas Carol, and Disney's A Christmas Carol.

Scrooge (1970 musical version) isn't as good as the Alistar Sim or George C. Scott versions, but it's one of the more fun versions. Albert Finney is an excellent Scrooge, but Kenneth More was one of the most fun versions of a Ghost of Christmas Past and Alec Guinness nailed Jacob Marley.

Muppet Christmas Carol is a good as I remembered with some fun songs and Muppets. The version I bought on Amazon (which is thankfully part of Movies Anywhere), does not have When Love is Gone included in the movie, but at least includes it as a special feature when viewed on Vudu or Movies Anywhere. The odd thing is that When Love is Gone is in widescreen and HDX, so it's perplexing that it can't be viewed as part of the movie.

Disney's Christmas Carol is actually one of the better versions I have seen. It gets flack becuase it's a surprisingly scary adaption and is not Disneyified, despite having Jim Carrey in it (who isn't OOT and does a nice job here).

Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.

An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.

Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

I watched Justice League a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty decent, what ever some people may say. Sure, it's far from perfect but it's certainly watchable. The weakest link is the unimpressive villain imo.

Gremlins

Delicious Christmas fun.

I know I post this annually, but I would love a dark remake with the original script.

Part of the IFC Midnight series, the 2016 "The Autopsy of Jane Doe" starts off nice and slow to lure the audience in. With some subtle clues that this ain't your average run-of-the-mill autopsy, things start to go south for our two coroners in charge of handling this rather peculiar case at hand. Is certainly recommended viewing in the suspense/drama/horror genre. Actress Olwen Catherine Kelly plays the mysterious autopsy victim. Very well done movie given it's initial 86 minutes overall running time with the pacing and skillful directing. Try watching it alone with the lights turned off for a really good time, you'll be in for a treat with this one.

Not watched much lately.

Childs play (original)

First time I watched this since the days of VHS. Its still pretty good. The doll and the boy have a believable chemistry between them and it all pans out rather well. I'd give it a 7/10.

Let the right one in (Swedish version)

A blu ray steelbook for this came out with some great artwork. Image

Thought i'd blind buy it. I've already seen the USA version and I don't know which one I prefer. I thought they were much of a likeness. I thought the USA version did a great move with the old photograph scene which isn't fleshed out in this version. In fact its not in it at all which was surprising. I'd give this one 8/10 and i'd give the USA version 8.1/10. I'm probably going against the grain there though as many prefer the Swedish version. Some of the scenes are copied right across from one version to the other.

I really liked the original swedish "Lady with the dragon tattoo" series. I'm starting to get curious about other Swedish movies. If you know of any Swedish movies that are decent but haven't got the "Lets make it in English and copy it frame for frame" treatment then please let me know.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

If you can get the Vengeance Edition of this one, you're in for something cool: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072285/ (the original cut has some hardcore porn scenes inserted that are really disturbing). The Swedish/Danish series Bron (The Bridge) is very good and the American version is good too.

"The Disaster Artist"

Fantastic, *especially* if you're entertained by the original movie, "The Room". Saw TDA with my cousin, who had no knowledge of the original source content, and he found it funny, too. I hadn't laughed that much in a movie theater since I saw "Due Date".

Franco does a terrific job. Actually, both Francos do, but James gets the greater nod for his (what appears to be) spot-on Tommy Wiseau impression.

Wow, that original language audio track sucks big time. Only because the score is so uneven in what it wants to do. Still a decent movie, but goodness sakes, that hybrid audio track is the only one to go with. That nightclub scene is awful though still. Another good release from Hong Kong Rescue.

Just to follow up, apparently, Tommy is actually campaigning to be in the next Star Wars movie in some way. While exploring that avenue, I came across this, which amused me:

It's a Wonderful Life. In color. Classic. Color job is well done, but I still plan to mostly watch in b/w. Interesting how Lionel Barrymore as Mr. Potter is the complete opposite of Martin Vanderhof, his character in You Can't Take It With You (another Frank Capra movie with both Lionel Barrymore and James Stewart).

Pinocchio (1940)
Never saw this in the original dub (For many years Portugal used the Brazilian dub, or used subtitles), and it's been more than 20 years since I saw it in a shitty VHS.
Not much to say, it's a wonderfully made animated Disney movie, from a time long gone, and fun to watch as an adult due to the various suggestive scenes (dat cigar lol).

Wonderful movie. The colour is absolutely magnificent, I could never go back to the black and white I don't think.

I'm in that group of people who think Capra films are actually really fucking dark.

Because the one thing preventing the well-intentioned regular joe from being squashed by the system in all his films is Deus Ex Machina. Literally in the case of "It's a Wonderful Life."

Also I can't get over the horror of all the Jazz music and people dancing the Jitterbug in Pottersville

Got around to seeing Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. I liked it better than the 1995 original and Zathura, while the 1995 was pretty dark and serious, this one felt more like an action-comedy. Oh, and it's set during Christmas.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
The so-called "last Disney movie with balls" is a beautiful show of colours and great animation, but what really takes the cake is the portrayal of Judge Frollo and his inner demons, and the amazing performance by the late Tony Jay.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi"

Liked it quite well. Entertaining on a number of fronts, with only slight bloating due to a not-necessary side story to allow one of the main characters to have something to do in the movie. Even with that slight bloat, though, I *really* don't understand the backlash the movie seems to be getting.

great movie with gritty violence. I saw the uncut version years ago, and while not necessary, it solidifies the horrific shit she goes through.

The Babysitter - 'renowned' directory McG's latest contribution. described by a friend as 'campy..... a lampoon of traditional horror flicks'. it lacked either of the aforementioned qualities; absolutely terrible.

Gerald's Game - 'While trying to spice up their marriage in their remote lake house, Jessie must fight to survive when her husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame.'
this was a nice surprise. the instant her husband dies and she's fully conscious of her predicament, weirdness ensues. not great or terrible, but entertaining.

I, Claudius - Due to it's duration, i'll put this here instead of the TV thread. 12-part miniseries from the 70's ( I really wish miniseries would make a comeback.) about the earlier period of the Roman Empire. Highly recommended if you enjoyed Rome (HBO), and
place a greater emphasis on writing and delivery than extravagant production.

The Greatest Showman: ***1/2

I can see why the critics are being so hard on this (currently sitting around 48% on Rotten Tomatoes), but at the same time I found it quite entertaining, even if it is blatant Oscar bait. It's a musical biopic of P.T. Barnum, loaded with flashy musical numbers, catchy tunes and elaborate choreography that would have a pretty good chance of collapsing under its own weight without Hugh Jackman to prop it up, and he does that and then some (you wouldn't think he can sing as well as he does, but apparently he can.) That said, it has some pretty glaring structural problems that are hard to ignore (the ending in particular feels hand-waved and abrupt) and some of the musical numbers overstay their welcome. In spite of that, it's the first film in quite a while I've went looking for the soundtrack to afterward (fortunately it's on YouTube.)

Sure it's Oscar bait, but I can definitely see it winning a couple.

The Florida Project.
Saw it a week or so ago and not knowing anything about it besides the image from the poster.
I've seen since that the young lead actress is receiving Oscar buzz - rightfully so.
"Shockingly realistic" is a good way to describe the movie. The characters are often annoying, but unflinchingly real. Definitely a prominent side of the USA we keep in the shadows.
Spoiler
There were parts here and there where I got bored but I certainly wanted to stay to the end. A sense of dread or pending disaster built through the movie but I was sure I didn't know what was going to come of it - and I was right about that.
The final scene - the literal final image - for me, was crushing.
