LCD panel that supports 15kHZ suggestions

Hi guys,

I'm working on making my first portable. (not handheld, just portable laptop style). I'd like some suggestions for a screen that supports 15kHz RGB. Bonus if it is easy to purchase because I don't have a ton of free time to scour thrift stores and PC Recycle joints for some very rare specific monitor. Links online would be great. Does not have to be a full retail monitor, a naked panel that I can figure out the RGB connection would be fine. I'm willing to buy a remote board to get RGB in if they are available.

Absolute must haves:
1) 15 kHz RGB
2) 4:3
3) At least decent picture quality
4) Size range between 9"-15", my ideal size would be around 12" diagonal.

Would be nice to haves:
1) LED backlight instead of CFL
2) Nice picture quality (I know no LCD is going to equal a CRT of course)
3) Low current draw (we can all dream)

Do you guys know any suggestions? I love the PSone screen but I want something bigger. Thanks!

There are some 4:3 lcd monitors that support 240p quite well apparently. NEC Accusync 71V for a start (I have no on-hand experience with it tough, just seen very favorable reviews on these monitor's handling of 15kHz, so I can't give you a personal analysis). That one also supports 24kHz. I've seen a couple people on here vouch for the Dell UltraSharp 2001FP, a 1600 x 1200 monitor. Again I have no experience with it.

The AccuSync 71V is quite decent. They are actually 5:4 though.

I have a Dell p2210t and it is pretty great. It accepts 240p over its VGA port. I just use a SyncStrike with all of my consoles on SCART and they all have worked wonderfully.

It doesn’t just accept it though. It actually displays 240p properly. I have tested it with Artemios 240p suite, and it passes all of the tests. I also used the 240p Test Suite to test the display lag of this monitor. I did the proper test against a CRT, not the manual one that means nothing. It has just a bit over a frame of lag, which is not bad at all.

The picture is prett good. It could be better, but I’m quite happy with it. It is a 16:10 aspect ratio with a resolution of 1680x1050 and is 22 inches diagonal. The display has a fantastic menu, with a vast number of controlls. I can force a 4:3 aspect ratio. That feature is super important and it works perfectly. I can also send it YpBpR over the VGA port with a $6 VGA to 3RCA adapter. You have to seitch it to yipper mode in the menu, but that is no big deal and Wii and PS2 look great. It’s also got a rotation feature. The screen can be put into portrit configuration effortlessly, but it rotates th wrong way for tate-mode gaming. That is unfortunate, but it is still great for my computer.

I must say I recommend it. I got mine for free when my brother’s office tossed them. He has three!

This one actually looks perfect for my gaming needs when I'm back in my home country, I'm currently playing on an old CRT which will either die or my parents will throw it out soon. The picture on it has gotten too soft anyway.

Only thing is I can't find a AccuSync 71V, all I keep seeing is AccuSync 73V. Anyone know if 73V works the same for 15Khz signals ?

It does a decent job and it even has composite and S-video inputs, but it interprets 240p sources as 480i and it's very picky with RGB.

Your going have a tough time finding a 240p panel in the size especially if you want an LED backlight.

My suggestion would be to get a nice led panel and wire in a line doubler or scaler.

The cheapest option would be a gbs8100 but I have no idea how to run the custom firmwares to get the superior picture.

This monitor is a 1024 x 768 it would be compatible with a gbs output resolution

BenQ BL912....actually this one is 19" LED but it does a great job when feeded with 15khz. using this one for testing but also for Amiga and X68000

That's a shame, can't seem to find a 71V at all. Maybe it's been added to the "rare" retro craze list and it'll be appearing on eBay for few hundred soon The BenQ BL912 looks decent and available brand new everywhere, but at basically the price of an OSSC there's no point.

That's too bad :/ There are a couple on Amazon.com, ranging from $50 to $80, but they don't ship internationally. Maybe an american shmupper can ship one to you?

EDIT : the ones on Amazon.com are listed as models ASLCD71V, while others are called LCD71V. So I'm not sure if the ones on Amazon.com are the right ones. It seems they are(same text etched on each of the two monitors), but better make your verifications to be sure

Shipping from the US would be quite pricey for something that weighs that much though :/ I imagine the AS in ASLCD71V is for AccuSync so its probably the same thing. I might just get the BenQ one closer to the summer. @svensonson, I've seen the BenQ BL912 is good in terms of picture quality, but what about performance like scrolling smoothness or handling of switching resolutions ala Chrono Trigger ?

I have a Dell 2001FP, you can usually find these at PC recylcers for cheap. If you just need something cheap that'll do 15kHz it'll work, but image quality is super great. These are actually considered gaming monitors at the time so response time is reasonable. The however don't power save and are pretty power hungry for an LCD. Finding a 15kHz LCD monitor that is clear, sharp and does good high resolution content is hard. There was a LCD PVM at my local PC recylcer that they were asking more for than they normally do CRT PVMs and it sold right away.
