M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
Re: M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
I quite appreciate all the new/additional tracks they added for the arrange.

Cool. It's not like this thread is on fire, so I thought it would be cool to bring it up.Keres wrote:I usually use the arranged soundtrack, I like it better than the PC version music, I think. I just didn't feel like making a post specifically about it, sorry
I had some slight issues with the Orchestral Soundtrack at first, but it's my "go to" at this point.
Now here's something I want to ask...anyone surprised at the lack of scanline/filtering options this game has? I mean, these are 35 dollar ports of some pretty old games. I tend to turn on the smoothing filter, and put it on 25 percent scanlines. It looks similar to how I have my emulators set up. SIMILAR.
The smoothing filter is a bit much.
And I was looking at all the options for the Futari port that M2 did, and if they could add a few more, it would go from "well, it looks alright" to "not bad!!".
I just find it really weird...it's a 35 dollar port...done by M2, who are masters of emulation and ports. And we get one smoothing filter. And honestly, not many options with scanlines. Certainly not types of scanlines.
What's your take? I'd write them and ask for more options, but I know how Japanese developers are.
But how hard can it be to add a couple of more filters? Seriously.
These old titles should have a number of options to make them look better on modern TVs. Which you can certainly do. And these are 35 bucks!

Re: M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
Smoothing and mock scanline filters don't make a game look better.
Futari was also a full retail physical title at 7,140 yen. I'd prefer port accuracy that they're known for, or useful things like quick restarts (which Futari lacked during leaderboard runs, but 5pb's Ketsui port got right), or removing counterstops (which they recently did with Mahou Daisakusen, but Futari's counterstops were never patched out) to filters that falsely make you feel like you're getting better value for money because "look at all this volume".

agreed, don't understand how people can play with this stuff turned on, it's like playing wearing someone else's glasses. that's not how CRTs actually lookElixir wrote:Smoothing and mock scanline filters don't make a game look better.

They also don't look like the games, on a CRT, with them turned off. To each his own. I love the image on a CRT and the smoothing filter looks great running on the Vewlix.
More options wouldn't hurt i suppose, yeah.

And just so I'm not missing anything, these ShotTriggers games can't be sorted out to display properly on 4:3, right?

Re: M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
I find myself liking 75% scanlines, NO smoothing. I'm used to playing these kinds of games on a Sony PVM through RGB, which is about as ideal as you can get for home setups, and I'm honestly quite satisfied with the ShotTriggers games visually on my 55" 4K TV. I'm often kinda picky about this kind of thing too - so many modern console releases of older games do a shit job of having decent looking scanlines, or they do something ridiculous like Hamster's ACA Neo Geo and some of their Arcade Archives games where they only let you use scanlines if you're also using their ugly smoothing filter. Or something like the awful "CRT" filters or warped screen effects on stuff like the Iron Galaxy ports of Capcom games...
This ShotTriggers release doesn't match the godly soundtrack precedent set by Battle Garegga (stuffed with all the awesome options) and Dangun Feveron releases (OH MY GOD THAT CHIBI-TECH VIP ARRANGE IS SOOOO GOOOOOOODDDDDD). But it's nice to see they're continuing to give multiple options and new arrangements on each release. Also... this discussion just made me have the epiphany that Ketsui could possibly get a brand new arrange. That factor alone could totally justify this re-release to me despite my owning the high quality 360/PS3 ports.
As for soundtracks, while I often don't really dig orchestral style mixes of my chiptune based games, for this one it seems to fit and the Orchestral Soundtrack is my go-to now as well. I also appreciate the fact that they added the PC version (is this the same as the original Sharp X68000 soundtrack?) and I do prefer that to the arcade - easily my 3rd place choice.evil_ash_xero wrote:How are you guys digging the Orchestral Soundtrack?
I'm really enjoying it. I've always had problems with the way the music in this game sounded. Not so much the compositions, but the execution.

Has M2 hinted if their other games in the shottriggers series, besides Battle Garegga, will come to Xbox?
Re: M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
Lol, I came here to ask the exact same question. I sold my PS4 and bought and XB1 recently so I would love to get Dangun Feveron and this on it.5pectre wrote:Has M2 hinted if their other games in the shottriggers series, besides Battle Garegga, will come to Xbox?

Re: M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
I was surprised that Battle Garegga landed on the Xbox One in the first place. Maybe M2 felt that it was necessary so that they could more accurately gauge interest in the western markets. Given the price of the game and the price expectations of the mainstream western audience I have my doubts that sales were brisk - despite how revered the title may be among those who actually know about it.
The fact that globally the Xbox One install base is only half that of the PS4 doesn't work in favour of further releases (though to be fair the global Xbox One install base seems to be about 15 times the size of the Japanese domestic PS4 install base). Given that at least one Xbox One port already exists, on paper the next port should require somewhat less effort as some elements, the "shell" around the actual game should be reusable (though it is sometimes surprising how little can actually be reused - and I suspect that getting the timing on these ports just right is time consuming and a royal PITA).
Further Xbox One releases probably hinge on whether the other entries will be localized for western markets. But in the end just localizing the base PS4 version has to be cheaper than also investing in an Xbox One port.
Battle Garegga Rev. 2016 released Oct. 06 but there still is no word when Dangun Feveron will appear on western marketplaces. I wouldn't think localization should take that long once they make up their minds to do it. So are they simply avoiding being drowned out during the Christmas shopping frenzy - or are they being held up by something else like an Xbox One port?
So because of the lack of "progress" with the Dangun Feveron I wouldn't be too surprised if there will be an Xbox One port as part of the western release - beyond that I wouldn't hold my breath. If there are no further western releases I'm not expecting any more Xbox One ports. And even if there are further western releases the numbers on the Xbox One marketplace may not be worth M2's time and effort. Just because these games (ports) exist doesn't automatically mean that they are generating a profit for M2.

Re: M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
They're working on XB1 because they like XB1 and like supporting the underdog, and western audiences gave them another excuse to try it (and id@xbox is a relatively hassle-free way to self-publish on consoles). They've worked on Japan-exclusive XB1 titles and ports previously.
I imagine they also have some interest in X1X as it's very friendly to the work they do: it allows for variable refresh rates, it can very easily display in 4K which is necessary for authentic screen filters, etc. If they're able to commit to X1X support it may very well be the best platform for these games.

Re: M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
The English Xbox One Dangun Feveron page has been up for a little while so I'd imagine it's happening: http://m2stg.com/en/
The biggest mistake M2 have made is not making Garegga available in the UK marketplace, Behind the US it's surely the biggest potential market so to miss it entirely is odd.
I personally hope they port all of these titles to Xbox as with backwards compatibility titles included it's the best place to play STG's/Shmups.

Re: M2 ShotTriggers Mahou Daisakusen Coming to PS4
The markets they skipped with the international launch are the ones that require additional work, basically--countries with unique certification requirements, language requirements, etc or countries that weren't covered at a basic level by id@xbox don't currently have the game but it's not like they were deliberately singled out, it'll just take more time before they can be released there.
They seem taken aback by the number of enquirers from ESL countries, not just because they weren't aware of the demand from specific countries like, say, France, but they also assumed that anyone who might want these games would know how to buy them from the US store, especially as Japanese fans do that sort of thing all the time.
Mahou Daisakusen will be the real test, they've added a ton of flavour text that'll take way longer to translate than games previous.

There's a good selection of XBLA/Games on Demand games available for XB1 but retail-only games tend to get skipped over.DejahThoris wrote:I thought most 360 shmups were not backwards compatible with the Xbox One. Am I mistaken?

Does anybody know how to unlock the “Don’t hit the princess!” trophy for killing Bashinet in 6.5 without firing a beam? I’ve timed him out without shooting and I’ve bombed him to death but no trophy either way.

Destroy Bashinet but dont hit the princess in his left hand a single time (If you hit her she's shown in the target display with infinite HP)Rupert H wrote:Does anybody know how to unlock the “Don’t hit the princess!” trophy for killing Bashinet in 6.5 without firing a beam?
