Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I finally got a 3dfury to use on my bvm d24 with my pc. What kind of cable do I use to connect the fury to the bvm?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Is 720p or 1080i better for a PS3 on a CRT? Things like framerate of games, Bluray and DVD movies, motion clarity, etc., native resolution, are all taken into account.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
A component cable with one vga/d-sub to 3rca adapter and three rca to bnc adapters, or a vga cable with a vga/d-sub to 5bnc adapter.peterwright1234 wrote:I finally got a 3dfury to use on my bvm d24 with my pc. What kind of cable do I use to connect the fury to the bvm?
I think very few games on PS3 are rendered at over 720p, so you will not be missing detail by displaying them at that resolution. As for movies, it's generally better to use a modern display with 1080p24 support (for DVDs, you may want to invest in a video processor with cadence detection).GeneraLight wrote:Is 720p or 1080i better for a PS3 on a CRT? Hey people I live in the UK
Could someone recommend the most reliable ps3 console ?
I'm mainly going to use it for ps3 games I don't need it to be backwards compatible.
Cheers

Now that you can install CFW without a hardmod, check out the date code to try and guarantee you get one that's downgradeable.Axelay wrote:Hey people I live in the UK

If you are in the US, you can look on eBay for vga to bnc cables manufactured by Extron (male to male of course). If you're in Europe, I wouldn't know myself.peterwright1234 wrote:which type of cable is recommended or does it not matter? Also where should I buy it?. Thanks for the help.

What are you calibrating to? 2.2 gamma? IEC 61966-2-1? ITU-R BT.1886?ross wrote:Is it normal for consumer CRTs to have a seemingly much higher gamma (with crushed blacks and all) than calibrated LCDs?
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
What's the brightness and contrast levels you're running it at? If the tube is old, you probably need them set at a high level, which I guess could result in crushed blacks.

I mean you're comparing a calibrated screen with an old uncalibrated screen. Yes, there will be differences.

Black crush is the most common difference I see across different screens. The other thing I see is way too much blue.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
In general. The lower spectrum of greys is probably crushed to make scenes seem more dramatic (conjecture on my part).
Brightness makes lower end blacks brighter but if your low end colors aren't calibrated then you might see unwanted color shifts. So in this insurance, your low light colors might have too much blue, but because the brightness was down, you never noticed it.

I have a ton of faith in Frank Cifaldi and the folks at Digital Eclipse. You can immediately see the quality drop-off between Mega Man Legacy Collection 1, which they did, and 2, which Capcom handled internally.creamygarlicdip wrote:you guys see the street fighter 30th anniversary collection announcement? sounds pretty rad. claims they will be arcade perfect. i hope they include some decent scanline/crt filter. will include basically all the 2d street fighter games.
MMLC had 2 types of scanline filters, so I assume the Street Fighter Collection will have at least one or two.

oh thats cool! yah i imagine they want to get it right so they don't piss off the community. im impressed they would put all the games in one compilation. typically they don't make those kind of packages, im happy about it.bobrocks95 wrote:I have a ton of faith in Frank Cifaldi and the folks at Digital Eclipse. ive wanted a collection like this for awhile, hyper fighting and sfa2 are my personal favourites.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Any tips/guide for safely working on the Game Gear? I have one on my desk with the LCD and backlight removed that zapped the hell out of me when my hand brushed up against something (don't know what wasn't paying attention).
Ideally I'd like to cover up/completely remove the circuit path that generates the higher voltage. Right now I'm feeding it power from the AC adapter, can I just bypass that and feed 5V to the GG board from my fpga board?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Look up the install for Mcwill LCD, it shows what parts to take out for the screen/ cathode.
Basically its the yellow transformer, the cap and coil near it and the fuses either side of the screen.
The GG needs 1.3/5/9v lines to run, and you will shock your self even with batteries.
Alternatively you could run 2 contacts from that circuit and make your gamegear a sweet taser.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Thanks. I literally just finished taking a power electronics class, learning all about different transformer converter topologies...Should've known better.
Any idea what the 9V is used for? Audio?
Taser could be interesting :p

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Its not really 9v, its more unreg v+.
Its a direct passthru of the power supply. Not sure what the GG uses it for but I know Tims RGB board uses it to avoid extra strain on the stock system.
The tube runs 34v from memory so you can sever that line if you want.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
The screen is a goner on this unit so I had already cut out the tube and the LCD. I'm going to remove the transformer and stuff you mentioned.
Is the 9V just the battery voltage? I may just try supplying the GG with 5V to its 5V line, bypassing its regulation circuit.
Update,

Went ahead and removed the transformer, inductor, and what seemed like the input/output caps. I wonder if it's even necessary to remove the fuses, caps, and coil...once the transformer is out, the circuit can't step up the voltage. Meter doesn't read anything higher than 5V at transformers, coil, fuse, and fluorescent solder points. It also seems to run fine using 5V clipped onto the battery input, you just have very little headroom as it crashes around 4.5-4.7V.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
So I just received a Wondermega. I'd learned after I bought it but before it arrived that it only outputs composite and S-Video.
What are my options to get this running through my OSSC? Just the RGB mod? My new TV absolutely trashes composite signals, and doesn't have S-Video

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
basically yes.Just the RGB mod?
external composite/s-video to RGB/YUV boxes are quite rare and expensive. There are DVD recorders, which offer s-video and can output via YUV (in the US) or RGB (in Europe), but it's hit or miss. Newer ones (with upscaling) will process the image, add lag and might not be compatible with 240p, but there certainly are older units that should do the trick. But then again these are huge compared to your Wondermega and OSSC.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Fair enough. My TV also apparently doesn't have YUV input either, I don't think. We purchased an LG OLED55B7A on a really solid sale a week or two before Thanksgiving here. It's lovely for most things, and I replaced my framemeister with an OSSC because of how well I've heard it works so well for 4k displays. Everything seems to be great, just did not realize there was no S-Video or composite on the OSSC.Fudoh wrote:basically yes.Just the RGB mod?

I'm not too worried about the RGB mod, it looks easy enough, and I've done similar work in the past (PS2/Wii modchips, PCE Duo-R RGB). I'm not sure which port to sacrifice though.
It'd be nice if there were an off-the-shelf cable for it but I fear I'll have to make my own (something I've yet to do on myself).
Thank you for your assistance!

you can repurpose the Midi port. You won't use it for anything else anyway.I'm not too worried about the RGB mod, it looks easy enough, and I've done similar work in the past (PS2/Wii modchips, PCE Duo-R RGB). I'm not sure which port to sacrifice though.

Fair enough, just need to wire up a cable.
Actually, one more Wondermega question that doesn't deserve a thread: Internet says it's 32X compatible. But what needs to be done for wiring to/from it since it doesn't have standard Genesis video out? Is there a special cable? More curiosity than my actually being worried about playing 32X on it.
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
You would need a custom cable to get the Wondermega's output signal into the 32X. All the info is available, so it shouldn't be too hard. The original passthrough cable passes video *AND* csync from the MD into the 32X. I don't know if these two are actually required though, or if either or would be enough....

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Well, I won't be using the S-Video port either, honestly. Could I tap into the S-Video connector instead, purchase an S-Video to SCART cable, and just switch the pins around on the SCART side to match my mod? I found an nice older Monster brand cable, and that's likely nicer than whatever I could hack together for a MIDI solution, as I've never made a cable before of any sort.Fudoh wrote:you can repurpose the Midi port. Thanks for that info. I don't even think the 32X would sit flush in the cart slot without cutting away some extra plastic. But it's a neat idea anyhow.Fudoh wrote:You would need a custom cable to get the Wondermega's output signal into the 32X. All the info is available, so it shouldn't be too hard.
