searching shmup arcade 80s (bonus asteroid falling sequence)

Post by caincan »

sorry to create a topic. tried to figure if there was a specific subject, found only some , none generic.

well.. the STG game was in area 1980-1985. no more for sure.

STG Shooting game. Tate mode. like a "Pleiads", a basic decor for the ship surroundings and the black sky. but with some subtle things. the only thing i remember clearly..

there was a bonus stage. the only way to destroy an asteroid falling directly on the player ship, was to let A-button hit automatically all the hits, 20 or 30?. it was nearly impossible to complete the sequence without this trick.

obi wan.. you're last hope  .

Sounds like it was one of those Sega/Gremlin produced arcade STGs back in the early 1980s, possibly with "Astro Blaster" in the title perhaps? I do recall this particular Sega/Gremlin STG having a tate arcade monitor setup indeed.

Was thinking Astrosmash, but that probably isn't it.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

thanks for your hopes but even rechecking videos, that's not them.

astromash has no arcade port it seems. but the action seems more in the spirit of the game i seek memories

sure there was a surface earth or something concrete floor, that wasn't a pure dark space area game (due to limited video display /memory programming in earlier days?)

i try dig in memory.. i suspect there was 2 bonus stages.. the first one, was easier to destroy the falling asteroid, because it was average size. that's the second bonus stage i described in the first topic which was quite impossible without A-button constant fire..

i suspect that was a bad forgotten game at this time even.. we had a little bar in a little village.. only this game for a few months & the so hardddd Amidar came in 4 years of living there  :? ...

the sensation was like a second choice game. in these times, (Phoenix) was the absolute joy when it came for 3 days per year of a little funfair in a average sized van, equipped with some arcades/2pinballs / shootout chigaco coin EM & the so scarce b&w "Secret base sega", absolute shame on SEGA that this game is certainly lost & nowhere can be saved since the set of eproms/etcc  (the goal was to bomb silos on a mountain by digging with the bombs.. kind of Worms in realtime, or a Canyon bomber but more sophisticated)

these games where the debut of 80's.. or the latest of 70's.. but blew us way more than this lost shmup., but the harder i try remember, the more i would like to play it again for the feel & nostalgia.. hoping it's not a lost game not emulated..

The game you are talking about seems to match what I'm thinking it might be.

Halley's Comet (Taito / 1986)
Is this it?

thanks for the up & title (and i try seeing the youtube suggestions at right side). but no for sure, the game is way too modern, and i quit in 1986 the place i lived.

it's perhaps one of those lost little arcade games unemulated i figure. i tried seeking in shmup.com listing thru early years but didnt find it. but i'm not sure their list is 100% full..

This game really does sound like Sega's Astro Blaster.

There is a sequence at the end of each level in which you have to navigate an asteroid field. There are flaming asteroids you can shoot for extra fuel and given you are at the end of the level and running on fumes you are usually tempted into trying to shoot a few, as running out of fuel gives you a game over even if you have spare lives.

It has a basic black background and a blue border around it.

It is possible that this is the game you have in mind but the mind is playing tricks with you? This heavily influenced Megamania for the 2600 - still a really nice game.

thanks for your replies . but not these games. astro blaster has sprites way too large & no bonus sequence. pisces not, zero hour not too, these games are too "rich" in gameplay or visuals  compared to the game we had..

at first when researching i thought about : Satan's hollow, Satan of saturn (it seemed the most in aspect, and because of a falling asteroid, but there it's falling but no straight, not killing the player, just bonus to get, it falls right to left), or Newyork 80, but these are not.

perhaps one day it'll rise somewhere. i have to check when full internet the unemulated mame project.. there are loads of forgotten games..

Wow, that's obscure, I've never even heard of it despite having both Sega & Konami's names attached.

Huh, glad you figured out the game, interesting to see this thread bumped and resolved! Some very innovative games at the time it seems, I can't think of any other Space Invaders style shmup that experimented with "build your own barricades" as a thing. Sega also did Super Locomotive in 1982, a lot of neat gems from that time period that aren't well known!

It seems it's originally a 1981 game, which tracks with the tail end of the Invaders boom. Defender and Konami's own Super Cobra were that same year, Xevious hit in '82 and everything was different after that.

Oooh, you're right, the Konami release was 1981 and then it was apparently updated with revisions and rereleased in 1982.

The only other Space Invaders style shmup that really caught my attention (as there's a ton of lookalike clones that don't feel too special mechanically) is King and Balloon. The mechanic where dying doesn't cost a life and you're only penalized if they manage to capture and make off with the king makes it feel considerably different in how you approach it.

Very cool idea, but I’d like to see someone follow through with its potential. For example, someone channeling enemies down a murder tube a la high level Centipede play. As it is, it just feels random.

Developed by Konami, published by Sega, on Namco Hardware.

Very interesting.

Very interesting.
The perfect trifecta indeed (the 1991 arcade laserdisc game of Dragon's Lair 2: Time Warp was another trifecta joint collaboration between the Leland Corporation, Nintendo and Rick Dyer).
