The White Buffalo (1977) - J. Lee Thompson
(Re-watch)

A surreal attempt at reconciliation?
To be honest, I am not at all sure of the subtext. Maybe its best that way, as I would rather not spoil the dreamlike quality it has.

Here is the sell;
"At the closing of 1874 a haunted, dying Wild Bill Hickcock teams up with a grieving Crazy Horse to hunt a murderous albino buffalo." :shock:

And its got;
Charles Bronson
Jack Warden
Will Sampson
Clint Walker
Kim Novak
Slim Pickens
John Carradine

Dunno if I could recommend it. You will either love it or hate it.

Yeah, I dunno if I view it as any sort of subtext, just pure insanity. That buffalo looks so rad when it charges. My favorite part is probably Bronson waking up in a cold sweat and just starts unloading his pistol into the ceiling.

Only a fool would hate anything with BRONSON. Man, but the giant animatronic buffalo is one of the coolest things, right up there with JAWS and RAZORBACK for me. Can't get enough.

Gook (2017) - Justin Chon

Set in 1992 Los Angeles on the day of the Rodney King verdict.

From the description;
"Eli and Daniel, two Korean American brothers, own a struggling shoe store and have an unlikely friendship with Kamilla, a street wise 11-year-old African American girl."

Yeah, I'm gonna have to say no.

It premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the NEXT Audience Award . . . eh, yeah . . .
Writer/director Justin Chon, though from Los Angeles, was what, eleven at the time? And appears to have no skin in the game whatsoever.
(You know, as a film its ok. Its just, well, let me put it this way; It feels like it was aiming for that Sundance award, if you get my meaning.
The film itself, seems to exploit the 1992 incident, rather than depend on it as a necessary part of the story)

There are stories to be told about this subject matter but;
There is probably good reasons why people don't to tell them and from what I have seen in this film and from the little I know about Justin Chon, he is not the man to tell them.

Note; It has a 93% critc rating and a 92% audience score, on rotten tomatoes.
That site is now officially worse than IMDB :roll:

Was it that bad? I was going to check this out at the Michigan Film Festival but wound up not going at the last minute. Other than not having any skin in the game (does that really matter?) was it not a well told story?

In Bruges (2008)

Two hitmen are forced to flee from London to Bruges after their latest mission didn't go as planned and wait for their boss' next mission. While one loves the Belgium city, the other absolutely can't stand it and this dynamic gives the whole movie a funnier aspect to something that would have passed off as a regular crime drama at first glance.

The comedy is pretty dark and often morbid, which I loved. However, In Bruges is also a mix of genres with its main crime story, comedic moments, a few action scenes, a bit of romance and some drama. As a result, the first half can get a bit slow-paced as the characters and the situation are presented and it can be difficult to undestand what the movie's main focus is. However, I am glad the dark humor never completely disappears and often shows up in unexpected moments.

The only thing I didn't really enjoy was a scene near the end that seemed rather implausible, as
Spoiler
one of the hitmen, after being shot in the neck in the middle of the old tower, manages to climb the remaining stairs, jump out of the window, violently crash on the floor and tell the other hitman where his gun is before finally dying. I thought he was a goner the moment he was shot in the carotid and had a massively bloody neck.
That scene didn't ruin my enjoyment of the movie fortunately, and it set-up a very amusing confrontation, but it feels like it was a bit too over-the-top.

It was not a bad film.
The story or perhaps the direction , would have benefited greatly from a more refined treatment in many parts. It think this can squarely be laid at the feet of Justin Chon himself.
Also Justin Chon lacks onscreen presence. His face is simply uninteresting, his body language - halting.

GaijinPunch wrote:Other than not having any skin in the game (does that really matter?)
Not one jot.
The fact is, if the situation in Los Angeles was not mentioned in the film, it would have made absolutely no difference to the story.
Just like Justin Chon did not need to call the film "Gook".
Did both these choices help get the film noticed? Oooh, you betcha!
I just get the suspicion that given the above, there was also the unspoken sell of, "by a Korean that lived through it" :wink:

The film is exceptionally awards/film-festival friendly and is being turned-out mercilessly with regard to all of the above, I believe?

In the end, the film is ok. But temper your expectations.

Word... that seems fair. Not sure when I'll get to it. We had picked out a handful to see, and some drama ensued or some shit (honestly can't remember) and we didn't make the trek up there. That one struck me as watch-worthy. A lot of the ones on the list looked questionable. Fun Fact: it would have been my first proper film festival (not counting the Chicago film festival which is quite spread out disjointed, and doesn't feel like a festival).

Vanishing Point

Remaster was easy on the eyes - and it played from start to finish which I was concerned about since it was a $4 used DVD from a college book store.

The use of music was incredible - will absolutely be watching again.

Yeah groovy as advertised, glad I discovered it. Thanks Audioslave!
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Not quite up there with Videodrome or The Fly, but I enjoyed that one much more than the iconic but very uneven Scanners. A certain infamous weapon was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen too. :wink:

Flash Gordon. 2/5

Man, this was at best campy (the girl fight) and at worst, well... it hasn't been treated well by time. The music is awesome at least.

The Bishop's Wife - Nice Christmas movie with David Niven (Pink Panther) and Cary Grant. I especially liked the scene where the Bishop (David Niven) got stuck in the chair.

Thor Ragnarok - Enjoyed it quite a bit. I especially liked the Stan Lee cameo in this one. I was a bit disappointed that the Executioner wasn't paired with the Enchantress like in the comics, though.

Boy, is this an uncomfortable viewing in todays amped up identity politics chaos. Very effective, will probably not watch ever again, so not giving it a 5/5.

The Fly is really the best of the Cronenberg bunch. I own a nice mediabook from 84´Entertainment.

Checked out one of those B-rated low budget sci-fi romps under the name of Robot Holocaust. It was released back in 1987 (even though it has a 1986 copyright date at the end credits). The actors that portray the three robots characters all wear rubber masks indicating it's truly low-budget special EFX. The actress, Angelika Jager, (whom plays the shapley character Valaria) is quite easy on the eyes with her portrayal in the "pleasure chamber" scene (which is the only thing worth checking out). This film strongly reminds me of one of those Roger Corman flicks but with some really bad acting and costumes thrown in to round up the mix.

The original plain version without the MST3K commentary. It certainly does portray the film in a different light indeed.

If you didn't like the first I'd just stop there maybe. The rest of the series takes a completely different tone, and each one tries to add to the lore of The Tall Man and his impact on the world. While the first has that sort of dreamy, nightmarish feel, they start to add a bit more humor and action down the road. I personally love the first and enjoy the second, while I hate the third and am pretty neutral about the fourth. I don't even count Ravager since it's not Coscarelli and closer to a student fan film. But yeah, if you didn't enjoy the first then maybe you'll like the more light-hearted nature of the later films. The fans are all over the place with how they enjoy the series. I love the first for its moody, nightmare narrative, unlikely heroes, and light sci-fi reveal myself.

And with all this Cronenberg talk, I actually never got around to Existenz. Dunno why. Probably just because the late 90s and early 2000s is such a relatively mediocre time for films, or at least what appeals to me. I'm definitely in the camp of The Fly and Videodrome, and I also have a real liking to the erotic, chaotic nature of his early Shivers, and anything EVIL CHILDREN like The Brood. Still haven't gotten around to much of his later output, but hard to go wrong with him. Only thing I didn't really care for was Rabid meself.

Just like if you didn't like Evil Dead you could still get a kick out of Evil Dead 2, if you didn't like Phantasm you could still get a kick out of Phantasm 2 because it definitely goes down the same 50% horror/50% comedy route.
