Oh My God! and I thought X-2 & Gradius V were something!

Post by ST Dragon »

And I thought Team17's Project-X-2 (PS-1) had the best 2D hand-drawn graphics and Gradius V the best 2D CG graphics.
This shooter seems to be greatly influenced by Project-X, X-2, T-Zero, Pulstar and the R-Type Series.

Just look at that graphics! Awesome!
I must have this!

Just look at the detail of those fire-flies! I wonder how nicely they’re animated and if they're actually fluorescent and transparent?

How well does it play and sound by the way?
Music is very important in my book.
Does it have cool catchy Boss tracks & a kick-ass fast paced in-level soundtrack? (ala RayStorm, RayForce, Thunder Force V, Thunder Force III, Mushihimesama, EspRade, etc...)?

Any chance the graphics were created by ex-Team17 artists by the way?
The graphics style is evidently very similar and AMIGA-like...

The Top 25 Shooters Thread at shmups.com forum, turns out to be a very informative shooter source indeed!

If that's not cool then what is?

It used to be known as T-Zwei. Don't waste your time on it.

Seriously though.......do we need a new thread for each game?

"Einhänder rip-off with really flat graphics", I think one review said about it.

I personally I think X-2 was more fun and that it looked better.
Heck, even the impossible Project-X was more fun.

According to the credits, no Team-17 member (Rico Holmes made the Project X gfx) were involved in the gfx.

There should be a PC demo of it. Try getting hold of it.

Yeah... I just noticed, that ship does resemble the Einhander craft.
Oh, well, what a pity. The graphics did look awfully good however.

I would say Cloudphobia would come close to that, if only the game itself wasn't so short.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

I just played the demo and it doesn't play like an Einhander rip-off. I haven't played it enough to see what kind of powerups are offered, but from my first go around, it felt like Gradius in an R-Type setting. Yeah, it needs some additional speed and a force pod.

About the visuals. The graphics aren't polygonal, they're pre-rendered parallaxed layers - like in Pulstar - but at a much high resolution. So Gradius V does look better when the game is in motion. But it does have some really nice fog effects and the animation is top notch. All in all, this is the best parallax graphics that I've seen. Makes me think of what the Genesis or SNES would look like if it was upgraded with a 128-bit GPU.

It's not a bad game. Is it worth buying? That depends on your wallet. For me? No.

Where can you download this T-Zwei? All download links are broken on every site I've tried so far.

It may be good to mention that, at least AFAIK, X2 was made by just THREE persons:

Coding: Andreas Tadic
Graphics: Rico Holmes
Music & SFX: Bjorn Lynne

Most of the first Team17 games were made by 3 persons too, both Holmes and Tadic, and Allister Brimble doing the sound part.

T-Zero is an Amiga game.

T-Zwei aka Steel Saviour is an PC game. At some point it was going to be ported to the Dreamcast (And PS2, if I remember correctly), but I don't know if that ever happened.

And wait to see what the Cloudphobia guy has up the sleeve... He cleared his site and posted two images and something about december. All the previous development pictures showed this was going the Macross route with missile barrages and epic, mecha bosses.

Let's just hope for a new, improved and updated version.

The JPN version of X2 for the PSX is the one to get if you want a bit better type of gameplay compared to the original European PSX version of the same name. I scored a copy complete with spine and registration card at a used Japanese game shop in the Akihabara district of Tokyo for a mere 2,280 yen. It does feature some pretty cool FMV clips. ^_~

The American game developer/publisher, Acclaim, was seriously pondering a USA PSX release but dropped it like a hot potato. So thus, no proper USA PSX game of it since then.

OK =P

Don't you love Chapter 3 and all the electrical/stormy aura plus the R-typish boss? It is personally one of the best achieved ambience I've seen in a while. (the next one is nice as well but all the green ended up confusing me)

The first chapter is also extremely good but the water, mist and such cover the bullets and that's where the 'euroshmup' stuff comes alive. Of course, not that I mind that, the game is quite hard and puts you on the offensive. Nothing of hugging one side of the screen, you have to go, chain and kill nonstop to power up that stupidly weak main weapon and obtain precious shields and bombs. You have to plan carefully the use of the limited ammo and know beforehand some random 'cheap bullshit' attacks and such.

However, I can't make it past Chapter 4... Gotta keep trying.

edit: oh boy, I just have the worst timing at posting. Period. I'll post in the other thread later then.

Ha ha-I actually quite enjoy the gameplay. The fact that you start off underpowered adds some real tension, and this is alluded to in the Stage 1 introduction.
If you want some real nice graphics/pants gameplay action then try Soldner-X...

You can buy this game for less than £5.00 from medimops.de: http://www.medimops.de/Steel-Saviour-Wi ... 44511.html and they ship worldwide....

...otherwise eMule is your friend on this one...
...and if you check those torrents again now you might be pleasantly surprised

I just finished beating the full game with a trainer. First off this game is gorgeous, its like Odin Sphere in shmup form (graphics wise). The game is incredibly hard, if I had not had a trainer I would have never beat this. I died I think 40+ times on the "Low" setting. The hitbox of the ship is huge, the size of the ship itself. So dodging bullets is nearly impossible at times, panic bombing is a must. The default weapon you have is garbage on the enemies, its a single stream and most enemies take multiple hits. These annoyances aside I think this was a great game to play, when you actually got a good weapon and you are blasting enemies away you feel powerful and its satisfying. This game is an Einhander clone only in the ship design and the weapon stealing mechanic, other than that its a game of its own.

Ha ha-all this talk has made me dig out a copy of X2 and fire it up on the good old PSx.I'd never paid X2 much attention before but it certainly shows what that PlayStation could be capable of graphically, and now I'm loving it :D

I've got the PAL and the Japanese version -the Jap version is great- easier, or should I say- better balanced- far more enjoyable.

I found that when you miss a power up on the PAL version -it was difficult to get back into the game.
