Although the flaws have become more apparent in certain games (I'm lookin' at you DK64) I still enjoy all the N64 Rare platformers, even if the original Banjo-Kazooie is the only one that has truly stood the test of time. I've been holding out on this just not wanting to be disappointed in yet another spiritual successor/remake/re-imagining. The reactions have been really mixed to say the least, but I'm still probably going to buy it and get around to it next year.
I'm completely on the same page here, Banjo-Kazooie remains great every time I replay it, but I can't stomach even playing through the first stage in DK64 due to all the obnoxious requirements of using specific kongs to pick up specific items with no natural reasoning behind it. Fortunately Yooka-Laylee has none of the stuff that DK64 suffered from, in fact, as I was touching on, it probably even goes a little too much in the opposite direction. But if you dig B-K, Yooka-Laylee
won't be a letdown. Just make sure you patch it before starting it up, switch to manual camera, and turn down the volume of the "speech" samples.
A bit disappointing I guess is that the game only have five major stages, but at least they are all much bigger than the ones in Banjo-Kazooie.
One great improvement, is how dynamic all the skills you acquire feel. None come across as redundant, and most have general utility aside from just unlocking access to new pagies. So there are no awkward context sensitive pads here, like in B-K. And the roll move (the one that lets you climb steep hills and move faster) is really fun to use to speed around once you get a feeling for the layout of an area.
Only exception is the flying ability which allows you to skip most platform puzzles in the game - if you want an easy time, just hurry to just before the last area where you get the skill (ie.
don't do that). To add insult to injury, this is also the only move in the game, where both the controls and camera remains frustratingly impossible despite the patch.
