Fun arcade shmups that can be had for less than 250$?

Post by qbit »

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for recommendations for fun arcade PCBs or carts that are still "relatively" cheap to obtain.

I have tried out most of the MVS library, and am searching for something fresh now. Looking forward to learning what people consider to be "hidden gems".

Thanks!

It depends a bit on where you are and what you like. One guy's trash is another one's gem.

Some of the Psikyo shooters will still fit into that price range (Gunbird for example, and the less rare items from the Strikers series).

I'm in Canada (which hurts as far as the exchange rate and general availability of items is concerned) but the 250$ mark can definitely be interpreted as USD :D.

Some titles I have really enjoyed in the past: Twinkle Star Sprites (MVS), Alpha Mission 2 (MVS), Blazing Star (MVS), Castle Shikigami 2 (PS2), DoDonPachi (PS1), Deathsmiles (PC) ...

I'm not afraid of "quirkier" titles, and fantasy themed can be fun too (for example, "Kingdom Grand Prix" & "Dragon Blaze" look like a lot of fun!).

Good suggestion on the Psikyo shooters! Both Gunbird and for example Strikers 1999 look great.

I picked up Gunbird, Vasara 2, Viper Phase 1, Super Spacefortress Macross, and Thunder Dragon all for around $250 or under per board over the last couple years.

Pretty sure you can get Sky Shark and Twin Cobra for under $250. Raiden 1 (shit maybe raiden 2), Vapor Trail, Aerofighters, Thunder Dragon, Strikers 1945

Where is this under $250?? The last couple I've seen on here were $400. Along with the one up for sale now. Not being a jerk, I'm more shocked at the statement and want to know where I can buy one for that price!! :D

The rest of the Psikyo titles are all under $250 still as far as I've seen.

is it still possible to squeeze in esprade or espgaluda PCBs for $250 each? if so those are hard to beat!

should be possible to find an Outzone or Twin Hawk in that range aswell? Great and timeless classics!

Yes, sorry, my price appreciation for the game must have been "dated" (with perhaps some wishful thinking on my end, too).

I am reasonably sure I saw them around that price point a couple of years ago. They had one last year on J+ but at 279 euro that's around 325 USD as well. So perhaps 400 USD is what is to be expected today...

I sure wish I bought some of these titles earlier. Although fairly uncommon Dragon Blaze (PS2) could always be had on eBay for around ~20 / 25 euro a couple of years ago. Nowadays, not so much!

To me it feels like you will get a defect one for that price, but no fully working ones. Everything with cave on it turned to gold.

Not sure about Outzone, but I picked up Fixeight for $250 plus shipping earlier this week.

Here's a South Korean Semicom produced Wyvern Wings - Space Opera (circa 2001) arcade STG PCB for a mere $200.00: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Wyvern-Wings-G ... SwTEJaCSm4 It's quite akin to the Psikyo Strikers 1945 series in terms of gameplay/game mechanics. I've got one myself and it's ace. In fact, it was shown at the 2003 & 2004 California Extreme shows courtesy of Sacramento Amusements back in the day.

Yeah, those NOS of Wyvern Wings jamma pcb kits for a mere $75.00 a pop are long gone. You sure lucked out on getting one at that attractive pricepoint, drunkninja24.

Here's a Taito Sky Shark pcb: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Taito-Sky-Shar ... SwrzdZm9PR

Back to the OP's thread at hand.

What a ton of great suggestions, it's good to see that some great titles still change hands for around $100, as well.

Well, to each their own I guess. In my personal experience, if you know a game really well, you can often tell the difference between emulation and the real thing (audio, input lag). Sometimes to the extent where it's a different game altogether.

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with wanting some authenticity, and preferring items with a history attached to them. That being said, I might not fully understand "kit' (or "sealed" game collectors) :-). Which still does not mean I would call them "idiots" though.

lmao retards PCBs cost money just play that shit in emulators, this is definitely a hot take in 2017 and a good thing to say to make yourself look very smart, and better than the plebs with their hobbies and shit. I know you're specifically trying to find PCBs that aren't expensive but because I'm extremely smart I'm going to lump you in with the penises paying STV thousands on ebay. if you need me I'll be in the akai katana thread talking about how MAME sucks the shit out of my asshole

U.N. Squadron/Area 88. Nostalgia plays a big part, but one of my favorite shmups of all time. Should be able to score one for under $200.
