Re: Xmas on the Tube
I find the lack of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation disturbing.
-Merry Christmas Mr Bean
-Die Hard
-Gremlins
-Home Alone
-A Charlie Brown christmas
Count me in the camp that watches the original Star Wars trilogy (IV to VI) every christmas.
Also here in Québec a local channel has made a tradition for 30 years or so of showing cartoon films around the holidays over a couple programming blocks(including after-school) called Ciné-Cadeau, and while these are not christmas-themed for the most part, they are very much a christmas tradition. The main ones people love seeing the most are Astérix and Lucky Luke ones (I always watch 'em every year) and also Tintin. Yes, we love our french and belgian comics over here. They always show some Charlie Brown and Garfield ones, too.

I like that one quite a bit too. I also like HB's animated A Christmas Story, as well as the unrelated live action movie by the same name.FinalBaton wrote:I find the lack of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation disturbing.
Doh. I forgot to mention the Rankin-Bass specials. Year Without a Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, Jack Frost, Santa Claus is Comin' to Town, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, etc. All good stuff!

Be warned. I have a soft spot for HB stuff. That special actually has a similar plot to the Muppets letters to Santa special, though I like it better than the Muppet special. Too bad the best Muppets special (Muppets Family Christmas) doesn't have a proper DVD or Bluray release.FinalBaton wrote: Never seent the Hanna-Barbera one you mentionned, I will peep it.

Porn.
Two working class dudes, one black one white, just baked a tray of ten cookies together.
An oligarch walks in and grabs nine cookies for himself.
Then he says to the white dude "Watch out for that black dude, he wants a piece of your cookie!"

Re: Xmas on the Tube
When it comes to christmas I have a habit of watching The Goonies, not christmas themed but it somehow fits into the time of bad weather outside, comfy adventure inside. And there is The Snowman of course.
Re: Xmas on the Tube
This list can change depending strictly on the quality of the booze and tobacco available
This is the Armagnac and Long-Filler list;
Scrooge (1951) Alastair Sim.
Being There (1979) - mainly Christmas end/new year
"The Blue Carbuncle", of late but mainly "The Cardboard Box", from Granada's Holmes.
Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
Also, A Night to Remember (1958) has made regular appearances on the list.
If things go tits-up, its beer, a little Virginia flake if available, with correspondingly basic film choices.
C'est la vie.

I forgot this was Xmas. My GF hasn't seen it, and I've not seen it in a while.I recall being underwhlmed when it came out (but didn't hate it). Might give it another day in court this holiday season.Zen wrote:

If you want to ruin your Christmas:
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

<RegalSin> It does not matter, which programming language you use, you will be up your neck in math.

We went to see a 35mm print last year and it was amazing, but all the grain and colour is screwed on the Bluray.GaijinPunch wrote:I forgot this was Xmas. Back OT. Star Wars Holiday Special. Oh yes. Better than the prequels, I'll be watching it between ANH and Empire.

Ouch -- I would assume any high def digital would have the same issues?dan76 wrote:all the grain and colour is screwed on the Bluray.
Looking at my local art house theater which so graciously had a Gremlins / DieHard double feature last year (we went and saw Die Hard, but you could have assumed that), they're doing Christmas Vacation & Love Actually this year. I think Christmas Vacation is going to happen.

Also, as a bonus, I need to see this every year:

Wookiepedia is amazing:dan76 wrote:Back OT. Star Wars Holiday Special. Oh yes. Better than the prequels, I'll be watching it between ANH and Empire.
For a brief instant of relief after so much recent bad news, the former chief's family received the visit of Saun Dann, an amicable Human who ran a trading post in the neighborhood. Dann had come with arms full of presents, and he offered his elderly friend a virtual erotic cassette. That product would conjure the image of a holographic woman named Mermeia, tapping into the viewer's deepest fantasies. As soon as he got it, Attichitcuk inserted the cassette in his mind evaporator and enjoyed his sensual gift for a moment.

Interesting article about the making of the Holiday Special - it was basically to keep up public interest until Empire and help shift toys for crimbo.Mischief Maker wrote: Wookiepedia is amazing:

Re: Xmas on the Tube
I just realized there was a single episode of Black Mirror that I had never watched: The Xmas Special. Downloaded it for a plane ride, and boy did it deliver. All kinds of jolly good feels. Can't wait for Season 4.
