Wii/PS3 VGA (RGBHV) cable.
Hello,
I've been doing some searches through google about this cable and I can't get a complete answer as to what this thing is capable of. Most of the searches lead me here and others to youtube with bad quality or a modding procedure. The question I have is, is this cable worth buying for the Wii and PS2 if you already have component cables? From what I'm understanding, these types of cables transcode a component signal to RGBHV.
I'm a not very good with transcoding but I'd like to assume that there would be no slight improvement over component? For those curious, I recently bought a converter/upscaler that has both component and vga input that outputs to HDMI. However while I could just use the component inputs I'd like to see if the VGA port will work and provide better results (that and I could play both the Wii or PS2 on a monitor). Considering all the talk here about cables, converters (OSSC, XRGB) etc., I thought this would be the place to ask. Thanks in advance.
P.S.
I'm aware that the PS2 cannot output in a progressive signal natively. I already have FMCB + GSM to fix that issue.

Re: Wii/PS3 VGA (RGBHV) cable.

Is this cable?
If it is then I'd say avoid it, it has sync issues with the Wii. It's not made for PS2 but I think I got it to work somehow (passing it through something, maybe a scanline generator?) but it would still de-sync on bright white flashes/loading screens.
I'm assuming you're using an LCD/Flatscreen, if so I don't think you'd get any benefit unless your TV has post-processing on your other inputs, I've read some TVs don't touch the VGA input but that's going to depend on your model of TV.

It can, but only on certain games.Nightzero wrote:I'm aware that the PS2 cannot output in a progressive signal natively.

GSM is hardly comprehensive too- if you are considering the cable find out which of your games work well with it.

The cable i'm talking about which is similar to the Mayflash is here. Unfortunately it ran out of stock before I could purchase (which tbh is a good thing). I think I'm not going to bother with any variant due to the flickering or random blackouts the cables produce. Instead I'll just save up to get an OSSC.
Also I forgot to include the converter/upscaler I'm using here.I couldn't edit my post since I submitted and had to wait. Anyway here's a video someone did on it if anyone is interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma6YFSLH9AI
@Lawfer, the main menu including ULaunchELF iirc output in 480i. I meant to say that for those two things not the few games themselves.
Thanks for the replies.

Would this thing add a ton of lag?Nightzero wrote:Also I forgot to include the converter/upscaler I'm using here.I couldn't edit my post since I submitted and had to wait. Anyway here's a video someone did on it if anyone is interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ma6YFSLH9AI

The unmodified outputs of the Wii and PS3 don't allow for a true RGBHV signal sent over VGA. The Xbox 360 does however.

A couple things to add here:
1) PS2 and PS3 output 480p RGB with sync on green, which many monitors actually accept, especially older ones. So you can get away with just using a typical component cable and 3-RCA>VGA adapter to hook it up to the VGA port on your monitor.
2) If a game doesn't look right forced to 480p in GSM, you can always use 960i, which is 480i line doubled, and thus compatible with most monitors.

I tried it on my 55" Toshiba and have noticed any big difference between component and the scaler. On a discontinued Dynex T.V. there seemed to be a delay. Not sure if that's because Dynex TV's are garbo or what. Anyway that device causes vertical lines on black screens and for the Toshiba its very noticeable however despite that it goes away. Like with all the cheap scalers they have video noise and this one is no different.DoomsDave wrote:Would this thing add a ton of lag?Nightzero wrote:Also I forgot to include the converter/upscaler I'm using here.I couldn't edit my post since I submitted and had to wait. In comparison to the other cheap scaler I use this has 3 brightness options one of which brings the brightness closer to component. When using that option noise is much more apparent but I'm able to reduce it by turning the brightness down. My TV also has a Gamma feature and that doesn't seem to worsen the video noise.
@Bazooka Ben, I already tried a the adapter and it failed on all devices that had a port.

If you're located in the US, the Gefen VGA to DVI/hdmi scalers are cheap and plentiful on eBay, and will most likely perform better than no-name products.. add a little more to that and you can get a Kramer VP-425, which has very nice upscaling and also handles 240p correctly (at least from a PS2).

Were you running at 480p? That's the only way it works.Nightzero wrote:@Bazooka Ben, I already tried a the adapter and it failed on all devices that had a port.
