SFC ghosting with RGB - possible to fix?

Post by Akira »

Hey guys,

I bought an SFC earlier this year, and had noticed I have a bunch of issues with video output on RGB, so I was wondering if there are any fixes for it that you know of.
I really didn't know these guys had issues through RGB, I never heard of things like ghosting on RGB and this is my main culprit! My LCD TV was giving a bunch of checkerboard garbage, but my Commodore 1084 CRT doesn't give that, but I still get ghosting to the right of everything.

My motherboard model is SNS-CPU-RGB-01
I saw the comparisons here:
http://retrorgb.com/snesversioncompare.html
and I get more ghosting than the RGB-01 pics shown here.

Here's some examples (click the images for full res):

It's not like I mind it THAT much, but if there's any fix I can apply to it, I will.
Oh, and I don't want to buy another SFC (Jr.)

Any help appreciated!

Hi Akira,
there's an ongoing investigation into various SNES issues and we already have an issue with what people call their video problems.
To help with that, your issue is commonly called early SNES model blur (and not ghosting, which is a different problem ;)).

Can it be fixed?
Usually not, as it's a flaw (or design decision?) within the PPU2 chip on the motherboard.
This cannot be corrected with a simple modification.

But you may be in luck, if you use an OSSC!
Someone developed a special deblur filter for this upscaler, that should make it into the official firmware soon.
Using that, a clever algorithm attempts to de-blur a typical early SNES image.

If you don't have or want an OSSC, then you will need a 1Chip console. That SFC (Jr.) would be fine.
1Chip consoles fix that blur but they do require some different mods.

Amazing, more reasons to get an OSSC. It's been on my wishlist for some time, but at the moment I cannot afford it.
Eventually, I will get one.

I really don't want a Jr. because it looks butt ugly :D The main reason I got an SFC was that its design looks the best out of them all IMO.

Thanks for yoru reply ! I will put my mind to rest regarding this problem and deal with it.

The reverse LPF on the OSSC does work, but it basically amplifies vertical line artifacts on the early consoles, so the side-effects might be worse than the improvement. Perhaps somebody will figure out a mod that deals with the vertical lines?
