Hello Mr. Shmupo.
The election is drawing near, have you decided on your vote?
If you haven't, please let the Shooting party make the most of your precious vote.
Thank you, and have a nice day.

Nullstar disqualified it from last year's poll on account of it being more like an arena shooter, so I'm sticking to that for now.Bydobasher wrote:Are we counting Asteroids as a shmup?

I have most of my list ready and will post it in time.Turrican wrote:Less than a month remains, and a lot of previous voters haven't cast their vote yet
Am waiting for Under Defeat to see if it deserves an entry, that and some other stuff I am thinking of changing.
It will be there though.

I just did, thanks for noting!Turrican wrote:Less than a month remains, and a lot of previous voters haven't cast their vote yet:

for my own reference, I checked as far as howmuchkeefe's vote.
I can’t believe I almost missed this!
Better late than ever I guess.
Well, after going through the votes it’s not very clear of which one will make to No.1 but the following should make it to the Top 10:
1945 Strikers series
Axelay
Battle Garegga
Border Down
Gradius V
DonPachi Series
ESP series
Ikaruga
Mushihimesama
Raiden Series
R-Type Final
Radiant Silvergun
Shikigami series
Thunder Force series
There might be a surprise cut by Thunder Force III & in the Top 8, a few AMIGA entries like Apidya, Genesis Gaiares and maybe even some PCE DUO shooters like Lords of Thunder, but we’ll just have to see.
I wouldn’t be shocked if Mushi makes it to No.1 this year! It a true master piece and I see that it has received quite a few votes all ready.
Anyhow, I really wouldn't want DoDonPachi being No.1 again this year, as it definitely did not deserve it the past 3 years in a row!
I mean, come on now people, be creative.
Some awesome shooters that I decided not to include in the vote are:
1945 Strikers Plus (Neo-Geo)
Agony (AMIGA)
Android Assault - The Revenge of Bari-Arm (SEGA CD)
Arrowflash (MD)
Baryon (PC)
Border Down (DC)
Disposable Hero (AMIGA)
Eliminate Down (MD)
ESP Ra.De. (Arcade)
Download 2 (PCE DUO)
Dragon Blaze (Arcade)
Giga Wing 2 (DC)
Guwange (Arcade)
Image Fight II (PCE DUO)
In The Hunt (PSX)
Last Resort (NEOGEO)
Metamor Jupiter (PCE DUO)
Radiant Silvergun (Saturn)
Super Spacefortress Macross/Chou-Jikuu Yousai Macross (Arcade)
Thunder Force II (MD)
Verytex (MD)
I might change my mind later though. It seems that 25 shooters is just not enough, maybe it would have been better if it was Top 30.

Man, I'm all for creative use of the weighting system, but srtaight powers of 2 all the way down is a little abusive. The 10th pick is getting about 0.1%, and 11-25 combined are getting even less. Might as well have voted for 5 games, the other 20 are just padding to get around the short-list penalty. I admit I did some heavy weighting last year, but I kept myself to 5 tiers and only went as high as 81 points.
No, I don't have a better idea about voting.

I predict this list setting the board back a few years. Almost depressing.
Considering how many people couldn't get the voting process right, I doubt they read this:
Considering how many people couldn't get the voting process right, I doubt they read this:
Honestly now.voters should be familiar with nearly all (95+%) of the games on previous years' top 25 lists. Furthermore, they should be equally familiar with nearly as many (90+%) of the shmups on previous years' honorable mention lists. And, to the extent that other games voters have listed are available, would-be voters should be familiar with 50%-65+% of those games, as well.

Yeah, getting familiar with all those shmups takes some time and discipline, not to mention some spare change. I don't expect all others to approach this whole thing with the seriousness that I do-- after all, that's probably not so healthy. I mean, I'm not losing sleep over it, but the bottom five or so on my list just doesn't seem right somehow and it bothers me.
I made a few changes today. I finally got to play Batsugun, and it was all that I'd hoped. Definitely deserves a place on my list-- probably deserves a higher one, but I haven't had the time with it yet to be confident on the matter.

And this month has been busy for me, to say the least.

What's your suggestion, Rob? Either we make less strict rules, or we simply put a "minimum number or posts before you can vote" trick...Rob wrote:I predict this list setting the board back a few years. Almost depressing.

Shatterhand is right, I could easily bring up 50 favorite shooters from the back of my head.
But 100! Now that would be some vote!

I think people should just read the rules and follow them. It's also a bit ridiculous for people with 10 posts to come around and vote... Not that 1400 posts should be a requirement, it's just a list to represent the shmups forum.Turrican wrote: What's your suggestion, Rob? I have an idea for next year's poll.
Just from up of my head, so it's only an idea but anyway.
First there is a nomination phase:
Nothing special, all members are allowed to nominate their favorite shmups. And last years entries are nominated automatically.
After this nomination phase (say a month?) it's the rating phase:
All nominated shmups are listed in a thread and everyone is allowed to rate EVERY shmup there. Maybe give points from (1-10)
So, if someone knows all of them he can give best rankings to his favorite games and lower the rankings of shmups he think don't deserve the top places. If a game got a minimum of rates (to avoid top average scores by 2 voters). Then the average score counts.
The way it is now, good or average games that most users know will get the top spots in the end. i.e. DoDonPachi.
This is just an idea anyway, and it needs to be evolved I think...

They're both nothing to right back home about, but the AMIGA version does have slightly better visuals & nicer music (obviously)Neon wrote:I've only played it on Genesis but it was pretty mediocre. Is the Amiga one any different?Battle Squadron
