overlays/shaders/bezel resources for 1280x1024 5:4?

Post by Skykid »

This is a terrible monitor resolution to find resources for because nobody seems to have it or want it. Unfortunately I'm stuck with a 19" monitor with a 1280x1024 5:4 resolution.

I've managed to tease the settings into fairly reasonable shape dimensionally, but very little can be done with the current overlay/shader sets I have, and every time I search even for a scanline overlay for 1280x1024 I can't seem to find anything at all.

Ideally I'd like to find appropriate

Overlays: Scanlines / Arcade CRT bezels

Shaders: Anything that does decent scanlines with an all round decent CRT look

I don't know if anyone knows of a resource where I can find these things for the size I need, but I'd certainly appreciate the help if you do!

Many thanks.

Nobody?

I can't believe this resolution is so unsupported :(

Is it possible for me to convert assets like overlays to the right dimensions for 5:4 using photoshop?

Why not just set your videocard to 1280x960 or 1280x720 in 1:1 pixel scaling mode?

I don't really understand where on the screen you'd like to show the bezels ? Your game usually fills the whole horizontal screen size and on top and bottom you have merely ~ 50 px of space left.

I'm not a fan of scanline overlays, at least not on the Pi. You can usually tell they don't look great and somehow different in terms of sharpess compared to the pixels in the background.

Your best choice would be to pick a shader that can display scanlines properly on a 4x integer scale.

@ Guspaz I'm not running anything off PC hardware so I don't have that option.

Fudoh: Since we last spoke I've been toying with it as much as possible. I applied your bilinear simple shader to replace pixelate and tried various adjustments. The full screen options I have at 4:1, 5:4 non Integer are ok, but there's a loss of quality and it's clear the aspect is incorrect. Hence if I compromise and select a smaller window at integer scale I get a superior picture. That leaves an area to be filled, and on a "19 monitor it *may* be a compromise I'm willing to make IF I can get decent assets to compliment it.

I totally agree with you regarding scanline overlays, but I've tried my scanline generator between the monitor and Pi and it causes screen flicker, so that's out.

At the moment I'm using an incorrect aspect scanline overlay that needs to be set at 1.20 to be even, but the lines are fat.

At the very least, I'd like to see what my options look like with shader and overlay assets at the correct aspect - I just can't believe they're so tough to find at this resolution :(

There's a scanline version of the bilinear scaler included. You have to try if you can get even scanlines from it (only with vertical integers) and you definitely have to REDUCE the scanline intensity on this one. But it's lightweight, so give it a try.

I still don't understand why you have that 4:1 AR option available and why it works for you. Is this for CPS only or do you get the same effect on console emus ?

I've found there's quite a lot of variance between consoles, not all will look like the CPS1.

But it's all weird. Right now I tried Megadrive, video settings are aspect ratio Custom with Integer On, set to a x2 scale (640x448). It doesn't fill the screen, I've got thicker borders top and bottom with half as thick borders left and right - but the size is passable (a surrounding bezel overlay might do well here).

EDIT:

The Bilinear Scanlines apply properly at the integer, but appear incredibly thin and dense. Real scanlines have a little more width between them. How would I go about adjusting the thickness and width in the GLSL?

EDIT:

On closer inspection, no, they're not quite right at X2 scale. They're a little off if you look carefully, with certain lines spaced too widely, causing banding. If I put the scale to x3 and check, yeah, they're perfect - but then the screen is once again blown up way larger than the display! Back to square one.

I'm almost tempted to get a 10 EUR 5:4 screen from ebay just to give this a try....

10 Euro? Where do you find those?

I might attempt to make a video to show the anomaly in action.

90% of all PC monitors from about 10 years ago were 17" or 19" 5:4 with 1280x1024. You can get these almost for free in your local classifieds.

Ah right, you're talking about old Dell monitors or similar with terrible screen quality that nobody wants anymore?

The LG panel I'm using is definitely a cut above that, I was just wondering where I was going to be able to get another for 10 Euro.

Hate 5:4 at the moment though

I'm still using a 5:4 monitor for web browsing and office and don't see that changing anytime soon. I must not be alone, since there are still a few models in production (I've recently bought a NEC EA193Mi).

However I don't generally use it for gaming, so I am not able to contribute to this thread..
