Yeah, my wife does that too. Only she was'nt my wife but a middle age male cop, the DDP DOJ was my car and the high score was the number on the ticket he gave me. And we did'nt even have sex

About the worst perpetrator in my house is my cat: as cats are prone to do, she could generally care less about me except when I'm trying to concentrate on something, be it homework, playing a game, or whatever. If I forget to shut the door to my room and turn one of my systems on, there she is, jumping on my lap and purring like an idle car engine...'course, I can just pause if I need to, but most of the time I just kinda grumble. As for the human habitants of my house, they care even less than the cat about my games, that is to say not at all, heh. 'Cept when they need me for something, which is ALWAYS when I'm the farthest I've ever been in a game, and pushing a high score. But them's the breaks.

And MSD, I'm not sure what's scarier: that there's some gal out there who's attracted to shmupping skills, or that you managed to find her. In fact, I still don't believe you 100 percent, heh heh.

My ex always just rolled her eyes when I talked about shmups. Then she'd change the subject to Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts or something. Blah.

I just came back from the arcade, playing ESP RaDe... and there was an attractive Asian girl watching O_________o;;; and I was practically in the process of doing a personal best run too! Except the girl's attractive Asian boyfriend was also watching... and they were playing Zero Gunner 2 together earlier... I'm so jealous!!! I was playing Yusuke and flying right up to those huge mother****ing floating platforms on JB's level and getting 16X everywhere... and then I finally got 16X on the stage boss... the dude muttered something in Mandarin and the two of them left... and then I lost all my lives in Irori's level :(

But I really need to get my life together before I'm ready for another relationship... I'm barely responsible enough to handle my own, let alone have someone else come in with all of her own baggage....

Hey, that's the great the thing about the intarweb. I might just be making this whole thing up. Or not.

Oh, and I don't think it was my shmupping skills (or lack thereof) that caused her to say that. I think she just thought I looked cute, hunched over my monitor and cursing at the game.

Wow... a lot of replies here. Nice to hear everyone's story. After I wrote this last night, I was playing Ketsui and she came in and said like one stupid little thing. As usual, instant, death. So I threw out my usual 4-letter word surrounded by God and Damnit. She was washing dishes later, and I came up and hugged her or something. She's like "don't bother me when I'm doing something". I told her it was the exact same as when she talked bullocks with me when I'm playing games. She smiled and agreed. I told her not talk about stupid shit while I'm playing games... particularly when the TV is tilted on it's side.

I remember that happened while playing at school. It was pretty crowded that day, and this girl who smelled extremely nice was standing next to me, watching her friends play some racing game. Then she started watching me play Strikers Plus. All of a sudden I couldn't concentrate anymore.

Let me put it in this way: there's a reason i play my games at full volume.

Here's an example: (note: right now i live in a students' hostel with single rooms but a shared kitchen)...

"What?I can't hear you, i'm shmupping!"

"Ah bah, if you want to join you know where we are!"

Not that i don't enjoy parties, but after some serious shmupping, of course.
About women: well, my ex learnt how annoying was to be disturbed when playing when i started trying to be flirty when she was playing some puzzle bobble, from that moment she learnt not to disturb me

Back on topic, my gf is pretty accepting of me playing games, unless it's time to eat. She'll apologize if she disrupts me and messes me up. It's the hogging of her internet that irritates her (and rightfully so, I'll admit).

My wife is a gamer, so this is less of an issue w/ me. Although she doesn't understand my fixation/fascination w/ shmups. She's into Animal Crossing & Harvest Moon, as well as fighting games like Tekken 2 & 3. I can't get her to do anything shmuppy. However, there are times when she thinks I have too much gaming stuff. She rolls her eyes every time I talk about adding a new console to my collection (I have 13).

I wish my wife was any sort of gamer, then she could understand better. The only thing she likes to play is simple puzzle games on the web, generally word-oriented ones. Her favorites are Word Whomp and Tumblebees on pogo.com. She doesn't play that often, but when she does she likes me to come help her spot the words.

My wife hates games for the most part, but had a very, VERY brief stint with Zelda: Minish Cap. She never beat it, and I had to kill all the bosses for her, but she loved walking around looking for stuff. When the new GC one comes out, I'm sure she'll watch me play for a bit. The only other game I used to play that she liked watching was Shenmue, mainly b/c it's so serene.

As soon as I get into a game, my wife starts asking me shit and asks me why I would rather play these damn games than spend time with her. The reason I even play when she is home is because she is on the phone with a friend and that can take a good 30 mins before she is off. But for some reason, it seems like,

"Hmm... Christy, I'm going to have to call you back, my husband has been playing for a few minutes and I'm going to go distract him so he'll die. As soon as he turns it off due to the guilt trip I'm going to unleash on him, I'll be calling you back."

That's exactly how it seems, because as soon as I turn it off to go hang with her, she's back on the damn phone for another extended conversation. Do I dare try to play again? Of course! But guess what happens? Yep, she does it again. I swear she does this for fun. It's kind of funny if I think about now, but when you are in a good run, it drives me fucking crazy. I sure do love my wife.

Oh yeah, she REALLY hates when I'm on the forums. She actually hid the mouse one time so I couldn't go on here. I felt like a addict who had his pills taken away. I was like, "Just one more thread! I need to read just one more! I'll do anything! Where the fuck is the damn mouse?!" Ahhh, the beauty of marraige.

Well I have a girlfriend for over two years now and we´re going to life together soon. Right now I enjoy my freedom, but GOD SHOULD COME DOWN AND KICK ME IN THE FACE if I ever start whishing she would let me play games and surf the internet for five hours a day.

Being together with someone simply needs responsibility. I never whished she was a gamer, because I don`t need anyone to "accept" my gaming. I understand that while I love playing shmups, someone else might never understand it. Hell, some guy talked to me about Starcraft for about ten minutes and I had to control myself not to show him how ungodly boring that talk about races and resources was.

Put yourself in their position: Coming into the room asking something, and you get an angry face and a "BLAH LEAVE ME ALONE". I guess no one likes this. And I heard too many sad stories about gamers that neglected their women -a close friend ruined his relationship this way and regrets its badly.

But actually, at least shmups can be played in half an hour - Nothing is more pathetic than all those MMO players who play 30 hours in a row, never go out and urinate into the soda bottle because they are too lazy to go to the toilet.

And on a sidenote, when a women tries to trick you out of gaming, maybe she needs some more attention in general. As long as my girlfriend feels cared for, she has no problem when I play for half an hour. Just don`t make them feel that the game is worth more than them. Don`t make them envy a videogame!

lucky man. i don't really know any girls who play games, let alone the games i play. come to think of it (off topic) the only person who will listen to me talk about shmups (aside from all of you) is this kid in my neighborhood, and after i am done, he'll start on about Halo 2 or some such nonsense

I'm a lucky man, my GF is very tolerant of my shmup addiction, knows her DoDonPachi from her Giga Wing, and even likes the odd 2-player with me. She does think it's a bit geeky when I start delving into the intracacies of scoring.chaining or whatever
