Like, there are tons of retro games and hardware fans on that site, and if they don't have a place to go, is there a possibility they'll come here? In particular, I think the Hardware section could see a ton of new people.

And that's not necessarily a good thing. I noticed that NeoGAF's hardware threads had much more accidental propagation of misinformation. So lots of those guys coming here could increase the noise-to-signal ratio.

I doubt it would matter in the long run. The lack of kill on sight policy towards dissent lets discussions flourish relatively unhindered here. Noobs posting bad info tend to raise the ire of heroic men of the farms, who proceed to slap the shit out of them with painful but necessary facts.

Drakon should've declared himself a strong independent gluegun-kin who don't need no solder, and set up shop at GAF or somewhere similarly addled. Instead, he toils here and gets bitch-slapped repeatedly. :[

There were some very good threads with very good information and content (including photos/screenshots), and those fancy "official threads" done very well for games. Would be bad to loose 'em.

I fail to see how neogaf was any different from "general" gaming forums, those always suck and are full of misinformation and shitty hot opinions (just look at /v/ vs /vg/ on 4chan)
it's always way better to join multiple communities for specific games that actually know their shit

Most people over there probably thought shmups were referring to Doom and Quake. Shmups talk was always pretty turrible on GAF, but that's true of pretty much anywhere but here. This forum actually got a lot of love for the most part, and almost all for the hardware section. The people interested in talking about old video game technology have mostly moved to http://www.retrogameboards.com/

I liked GAF quite a lot as a good source for video game news at large (hard to find a single place where you can quickly see news on the whole shindig). Weird to see how it ended, but it's definitely not gonna have any effect on good ole shumps ferm.

I really liked the yearly "post your gaming setup" threads which contained lots of nice setups and inspiration.

Also found the "official" threads for games fun and the light visual style was pleasant on the eyes. Never read enough otherwise to get the a feel for the vibe or why it seems to disliked. The IGN board was celebrating as an example

I think a lot of forums tend to sound pretty alike sometimes, especially bigger ones so I never felt that NeoGaf, although I only lurked and was never a member, housed anything in particularly bad. Then again, I never read all the threads.
