The new Vacivus dropped on Friday, and it's the best UK death metal album I've heard in years. (Not that I listen to much these days, being thoroughly obsessed with shitty punky black metal.) Mixed and mastered by Dan from Cruciamentum, who has done a boss job, I reckon.

I actually listened to this album YEARS ago, still amazing. It's by Robert Rodriguez's band. The second track is played during the credits of Kill Bill Vol.2

Grace Jones performance of "Slave to the Rhythm" in Belgium 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6kSZVtLFygs

What was she here, 62? (and she doesn't drop that hoop once. Even does a few shimmies with it!)
Musically I've always thought 80's pop rather gauche but Grace, man, shes a force of nature.
When the wannabe girls of "the current year" talk about being "fierce", they have no fucking idea.

Anyone remember the Ian McShane intro?; "Ladies and Gentlemen: Miss Grace Jones". Here it is. Play it loud https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0XLzIswI2s

Pretty great, actually! A friend let me borrow his vinyl record, really enjoying it.

I have the desire to learn New Orleans Jazz someday soon. I play clarinet, and usually play with friends that have trombone and trumpet. It would be a nice genre for us to have fun with, and maybe even play on the streets like they do in NO!

Oh, that would be cool. I don't know if you get many American tourists, but many like the street jazz performances.
Jazz here is too confined to close private clubs where you have to pay up to your neck to get in. IF you can get in...
There are some cool concerts by good artists, but they all go to fucking Lisbon, and I have to mingle with rich idiots with their annoying prissy master race accent.

Thou - At the Foot of Mt. Driskill. Think I've been listening to Heathen for about three straight years. RIYL doomy sludge or sludgy doom.

Great Falls - Dressing The Saints. The Beach Boys when not these. ;)

Glad someone else digs 'em. Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of black metal (old Bathory, Burzum and a few others) but the raspy vocals work nicely in Thou.

More synthwave fun. Funny, since all I've been hearing lately is either some form of Jazz or South American/African music.

Nice.

Although no virtuoso, Carpenter cant ever be accused of lacking vision. His theme from Escape from New York has been stuck in my head from back in the day. Vidya music if ever I heard it :)

Worth noting; the John Carpenter Anthology-movie-themes-1974-1998 album are re-recordings. Make of that, what you will.

Also, Jack Nitzsche nailed the mood in and for, Starman (1984). Here is an original recording; "Starman leaves" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nip7k0m08PM. Unforgettable.

Have been taking a deep dive into 70s era jazz / fusion the past few weeks. Starting with Miles Davis Bitches Brew and the offshoots like Weather Report, Return to Forever, etc. A few of the early-mid 70s Herbie Hancock albums like Man-child, Thrust, and Secrets. Good thought provoking stuff that challenges the listener like the same era's prog rock would. A nice final creative expansion before the smooth jazz sound would come into favor later on.

Motorhead's Another Perfect Day (1983). Pleasant surprise, this record, given its polarising reputation. It is indeed marginally slower and significantly more melodic than the classic Fast Eddie records - and I fail to see the issue there. Motorhead one gear down is still pretty goddamn brisk, balls-hard rock n' roll. And though Brian Robertson perturbed Lemmy with his Richard Simmons-esque stage attire, his shimmering tone and the contrast with Lem's guttural bass and pipes is fucking gorgeous. As Lemmy himself declares of the album's opening lick, right before his Rickenbacker rumbles into action: "top-notch." Underrated, I've got to say... a classy album, smooth and hard-hitting from start to finish with zero saccharine.

>I Got Mine

+superb Campbell/Dee-era live performance of Dancing On Your Grave from Stage Fright (2004)

Three discs (Delta, Country, Urban Blues) of loveliness. I saw some clips of this festival on BBC music docs, looked like good times.
