Movies you've just watched
Re: Movies you've just watched
The Fly (1958)
The first half hour was very interesting to see. The rest of the movie had some shocking moments, at least for 1958 that is. The spiderweb scene was probably the most disturbing of all. VERY sappy ending, but nothing is perfect i guess.
Worth watching together with it's 1986 remake, IMO. It's the same situation as The Thing.

Visually impressive, amazing sceneries, wardrobes and sets that look like they cost millions of dollars, bloody fights with men screaming bloody murder...

Ghostbusters.
It is both awesome and timeless.
They should have remastered and re released it last year instead of that steaming pile of shit posing as a Ghostbusters movie.
It would have been cheaper and they would have actually made money.

You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Rollerball (1975)
The game parts were brutal and good, the 70's future sets looked cool to me, but the story seemed kind of sparse.
Caan was pretty cool here.

They did do a recent re-master of the original Ghostbusters from a 4k source to Blu-ray. Not quite the same as a re-release to theaters, but it's something.Stevens wrote:Ghostbusters.

I actually have that female Ghostbusters one on digital now, but only because I got it free for linking accounts to Movies Anywhere.

Blade Runner 2049, in IMAX. A visual feast and very unsettling. Couldn't really ask for more.
I feel like where this movie shines isn't so much "story" or narrative but atmosphere, especially in the games and particularly at the very end.soprano1 wrote:Rollerball (1975)

The most horrific thing I could find in that movie was the depiction of the wife and mother. That 50s flavor. Always screaming or overwhemled.soprano1 wrote:The Fly (1958)

Could be studied in class.
The sequel doesn't change the female stereotype that much.
The 'bread and games' part comes cleary across. That's where all the attention went. Not too convinced about how the society is shown. Bit mellow. Strikes me as a lot of an afterthought. What does the gladiator do in his spare time. Wenches and wine. Oh, and, yeah, mastermind computers.soprano1 wrote:Rollerball (1975)

Blade Runner 2049. 5/5
I've had lots of trouble getting through the original Blade Runner, I kept falling asleep.
The strength in the new film was the perfect marriage of visuals and audio. The music is fantastic.

It's even on UHD-BD and looks rather good, so it's certainly worth it.BrianC wrote:They did do a recent re-master of the original Ghostbusters from a 4k source to Blu-ray. Not quite the same as a re-release to theaters, but it's something.

This is good to know. Thanks.nissling wrote:

I mentioned a re release because my favorite movie going experience ever was going to see Alien: Director's Cut back in 2003 for its 25th anniversary. I prefer the original, but the one scene I wish they had kept is during the aftermath of Brett being taken - when Ripley and Parker run into the room. Other than that I prefer the original, and while I'm thinking about it I prefer the original cut of Aliens too.

One of the things I really like about this that later adaptations miss is that Arthur is in his own way just as exceptional a character as Merlin, as shown in this early scene.soprano1 wrote:Excalibur (1981)

Fuck Yeah!
In the Sam Neil adaptation and other Merlin-centric versions, Arthur is just an easily-replaceable patsy propped up by the wizard the whole time.
Which makes Merlin's assistance in the rape of Igrayne that much worse in those adaptations because there really is no end to justify the means.

Cold Sweat (1970) with Charles Bronson
I saw this first time around 10pm last week.
It was an exciting movie with some nice turn-arounds and the driving scene is hilarious for today's standard of course. But very typically for that era, I like that kind of stuff.

Starman (1984)
Interesting Carpenter movie. Jeff Bridges did a great performance. The effects are nice-looking, except for the part where he grows from baby to adult.
Nice sounding synths here, really dream-like stuff.

Mafia! (1998)
Parody of the Godfather movies. Even with Lloyd Bridges (one of his last movies before passing away), it was kinda weak. Funnily enough, back in 1998 this movie was bashed in favour of There's Something About Mary, which had come out a week before or something. That was a good one!
Dark Star (1974)
Damn, what a crazy SF movie. That pet alien was...interesting. No one seems to give a shit to what's happening around them. I guess that's the effects of their mission and the time they spent in space.

I remember liking The Freshman (1990) quite a bit, though it has been awhile since I have seen it. While not a mob movie, Hold that Ghost with Abbott and Costello has some hilarious mob related hijinks.

On the subject of mob/gangster film, I very much enjoy Millers Crossing, by the Coen Brothers.

While not focused on the mob, it's a Mad Mad Mad Mad Mad world is a hilarious movie about a mad rush for dirty money from a mob boss who literally kicked the bucket. A ton of classic comedy cameos in that movie too.
Just watched The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Fun movie with Don Knotts as Don Knotts. I'm watching stuff for Holloween. I have also watched It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown, Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, Dracula, Cat People (1942), and The Body Snatcher (with Boris Karloff) recently.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I watched Cat People (circa 1982) in it's entirety and have to say that it's an interesting movie. I like the usage of real-time special EFX for the transformations from human to the big cats. Quite cool for it's time. Reminds me of that short lived TV series called Manimal that aired on the ol' telly back in 1983.
Factoid time: movie special effects wizard, Stan Winston, did the amazing transformation scenes shown in Manimal. Only eight episodes were ever aired though in it's entirety.
PC Engine Fan X! ^_~

I saw Bladerunner 2049 last night. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the movie actually was. Though personally, I could've done without the dragged out final fight scene.
I'm not sure if they were trying to set up for a sequel or not, but I'd be open to one.

Tokyo Project [short]
Pretty charming 33 minute piece about two American's trips in Japans as they continuously run into one another. Lots of familiar filming locations for anyone that's spent time in Toyko, but most applaud worthy is that this might be the only piece of work, documentary or fiction, that filmed in Tokyo and did not show shot of Shibuya's scramble intersection. It's streaming on HBO now.
