Sony PVM 2054QM screen adjustments questions

Post by cachaito »

Hello! It's my first time contact with PVM tube and service menu. Final results are from:

to:

Left side is almost perfect, right side... Well, I don't know if it is possible to make right edge straight with just service menu I bet this may be a capacitor fault (?).
So here are my questions that buggers me:
1) In standard menu, this model has V Hold setting that is separate from service menu Other/ V Hold adjustment. Should I touch only one of them?

2) Linearity pattern shows that outside circles are deformed. Which options in service menu can fix them? Or only recapping can help?

3) Why some outside circles has so messed color focus? On games I don't see such aberrations. I'm wondering why convergence issue is noticeable only on top half of the screen. I thought that is a global misalignment (equal on whole screen).

4) When I start any SNES NTSC game, always for just a second pop ups on top half edge a blue line. I's a weird stuff. I'm not sure if this blue line is part of retrace lines, it's has more vivid blue color and it's pops up only for second during turning on game and the disappears. Anybody knows what it is and how to hide it?

Any hints will be appreciated!

You need to use magnet strips on the yoke to clear these issues.

It's a oplastic strip with a magnetic end.

Also the odd spot magnet on the outer part of the rear can help.

It really is a hit and miss thing to get it as you want it :)

You could try deguassing the screen first. its a mains magnet device.
You switch it on and point it to the center of the screen and slowly spiral out to correct the screen.

You may be better off just forgeting about it as gameplay would lose this.

Vimtoman magnet strips are too much for me. In future I plan to adjust convergence rings, maybe recap geometry board.
One thing form me is odd. Why this convergence issue occurs only on top of the screen? I thought it is a global misalignment.

Spot magnets are better for adjust geometry. my 9inch BVM had some geometry issues and when I opened it up, I was fortunate to find 2 spot magnets in quite odd places. They had been placed right at the front of the tube, as far forward as they could go. When I removed them, they made no difference to the geometry at all. Weird. I used them to make the geometry much better.

After watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hw8aBmY0Akk this seems not that difficult to adjust. I wonder, where I can buy such magnet strips and what "power"/ thickness should they have?

Not sure where you can buy nowadays :)
Have a browse for "convergence strips"

I would buy some Self Adhesive Magnetic Tape/Strip and cut short section.
Stick these onto the end of a thin piece of plastic and at the other end on some double sided tape.
