Can this screen be saved?

Post by dataDave »

Okay, so long story short: After around a year I finally convinced my wife to let me get a PVM. Ordered a SONY BVM1454D - it arrived with a broken front bezel as it had clearly been dropped from a great height. :( Astonishingly the seller sent me a free replacement which arrived with a huge dent in the side and the following screen:

Now, the degaussing circuit works fine. I press the degauss button but it always returns to this screwed up state. If I buy a degaussing wand can it fix this problem? Or will the screen return to this state after each automatic degauss on power on? When I play around with a regular magnet the true colours come striking through, however this is sadly not permanent.

I really don't know what to do... I thought I could get someone to assist me with taking the bezel from this one and applying it to the first BVM (which is fine, besides the busted bezel) but no one in my area wants to work on CRTs. On top of this my wife is furious and wants me to get rid of both of these "broken pieces of shit". I don't want to blow even more money on degaussers/neodymium magnets if they aren't going to work.

Sorry to hear all your troubles.

If this was bought via Ebay, you still have the option of getting your money back. It doesn't matter if you got a replacement or not. If they shipped it improperly that is all on them. It is possible it's covered under the shipper.

I will add if you paid over $200 (if in the states) for this you were taken. If you are okay with smaller screens there are plenty of PVMs available. At this size you are far better off with a PVM or a BVM, esp. since you haven't had one, and you'd get about the same quality picture.

If you can't (or don't want to) there are two options to look at:

There are rings along the crt tube : http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p0wLG7gXKfA/T ... C_0077.jpg
These can be moved around to fix how the color is converging on the display. IF you are lucky they may have moved from the drops and you'll see lines or paint showing how they were set. WHERE GLOVES, the tube itself will not shock you, but if you accidentally touch something on the neckboard you'll get an uncomfortable shock.

Or buy a bunch of magnets and set them in different areas on the inside, YOU WILL achieve an OK screen, meaning you may have to live with a bit of discoloration in corners etc. If you live in the states, HARBOR FREIGHT has 10 magnets for 1.99.

Hi,

Yeah - I played around with the purity rings and yoke landing and to achieve perfect colour I have to sacrifice acceptable geometry.

I think the aperture grille has been knocked out of place with a whack, so I'm wondering if magnets or a manual degaussing wand can bring it back in line.

I paid €80 for the BVM. This is really my only chance at a PVM/BVM as there's no way my wife will let me go out and buy another one after this episode.

Fair enough.

If the grille was knocked out (or at least severely), magnets/degaussing wouldn't get you a temporary fix, as you can get now. Especially if you are getting some uniformity when you do. Meaning if you placed a magnet in one corner and the colors suddenly correct itself.

A wand will not help you. Magnets are your only quick fix option. You can order several sizes and strengths cheaply online. I have fixed many a display by using magnets. Sometimes putting them directly on the tube other times on the inside metal chassis surrounding the tube. The magnets will effect the display nearly anywhere you place them, so experiment. I've managed to all least make it so the corners are the areas that were off, to which then I'd just adjust the picture to hide them.

All is not lost, it's just going to be a pain in the ass, if you can't find the sweet spots on your first few tries.

Yes, I'm absolutely certain. Although I did check that myself after looking at that colour bar screen the first time. :) The purity has been knocked out by almost a full tilt of colour phase.
