Another person reported the same symptoms and it was caused by using a Csync cable without a resistor on the sync line.

I'm in the market for a new TV for gaming on, my current 40" Sony Bravia is 9 years old and whilst a perfectly functional 1080p screen the CCFL backlight and huge bezels warrant an over due upgrade. Since I have zero 4k content and mainly use a PS4 (1080p) and XRGB Mini at 720p with scanlines for retro consoles, should I go for a new 1080p screen or consider a 4k model? I am worried that I will be upscaling all of my 1080p content and it will look worse on a 4k TV than on a native panel. I know 240p is an integer of 4k so in theory when/if a 4k upscaler comes on the marker then results should be better.

Advice would be welcome, I was initially considering the 1080p HDR Sony 43WE753 which seems to be the last of the premium quality 1080p TVs on the market. It seems Full HD is getting relegated to budget TVs which are generally plasticky and not nicely made.

Thanks guys

1080p can be scaled integer to 2160p with no loss whatsoever. And you'll probably have a difficult time finding a 1080p display today that's worth your money anyway.

Can be doesn't mean it is.

I'm in the exactly same boat as Larrs888 (if you're reading this: what TV did you end up with?) :
"zero 4k content and mainly use a PS4 (1080p) and XRGB Mini at 720p with scanlines for retro consoles".

I'm going back and forth between the options of a Full HD Sony KDL-49WE755 or a Panasonic in the same price range on the one hand, and a 4K Sony KD-49XE9005 (European name of X900E), as this model seems to do a quite good job at upscaling, apparently.

Neither option strikes me as a clear winner. Upscaling 100% of the time is kind of stupid, but then the current fhd models are all such unsexy mid-quality pieces.
Any experience with recommendable recent 1080p models or 4Ks good at displaying the retro stuff?

In the end I didn't purchase a new TV a such, I bought a used 2011/12 Sony Bravia off a family member, I forget the model number but its LED so much thinner than my old one and is the model that has edge to edge glass over the screen which looks ver nice. Basically 720p and 1080p look fantastic on it, using my Framemeister at 720p with scanlines on the TV with the glass over the screen makes it almost CRT in appearance :D It also has a VGA input for the Dreamcast which is a bonus!

I'll end up having to get a 4k in due course no doubt, I know MLIG on YouTube are planning a 4k TV video, I think more info on this would be useful. 1080p is an odd resolution for retro gaming, hopefully a good 4k scaler will come out so both retro 240p/480i/p and 720p/1080p PS3/4 era games scale perfectly into the 4k res. On paper it seems best of both worlds with the integer value yet TV manufacturers implement scaling very poorly from what I gather.

One of the things that absolutely drives me mad, is that I don't want a 55 inch gaming TV. I would like a 40 inch, but they're all "budget".
I feel like technology is always moving in a direction to make gaming a frustrating hobby for me.

Is there a window I missed where there was a QUALITY TV, with low input lag, that was around 40 inches? Maybe I could hunt one down.

What's so bad about a 55 incher? It doesn't sound from your post like it's a strict space issue.

Space is one aspect. I've just never been crazy about gaming on huge TVs.
