Shmups with weird weapons

Post by FatCobra »

I was playing Tyrian 2000 when I blasted some carrot-shaped spaceship. Out popped out what appeared a hotdog. When I grabbed it, my ship started shooting out hotdogs! Definitely one of the weirdest weapons I've ever seen, and Tyrian isn't even Japanese!

What other shmups have weirdo weapons?

well, you know.. other than the obvious parody games (the punches from twinbee to mention one), I've always found the einhander weapons weird.
You know, that "arm" that you can twist around... when you twist it really fast and shoot with it, it becomes a really weird weapon.

Of course always keeping in mind that quoting parody games is too easy :P
Alas, Ikaruga is going...

Undesired, unwanted them...
What makes them go?

I immediately thought of the Blade gunpod. Hehe....a shmup Jedi!

Boogie Wings grappling hook is proberbly the weirdest, most unique weapon I've seen in a shmup in recent times. Although saying that in Boogie Wings you can pretty much use any object as a weapon VIA the hook or picking it up as the man running along in the ground, some weapons can include small animals like dogs and such... quite amusing since no real life animal gets harmed! :D

Everyone loves the giant megaphone with silly phrases from Parodius. And yes, far too easy to quote. :)

The Matryoshka dolls (unless I'm imagining things) in Sonic Wings 3 are pretty weird.

I'd say Harmful Park is a sort of cute'em up, but it's not like the rest I feel.
That game has some strange weapons, but not strange for the game. Although turning into an invincible gelatin cake is loads of fun.

I just discovered that in Tyrian 2000 you can turn into a carrot ship that spits out bananas after completing Episode 5.

It's a 50/50 chance however.

Tyrian is kinda weird since you can get weapons that fling food at your enemies.

If I remember correctly the last boss of chapter 5 in Tyrian 2000 is *spoiler* a giant pineapple.

Ever since I played the original tyrian years and years ago it struck me as being possibly the wierdest shmup ever. The story, the absolute absurdity of some of the data cubes you read, the fact nothing makes sense, and nose drip !?!?! Who knows what the developers were on when they made this but they certainly took all their inspiration from various japanese shmups then added their own wierdness to it all.

It's like the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy of the shmup world. I love the weirdness.

R-Type Final had some pretty ridiculous weaponry. Platonic Love, Mad Forest, and Sexy Dynamite, anyone?

Yeah, same in the original Tyrian (or at least the demo) except that you turned into a carrot ship with seemingly 100% certainty.

R-Type Delta has a real strange weapon in it. I forget the correct name of it, but it's that yellow tail-looking thingy you get when you grab a yellow orb. I found myself using it alot though. It's pretty powerful in the game.

That windshield wiper-type weapon you have in Chaos Field was pretty strange to me at first. I never thought I'd see that in a shmup. That is until I discovered what it's purpose was, and thought it was actually a pretty neat idea.

The Blade in Einhander is also a strange looking weapon for a shmup IMO.

people often forget that what this doesn't do in level design, it makes up for it in weapon design and variety

Yeah that was a mistake, that was supposed to have been in the game "Hotdog Storm" (real title)
I wish more coutries would adapt this kind of warfare, just shoot 'em up with your national dishes. :)

Yeah, some of the Shiki attacks really are strange and add to the odd aesthetic of the game, one of my favorites.

Bubble armor in Alpha Mission II, firing giant water bubbles (useless against practically everything but the mirrors) was a bit weird and almost out of place in the game.

there's a similar weapon in Gleylancer - sort of a light-saber coming from one or both of the satellites. Weird.

As far as Tyrian goes, I think the whole carrot ship thing gives the game charm, especially when shooting the hot dogs. Screw Hot Dog Storm - Tyrian's carrot ship w/ hotdog gun is more of a hotdog storm than the game w/ the same name! There are codes you can enter to play as a Dragon in Tyrian 2000 as well. Not to mention playing as a captured U-Ship.

You remind me to bring the Greater Maneki-Neko figure back to office and put it on my desk. Just hope that it could shield me from my boss. :o

Pretty much the entire Shiki series, IMO. Captain Tomaday takes the cake for me, though!
