Options for playing vertical PCBs

Post by Charlie97L »

Hey all, I'm looking for what everyone uses to play vertically oriented game pcb's in their supergun setup.

Do you all tate a monitor? (i know that's the best solution)

Do you use a scaler or some other device to rotate?

Thanks!

I just tip my PVM on its side. Being pretty much a cube, it rests very comfortably, and the handles make it easy to rotate. Once it's TATEd, I try to leave it like that for a while.

I just have two CRT's, one dedicated for hori's and the other for vert's. I used to flip my monitor when I wanted to play a vert but after a while it's just tiring (annoying? lol) to do so, especially when these broadcast monitors weigh a ton.

I do the same. PVMs and BVMs are decent if you can get your hands on one.

Yeah, I've got 2!

One is a 20 and my main gaming monitor, and I've got a 14.

I was hoping to get the arcade stuff going on either the hdtv with a scaler or the larger crt, but seems like tuning the monitor is the best solution!

Two is best of course! But for me not the same size, the landscape/normal crt can be as big as it can, 27" and up, but the one(s) I'll be using for tate rather 21"~25" max for my eyes/viewing comfort.

For the big flat TV crowd there's the expensive Datapath X4 (clean rotation at the cost of 1 frame of lag) Fudoh wrote an article about, or IIRC a couple of video capture cards that do the trick but I don't know how they compare to the X4.

For the LCD monitors crowd seeking to use a single display it's mostly about picking the best monitor that comes with VESA mounting they can find, and a good fully adjustable universal rotating stand or arm. Not so easy since finding a monitor that does it all is a long journey, and good rotating stands aren't that common anymore, especially when you need one for a large monitor (27"~32") and therefore with a reliable long-lasting mechanism.

I'm using a Iiyama ProLite XB2283HSU and so far it's great. Can't find any lag test but with the overdrive set to 3 (max) there's just a tiny bit of lag (that I can notice, at least).

I just use a Sony Trinitron CPD-9000 9" RGB monitor and an Amiga 1080 14" monitor and tate 'em on their sides for 'em vertical arcade shmup PCBs. Easy as pie. Konami's arcade PCB by the name of A-Jax/Typhoon (circa 1987) has built-in support for use on an upright arcade cabinet or even an old-school cocktail table arcade cabinet as well via dipswitch settings for both players 1 & 2. How cool is that?

I used to have an old school 19" Tenka CRT TV that only accepted RF as it's only input but it displayed the odd sync rates with the Seibu Kaihatsu SP1 motherboard along with Viper Phase 1 U.S.A. tilted on it's side vertically. I used a supergun with a S-Video cable fed into an S-Video to RCA composite video adapter, --> composite video cable that was piped into a A/C powered RF convertor box and had the resulting output RF cable fed into the TV itself. It worked like a charm with any arcade PCB thrown at it -- even the odd-synced Raiden II PCB would play on it with a stable (non-scrolling) and flicker free picture with no issues to contend with. The 19" Tenka TV was one of those old school CRT TVs that Macy's sold brand new back in the late 1980s (when they used to sell electronics back in the day).
