Sony BVM 20f1(e) syncing issue

Post by Kyranio »

Hello!

This is my first post on this forum, I hope I am posting this on the correct category, and that you can help me...

I have recently purchased a sony BVM 20f1e, which should be lovely to play retro games on, but I haven't got the cance to do so yet.
What ever I plug into the unit, RGB through BNC cables, or AV through composite...
The picture always pretty much looks like this:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=j0ebrwZu9zY

So, the unit has two seperate video input cards.
One of those only has RGB in and outputs.
The other has 3 composite in ports, plus another RGB set of ports (without a sync port).

The tube turns on, the menu is accessible but if I plug something into the unit it will go crazy aswell...
I thought, because the menu is displaying just fine (when nothing is plugged in) that the problem might've been on the first video input card. (the one without the composite ports, but just the RGB and sync ports.)

I opened the unit and I discovered that the card was directly connected to the CRT electron gun with four cables. (RGB and Sync).
I figured the signals would also enter this card from other cards...

Now I must admit I am not very familiar with electronics that much.
I have already tried replacing a capacitor on the video input card, which seemed to be faulty. But it didn't solve the problem.

It must be something else, but I thought before I go and mess around in an old (and probably pretty fragile) BVM, it might be a good idea to ask some people if they have a clue.

It's late, and as I am typing this on my mobile phone, I am getting realy tired.
Ask whatever you need to know, I hope you can help me.

Thank you in advance.

Have you set up the sync button correctly? Don't forget to press the shift button. And also make sure you have set up your input configuration in the on-screen menu.

The additional input card you have sounds like the 21D. The first 6 in/outputs are for SDI. You can't use those for composite video as far as I know. You plug the composite into one of the three RGB inputs.

If you're using a Scart to BNC breakout cable or adapter, make it's got the right signal direction. These are NOT bi-directional. They only work in one direction.

I also have two PVM units, and the scart to bnc cable always worked with those two.
I will check out the sync configuration thoroughly this evening to double check that the settings are setup correctly.

I would test Composite on the 21D card first just to make sure the monitor works, and rule out any RGB SCART to BNC adapter/break-out cables and such as being the problem. Here's directions I posted the other day - they're for a BVM-D20 so the menu screenshot might be ever-so-slightly different than yours, but you'll get the main gist:

Alright, thanks! I will try that out.

I tried configurating the CRT in that mode, and using the ports you described.

Here's a video on what happened...

As you can see, the unit does respond to the input, but it doesn't sync.

Hope you can do something with this...

If that console plays on a regular TV via Composite, then I don't think there's any other conclusion to come to except something is broke on your BVM. What that may be I'm the wrong person to ask.

Just to make sure, you do have 75R terminators on all the outputs?

I would try to test something with a component output. And only the the Y (green) connector coming from it. This allows you to test with the monitor set to internal sync without requiring a composite decoder as you do now.

If you can't get that to work, the the monitor is busted, but if it works we can take it from there.
