Mega Everdrive SMS pause button queries

Post by Syntax »

I've purchased a Mega everdrive and had some concern about the pause button being mounted on the cartridge.

From my 30 odd years of console experience I've found you don't touch the cart while playing a game, Has anybody had any issues with games freezing from moving the cart around while pressing the SMS pause button?

I use Nintendo Hori controllers rewired for my SMS games because its way cheaper than buying commanders, and leaves me with start and select to tinker with.

I was thinking of making a switch that cuts the megadrive controller "select" trace on the console and route the everdrive pause button to the nes controller start or select buttons.

The SMS reset button doesn't connect to megadrive cartridge pins at all does it? would be much neater than an external cable.
I'm guessing its all contained in the everdrive so ill probably have to install a lead that runs from the everdrive pause button to a jack on the megadrive, and route that to a 2 way switch on its way to player 1's "select" controller pin( I think its pin 7)

I'm not sure which cartridge slot pin triggers the SMS pause button.
But this is a standard official feature. Both Sega's model 1 and model 2 converters have the button mounted on the cartridge.

Yes but the converters have the pause button BEFORE the cartridge slot and the Mega Everdrive can play SMS games WITHOUT a convertor.

What it means is one of the pins in the Genesis cartridge slot is used to pause SMS games. The signal has to reach the console somehow.

The way Everdrive plays SMS games is something of a quirk, and doesn't work on all systems.
JVC X'eye can play SMS games using a direct converter. It will NOT however reset from Genesis mode to SMS mode.

I've had the system freeze or display a black screen at least once when I hit the pause button, but I learned to do it carefully. I haven't played SMS games on the Genesis in a while, but I don't recall needing to pause very often. In some games like The Dragon's Trap, I would open the inventory screen as a faux pause.

Ok so the SMS pause button on the power convertors is actually just grounding pin 11(a23) on the Mega Drive cart slot. Sincere apologies for doubting you @theclaw

If you wire 5v across a 4.7k resistor to pin 11(a23) wire that pin to one side of a momentary and ground to the other then you have a working sms pause button for your Mega drive.

But I don't know if having pin 11 held high puts the Mega drive in a sms state or not..
