Advice on Mega Drive/Genesis RGB Bypass

Post by evil_ash_xero »

I didn't even know this existed. I always found the picture to be a bit lacking, coming out of the Genesis.
I was looking at this page: http://retrorgb.com/genesisrgbbypass.html

I'm wondering if someone could recommend the amp I should get, and where to get it (a link would be super appreciated). I have a modder, but if you could let me know what stuff I would need for this (cables, etc.), I would give you my first born. That being said, I'm never having children.

Also, can I use the RGB cord that I have, or do I have to get something different.

I think René is currently working on what he calls the "triple bypass" for the Genesis, might be worth checking out.

Rene's RGB Triple bypass is what you want. The problem is that, while Rene has created the schematic for it. Nobody has actually put them into production yet. So here we are.... Once someone comes forward to get them put into production, im sure they will start selling really well.

I have a bunch of Genesis 2 mini-din connectors ready for when I can get my hands on one.

Oh OK. If anything pops up with this, somebody PM me. I'll probably lose track of this takes a long while.

I made these two boards:

RGBMD is basically an ArcadeTV's PCB revisited. It has a THS7374 onboard with selectable LPF and a sync buffer (though if you intend to use a 32X it's better to mantain the TTL csync, because the mixing encoder on 32X needs it).

Mega Amp Pro is a universal PCB, installable on any Mega Drive / Genesis consoles. It has all the inputs available (PSG, YM, 32X, SegaCD) and two different stereo outputs (standard AV out or RCA through the Mega CD model 2).
I decided to use Elna Silmic II Hi-Fi caps, they're very good!
You can choose between three different LPF filters: standard 3.50kHz (like Genesis model 1 first models), 24.50kHz for full spectrum, and also a mixed solution (3.50kHz from the AV and full range for RCA solution).

Here you can watch (and listen to) a comparison between default Genesis Model 1 or 2 and the Mega Amp Pro (setted to 3.50kHz, it's more crystal clear with 24.50kHz):

I know it's not an all-in-one solution, but I think that having multiple PCBs is better because someone could want to buy/install only certain hardware and maybe he's not interested in all the functionalities.

That said, I am not intended to let me publicize or anything else, just wanted to share with you guys my projects. :)

I hope you can appreciate the efforts.
