U.N. Squadron for SNES... sound issues?

Post by accaris »

I'm on my second copy of U.N. Squadron, because the sound effects have a strange amount of static/crackling, especially the explosions. I don't remember this ever happening, but it's not my TV, speakers, cables, or anything else about my setup (it could be the SNES itself?) I've swapped out everything, and nothing has improved the situation.

Furthermore, I started to look up videos on Youtube for the game. It seems I'm not the only one. You can really hear the static in this video:

And it's present in the explosions here too, just not as noticeable:

Is this bit-rot, maybe? An issue with 1-chip SNES or certain revisions of the game?

the first video you posted is an emulation. the second one looks like it probably is too - so no, it's not bit rot. this is just how the game sounds. i can confirm having run the ROM on an sd2snes cart. this game's sounds are exceptionally farty.

I just loaded it up on BSNES, and sure enough, the static is there too. So either the game has always been this way and I never noticed it, or there's something about about the sound handling on the original launch model SNES where it doesn't have the static. I'm going to find someone with a UN1 SNES and test the cart on there.

That's just how the sound effects are supposed to sound. There is nothing wrong.

yes, exactly. i have tested this on an original model super famicom, and all SNES models, to my knowledge, have the same sound chip, the S-SMP.
