Preventing corrosion on a Seimitsu LS-32

Post by Swevicus »

Dear Shmups Forum,

Is there any way I can prevent the Seimitsu LS-32 (and LS-32-01)'s steel shaft from corrosion/rust (you can thank Seimitsu for lacking the foresight and sense to produce, never mind include, a shaft cover for their most popular joystick, unless you get the LS-32-SC or LS-32-01-SC, which feature a unique shaft cover)? I've thought about spray painting it gold/silver or maybe spraying WD40 on it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yours sincerely,
Swevicus.

I once bought a stick with a rusty shaft and tried to spray it to make it nicer - well, the smooth surface of the shaft didn't allow the paint to hold very well. So if you try that I'd suggest applying a primer coating first. And I vote for silver, gold is just wrong imho.

I heard some guy got a fat straw (the kind you'd get with a boba drink) and cut it to size.

I haven't tried it myself.

Lack of shaft cover isn't the issue. In all my years of playing stick, I've never had a jlf rust. Have come across a few rusty ls-32 sticks though.

I wouldn't recommend painting it, as it'll rub off. I'd try laquer coating it. Tape the threads real good, dip the top half of shaft in laquer. Repeat as many times as needed to thicken the laquer. Cut tape off. Enjoy.

Actually, it's the shaft cover that enables corrosion. Hand sweat gets trapped between the plastic and shaft and it will inevitably lead to corrosion.

No shaft cover = no rust.

The shaft cover enables corrosion? How ironic. I never knew.
