Shmup replays on YouTube?

Post by Triple Lei »

Yeah, I know there was a "Shmup replays on Google Video?" thread, but I couldn't find it and YouTube is generally agreed to be better than Google Video anyway.

And yeah... I know no one needs help on the first stage of Einhander, but here's my vid on YouTube:

Some notes about YouTube:

They resize every movie. If your vids are 320x240 or 640x480 that'll be fine, but 240x320 and 480x680 (i.e., tate replays) will be squashed! Believe me, I tried... (so if someone can tell me how to resize my 480x640 vids into 320x240 while keeping the aspect intact by adding black borders to the sides in VirtualDub, that would be great...)

Also, it appears they set their 10 minute limit today, so I suppose replay videos on YouTube will have to be single levels anyway. I've already seen Ikaruga vids and that DOJ Hibachi vid by morimoto up there.

Anyway, be sure to check out my other vids... Tetris!

It's easy to add black borders with Vdub. I've done it before but I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll post how to do it when I get home in about 5 hours, but that's if somebody hasn't beaten me to it already...

It should be something like click on Video -> Add filter

Then double click on resize

There should be two sizes, the size of the playing area, and the size of the window itself... I'm not too sure right now but if you fool around with it then you should get it before I'm home.

edit1: you should tick the box for "expand and letterbox image"

Thanks for that, man. It turns out it was just a tweaking of what I was already doing whenever I burned videos with subtitles on to DVD (since the TV edges always crop the sides)... now I just gotta figure out the correct numbers and stuff. (I'll figure that out later!)

Thanks again... look for some of my poor Batrider gameplay on YouTube in the future!

Thanks for the link! OT, Rocckman Super Adventure looks pretty cool-like a rail shooter, although I'm told it's more like Dragon's Lair.

It's not Batrider, but Ibara...

As you can see I've successfully kept the aspect intact while adding borders of my own - all the more amazing when you consider the fact that I'm really not a math person! I'll leave the technical details in tiny font so as to not clutter up this post.... 8)

In VirtualDub I went to Video > Filters > Add > resize.

Since my replays are always 480x640, my goal was to shrink the video but keep the aspect intact by adding borders to the sides so YouTube wouldn't stretch the 240x320 video into a 320x240 video or something. I crunched the numbers and I got these:

- New width: 240
- New height: 320
- Filter mode: Precise bilinear (somewhere I read that Precise bilinear is the best for shrinking videos and Precise bicubic (A=-1.00) is the best for enlarging videos
- CHECK the box that says Expand frame and letterbox image (thanks iatneH!)
- Frame width: 426
- Frame height: 320

The result is a video that is 426x320 that keeps the 3:4 aspect intact. But what to do with those plain, ugly black borders? I crunched the numbers and found that each side is 93x320. After getting some pics I just added them by:

Video > Filters > Add > logo
- Logo image: add left pic
- Justification: ML

Video > Filters > Add > logo
- Logo image: add right pic
- Justification: MR

EDIT: I now use these numbers:
- New width: 360
- New height: 480
- Filter mode: Precise bilinear
- CHECK the box that says Expand frame and letterbox image
- Frame width: 640
- Frame height: 480

- border pic size: 140x480

EDIT: Vid updated, Virtualdub details changed

I think Batrider replays are very rare things on the internet, so if you put some of them on youtube or any elsewhere it woul'd be very appreciated (scuse for the slight ot)!!! :)

Thanks for the Vdub details! I haven't watched the replays but I'm interested to see how the added logo looks, since I've never fooled around with that stuff.
