Here's to hoping that the Metroid 2 remake is good. I really want a good Metroid again.
i thought it's only super missiles which piss phantoon off?

I was tempted to give that one the benefit of the doubt myself, until word got out of their latest amiibo shenanigans. Sorry, I'm sitting this launch out.

yeah the bosses in Super Metroid display a nice variety of combat tactics and behaviours. I feel like the boss fights are all fun and generally handled extremely well in that game. There are a few ones that catch you off guard on the first playthrough for sure! Including another notorious one, which I won't spoil for people new to the games but I'm sure you can guess which one it is
Spoiler
Golden Torizo catching your missiles and chucking them back at you. I flipped out first time I faced him and saw this, lol. This is brilliant.

the single dumbest reason i hear people consistently use as a reason they hate metroid other m is "samus is a badass bounty hunter, i just can't believe she would wait to have the orders before using her various suit powers".

riiiight. so you don't believe she would follow orders from whoever is employing her, but you have no problem believing that between each game she somehow loses all her powers and conveniently whatever planet she goes to is just littered with upgrades for her suit. makes sense.

One of them is artistic license with mechanics in order to make a game.

The other runs contrary or even ruins (depending on who you ask) the existing character.

I hate Other M because the first person mode feels half-baked and tacked on. Also, the exploration isn't really there.

The game and art design feels like a tired cliche. There's never anything as fascinating as Skytown.

Other M looks, feels, and reads like fan fiction.

One of those two actually makes the game fun. You are so missing the point, it's almost funny. It was better in the early games when they gave no explanation for the loss of power-ups. The designers knew that an explanation did not matter when the act of finding power-ups was one of the big draws of the game.

I'm not trying to say other m is a great game or anything (I do think it's alright though). The story is total bobbins, samus' character is all wrong and in general it's not very fitting as a metroid game.

No, they're both artistic license with mechanics in order to make a game. Like I said I don't think it's any harder (I actually think if anything it's easier) to suspend your disbelief that samus could follow orders than random alien worlds are just full of things that not only power her suit but just so happen to be perfect for over coming the obstacles the planet itself presents.

I also don't think anything that happened in any previous metroid game suggests samus would be uncooperative with orders from the galactic federation, who I assume are her primary employers.

There are plenty of reasons for not liking other m, this one is just bollocks.

Man. I'm not even a huge metroid fan yet to say the idea is total bollocks while also saying
" The story is total bobbins, samus' character is all wrong and in general it's not very fitting as a metroid game. "
just doesn't fit to me.

Samus you aren't allowed to use the item you have that would stop you dying in lava until i tell you you're allowed to. So just die in lava thx.

haha, yeah i get what you're saying, but to me they're both just abitrary ways of spacing out when you get upgrades during a game. in the context of a metroid game finding the upgrades in the environment is definitely better as it allows for you to take different routes... yadda yadda...but neither one makes any sense so to me it's just "oh this is how upgrades are spaced out in this game".

Wasn't it basically "turn all that funky shit off because this ship is knackered and I'm not sure what is/isn't going to be a bad idea. Also no power bombs because that'll straight up kill us all"? I don't recall it being that unreasonable in sentiment but the wording could have been better - but then the plot goes to great lengths banging on about this traitor then it goes alltheseotherguysaredeadsoit'sthisdudebutwe'redoingsomethingelsekthanksbye. So yeah better writing was needed all round but I don't think Samus' characterisation is as awful as the outrage suggested. Not being a longtime fan I hadn't made my own stuff up to be mad about - which seemed why most people were angry.

It was a fun game, though it was too handholdy for Metroid. The first person bits were okay but the pixel hunting segments were awful.

Other M's characterisation of Samus seems to be the result of its director reading the (entirely serviceable, as far as these things go) Fusion tie-in manga featuring rookie hothead Samus, thinking "Ooh guvna! I'd like to do sumfin like dat in me next game, like" then rehashing it beat-for-beat with a battle-hardened veteran Samus several years and countless missions down the timeline. The result is unparalleled cringe. I thought the Retsupurae was genuinely quite funny, at least.

I'm currently reading the 1994 manga and it's kinda... nice? correct me if I'm wrong people ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Can't speak for the Other M story and setting though, haven't played that. I don't doubt that it's cringey
