The reason to get the DS
The reason to get the DS
I've been a big booster of the DS since it was announced, since I really believe the gaming with a new user interface will break the stagnation, but since it came out there actually hasn't been any games that have really induced me to buy yet.
Well, that's changed. Move aside, Feel the Magic, Wario Ware, Mario 64 DS, even Yoshi Touch & Go.
Kirby the Magic Paintbrush: http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ds/atkj/about ... /movie.wmv
There's a bunch of other stuff I want too, but they're ages away - like Advance Wars.

The DS seems to impress me on a daily basis. I'm constantly finding games that scream in my ear "Innovation," games that, taken as a whole, present a damn fine case for Nintendo's gamble.
I remember when I heard about the DS, I was just confused. It seemed like a bad omen that even on paper it didn't seem like a good idea. Well, Nintendo, you beautiful bastards, I do not know how you did it, but you pulled together some amazing support for the DS.
It's settled, I shall purchase a DS. Nintendo, keep 'em coming, and keep marching to the beat of your own drum. Fuck the console wars, the general public sucks, you stick with it, keep pumping out great games that dare to be different. Sure, you'll stumble every so often, and you may even have a few spectacular failures, but at least you tried. No one can say you never took a chance. Chances are so rarely taken in today's gaming industry.

You might have some control over Kirby. He seems to use his powers, I can't imagine that's automatic.Vexorg wrote:OK, so if I'm understand this correctly, it looks like you have no direct control over Kirby besides what can be done with the paths you create. This should make for an interesting gameplay mechanic.
Pure speculation here.
I'm guessing if you tap Kirby himself, he'll either do a little attack spin if he has no powers or use his current power if he has one. (Not sure on this, but perhaps you need to spin into an enemy to grab its power.) Draw lines to guide Kirby around, and if you draw a loop Kirby will speed up and loop-de-loop. Plus it seems you can draw lines to block enemy attacks.
In any case, I'm far more impressed with this than Yoshi Touch and Go, simply because it seems to have far deeper gameplay mechanics and real level design.

posts like this really don't belong here...
I didn't hear anyone here worship the name of Sony when the eyetoy was released, yet all Nintendo has to do is release a crappy substitute for an analog stick and suddenly they're not in videogames to make a profit anymore.
That said, I've been tossing around the idea of getting a ds...since it's back compatible with the gba it could serve as a portable nes emulator. and then there's meteos...*drool*
Eh... this looks like the kind of game that'll be entertaining for the novelty value rather than the actual quality of the product.
I haven't really seen a compelling use of the touch screen yet. Nothing natural has come out... the games either have it shoehorned in there somewhere (Castlevania), or they're designed entirely around it not because it's the kind of game that seems like the dev wanted to make, but because the dev felt like they had to make a "touch screen game" (the Yoshi game).
Every game that's come out or been annouced feels like a justification of the touch pad after the fact rather than a natural utilization of it. Just imagine if the invention of the mouse led to platformers that you could only control with the mouse, or quirky little games that consisted entirely of moving it in circles and nothing else.
I'm sure that the touch screen can be a useful input device, and there are quite a few genres that could benefit from it. I'd just like to see real games being made using it instead of these glorified proof-of-concepts.

That said, yes, Quick-Draw Kirby (as it will be called in the US) looks great. I can't wait for summer! We get Meteos, Another Code 2 Memory, Bomberman DS, Nanostray... just... yay!

Agreed, the Eye Toy is pretty dumb. And this Kirby game looks pretty creative, the way you use the stylus-I'd hardly call the touch pad a crappy substitute for analog! You don't need analog for a 2D game like that anyway.
The only dumb thing, IMO about the DS is the fact that Nintendo wouldn't stick a Z80 in it. As for the expense argument, how friggin' expensive could an out-of-date processor like the Z80 possibly be?

No, it was fucking stupid when Disney did it, it was fucking stupid when Sega did it (at least I think they did it in Japan at some point), and it was STILL fucking stupid when Sony finally got around to doing it.Neon wrote:Exactly, but if Nintendo made it, it'd be 'innovative.' You of all people should know this.Because the Eye Toy is fucking stupid.
The touch screen has added a new element to games that doesn't involve me throwing my arms around looking like a moron, so fuck off.

I don't see how anyone who has the remotest interest in video games could hate Nintendo. They may very well be going down the Sega road, but they also single-handedly rescued video games from oblivion with the NES, twenty years ago.
It doesn't matter what system the Eye Toy is for, IMO, it's a stupid camera device that offers a lot less interactivity then the DS's touch pad and stylus.

A. that's untrue;I don't see how anyone who has the remotest interest in video games could hate Nintendo. They may very well be going down the Sega road, but they also single-handedly rescued video games from oblivion with the NES, twenty years ago.
B. They're back to being noble heroes again. They're a company and they're in videogames to make money.
I don't have anything against nintendo, I don't really like them either though. Zelda games have always sucked, same with metroid. Seem to be popular thanks to marketing.
