Shmup player endearing movies

Post by PooshhMao »

Hi,

Yesterday I got to see the movie Stealth, and while hardly intellectually stimulating, REALLY entertained :D the Talon planes really reminded me of Super Aleste's protagonist ship, and the movie's obviously thoroughly inspired by Macross, Plus especially.

Too bad the movie bombed, I guess high tech AI driven fighter jets are out of fashion, people just want orcs and trolls and living trees and wizards which can magic themselves back to life nowadays. Sigh.

There have been threads of shmup-based or shmup-like animes before (of which there are plenty - there's Macross of course, and the awe-inspiring Battle Fairy Yukikaze), but never movies.

So come on, which movie has content shmup fans are likely te enjoy, and why? (I suspect people will come up with Top Gun, Firefox and Iron Eagle, but I don't mind, go nuts :)

There is a Gunhed film. It's generally unrelated, but interesting enough - if very firmly in B movie territory.

Nah, I just couldn't think of any nifty shmup movies.

The Last Starfighter was good fun though.

+1 for "Tron" !
"The last starfighter" should be seen for historical reasons
"Spun" is great, even better than Wonderland, esp. if you know speedheads or are one yourself, but i don't see how it relates to mushi !? ;)

"Electric Dreams" ain't bad too, a masterpiece of oldskool geekery (not shmuppy).
"The Mysterians", the earth is under attack !
"Battlestar Galactica" (the movie) if you like Dangun Feveron :D (of course, don't miss the recent series)

WWII Air Force propaganda movies. I've seen a bunch of these, and they're entertaining.

Anyone see The Aviator? That movie he makes at the beginning (Hell's Angels) looks like the ultimate shmup movie. I'd never heard of it up until then. I always thought someone should make a WWI based shmup - the only ones I can think of are Blue Max and the shooting parts of Cinemaware's Wings.

There are scenes from a Japanese movie in the video for Mindphaser by Front Line Assembly that is interesting. The movie seems to be about a futuristic tank infiltrating some fortress. Reminded me a little of Granada.

I don't know the name of the movie.

I hate the new Battlestar Galactica. What are the chances of distant humans searching for Earth having identical technology (wall plugs, various tools) and clothing (business suits) to us? The whole premise of "Cylons can now look and act human" is another way of saying "we can't afford too many scenes with CG robots or we refuse to use men in robot suits because that's cheesy". Um, the original Battlestar was all about cheesy. That's what made it great. To it's credit though, the new series has some ok space battles.

I love Tron and all, but aside from the computer graphics, I don't see how it can be shmup-like.

Personally I found Yukikaze to be a bit boring... but I only sat through the first episode. Maybe I'll watch more if you say it's so good.

On the other hand, I almost shat my pants with joy from Macross Zero.

*thumbs up, good stuff. (big fla fan)

there are some scenes that stand out in my mind of stuff that relates to shooters, there was some anime short film from the 80's that was about some type of racing in the future, and there was just lots of intense shots of the pilots of these vehicles, also the fluke atom bomb video had the footage of that chick piloting the vehicle which always reminds me of shooters.

What does Tron have to do with shooters? Well check out the Space Paranoids floating tank scene. The light cycles are rather cool action game things too (not technically shooters). I mean the whole movie is about people living in what is basically a giant video game.

Of course The Last Starfighter is more "shooty".

Probably "Running Man", directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri. I first saw it on Liquid Television and found it rather disturbing. It is part of the anthology film Neo-Tokyo which has been shown on The Anime Network recently.

The character is supposed to be Arial Tetsuo from WipeOut. I used to be a fan of hers back when it mattered. Damn I wish I could get the whole video. No one answers my emails about it. How do you get old music videos anyway????

The footage is from the movie Gunhed, with some shots of Bill Leeb mixed into it.

Well frankly, I didn't like the non-action parts of Yukikaze all that much either. I just can't bring myself to giving a damn about what happens to the plain and uninteresting characters - but the wooshy zappy bits, wow.

I've watched the first half hour of Sky Captain and then went on to do something more fun (playing Juno First I believe)

I recall seeing the Last Starfighter, but that had too high a white picket fence playing-catch-with-dad-in-the-frontyard element too it.

Sigh, 70's/80's movies - heroes weren't necessarily fashion models, they swore, they had selfish motives, they smoked, they complained.

OK, brace yourself:

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha.

Sounds like the least shmuppy show you could think of, right? Watch the series and then think again. (Watch it and then play Cotton or, better yet, a Shanghai Alice game, for best results.)

I seriously believe that it would make an awesome Senko no Ronde-alike, and a pretty decent shmup (assuming one could come up with a good excuse to have a multitude of popcorn baddies).

What about near the end of Moonraker? That's a pretty good astronaut laser fight.

There's another Bond movie that had Bond blowing up MASH style choppers while flying a yellow gyrocopter.

The Running Man is the movie that Smash TV stole it's plot from. The Smash TV developers even admitted it in an interview. It might not be shooter inspired, but it is shooter inspiring.

Ye Olde thread I know, but I just stumbled upon it.

2001: A Space Odyssey - The bit with the tunnel of lights near the end has a real bullet hell feel to it...

The Right Stuff - chasing the demon sequences when it goes all strange when the planes breach the sound limit...

Hell's Angels - 1930 WWI movies filled with amazing, hectic air combat scenes. Plenty of stuntmen got killed in that movie...

THANK YOU

So yeah, I also vote for ORIGINAL Galactica. The myriad space dogfights in the show had an awesome shmuppy feel, tons of lasers and dodging everywhere, even if they blatantly re-used scenes from the first episode in pretty much every subsequent one to save money.

These two share the same actress. Hot Shots is more like a run & gun though.

How come no one has mentioned Star Wars yet? To obvious I guess.

Wing Commander lol

Also Flight of the Navigator? It was a bit wet, so perhaps there weren't any lazers in it. Can't remember. Awesome film though.

Equilibrium is the closest thing I've seen to a shmup in movie format.
