Need a laptop

Post by Stevens »

Since mine is about to take a shit I figure it better to start researching now. Any recommendations?

Doesn't have to be beastly (I'd like to spend less than $800), but should do things like run MAME and newer sprite based stuff.

Thanks in advance.

TLDR a mame-only laptop would be way weaker and cheaper than one for varied playing.

Long story running mame is an entirely different league than running today's sprite games, sadly.

To elaborate, I have a computer of 10+ years that will run 90% of mame with zero issues, but on Guilty Gear X2#R, a good example of a beefy sprite game, it already starts lagging and the processor cries, to say nothing of newer games.

I'd gladly search up some specs since I use a cool laptop that itself cost me I about 700$, but before I do, I had to point out that your purposes for it don't warrant the same builds at all.

As a side note though, there's still a good amount of "new sprite stuff" that isn't intensive, but I assume you wouldn't want to be limited with that.

Thanks for taking the time.

Your assumption is correct. I would be looking for one for varied playing as you put it. Out of curiosity what do you have? Tech is not my strong suit:D

Also forgot to mention looking for one on the larger end. 17 inch screen is preferable.

for mame single thread performance is key, as such always go for an intel cpu over amd. newer 2d games still shouldnt require anything more than two cores.

i would recommend you check the below link and go for the highest score that your budget allows.

^ yah good single thread performance is #1 issue. around 2000 maybe or close maybe?
Dunno what mobile CPUs from Intel are the most in view at the moment though...a few years ago a 2000 STP score with a mobile CPU meant very high end.

#2 or equally important is the display: avoid sub-HD resolutions and make your mind between matte or glossy (less reflections VS. clearer/cleaner picture)

(panel type: yeah well with your budget anything other than TN is unlikely except on significantly smaller laptop/tablet hybrids)

EDIT: something like this kinda fits the beefy generic all-rounder / cheap entry-level for little gaming model, wouldn't you say? : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834315925
Or am I completely behind the times? the problem with better CPUs (like the Intels ending in 'HQ') is that they're only featured on models easily over $800~900.

Thanks for all the help everyone. I have done a fair amount of research, upped my budget a bit, and have it down to three choices. The last of was Xyga's suggestion.

Thanks!
