Ive just gotten back into purchasing a few games after a couple of years away from it all.
Lately have gone a bit crazy on buying Cave pcbs... (The prices have sky rocketed )
However I was thinking about previous Shmup titles I've owned.
Got me thinking how I regret selling Muchi Much Pork and Guwange. I kind of want to accomplish a complete Cave PCB collection but I might have to sell a kidney - arm and a leg to achieve it - it seems.
I mostly regret selling Ibara. It was my first PCB. I got into arcades as a hobby after falling in love with the visuals on youtube etc. Bought a full kit for a whopping $200 and change on Yahoo Auctions back in... 2008? 2009? And I'm sure I'll never see it for that price again, haha.
I had purchased an old wooden arcade cab for like $50 to try and play it on, only to find there wasn't room in the cab to tate the monitor. Ended up selling it to fund Deathsmiles a little down the road rather than find a new cab.
I have only really sold shmups that I have more than one copy of so it was out of space-necessity that I sold some shmups. But going back a few years I regret selling a pristine yoshi's Island in the mid 2000s but I was a poor student and needed the cash

Ha! I just bought Ibara - waiting on its arrival. Wish mine was only $200!
I remember the old prices back in the day. Its quite mind boggling seeing what they fetch now.
The N64 was not a console that had many (if any?) shmups released in North America, but here's a "I regret selling this" story for you. When I was young, I really liked Nintendo. I was given an NES as a hand-me down with a bunch of games, but I was always sad that we didn't have the money to afford getting an SNES or a Game Boy, so for a long while there was an entire generation of games I simply didn't have access to.
When the N64 was being advertised, I asked my parents for it for Christmas. And lo and behold they got me a brand-spanking new N64 for Christmas. It was magical, owning a brand new console, with amazing games. I played the heck out of Super Mario 64, which is still one of the best 3D platformers ever made.
But I was young and stupid.
Years later, with a large collection of games, I tried out a Playstation at a friend's place. I fell in love with the large scale environment of Grand Theft Auto as well as Twisted Metal. On an impulse, I sold my N64 and all the games (including the racing ones I played with my dad - I'll never forget that look of disappointment) just to get a Playstation.
It was really, really stupid, and in all honesty was probably the dumbest mistake I've made ever. Not just because of the nostalgia of selling The Console My Parents Bought Me but because I still liked the games and obviously wanted to play them again, so my short-sightedness made me re-buy the games I used to own out of sheer guilt along with another N64. I still feel really guilty for doing it in the first place, like serious gnawing pangs.
Don't sell your entire console collection on a stupid whim; you'll probably want to replay them again. Same goes for good books; it's satisfying pulling them off the shelf and rereading them again.

A shorter story:
One time a friend of mine traded in his copy of Bayonetta to buy some stupid Tiger Woods golf game, I hope he felt the same way I did selling my N64.
In the late 90's I picked up Blazing Star AES for $240; I was turned off by the fact you could credit-feed all the way through so within a month I sold it for $360. I was like woo-hoo!!! I just turned a profit!!!
Another Neo game I would like to have another chance at not selling is Last Resort. Three Saturn games I wish I hadn't sold: Radiant Silvergun, Battle Garegga and Hyper Duel. These titles I would love to re-visit...but I can't. Ever.
I regret selling Ibara (PS2) to someone here for around $50. I rebought it on eBay for $150. At least this time I got that little booklet.
That, and Armed Police Batrider. Bought and sold it for like $100. But it was the international version (or at least not the Japan version) so whatevs.
Yes, I regret selling my Vectrex console that I bought brand new back in September of 1984 for a mere $50. I sold it for a mere $50 with five games + original box and all accompanying bit 'n' pieces with the games + original boxes + original screen overlays -- everything was in super mint condition. The lady that bought the entire Vectrex set from me (back in December of 1987), said that her son wanted to play his favorite Vectrex games and needed a Vectrex controller to be able to do so again (in retrospect, the lady & her son had gotten a very good deal/bargain if you were to ask me).
Fast forward to August of 1998, I managed to buy a used Vectrex console for $115.00 USD at a video game auction (but it came with no games or even a screen overlay whatsoever). Had to break down and buy one of those Sean Kelly produced Vectrex Multi-Carts to tide my over as far as playing Vectrex games.
Came across an eBay auction for a brand new Vectrex controller and ended up paying $225.00+ USD for it back in 2000 -- was worth it back in the day (considering how hard it was to get such a brand new & boxed Vectrex controller that was 18 years old at that particular point in time).
So yes, I recall taking very good care of my original Vectrex console & regretted selling it since then. I do have two Vectrex consoles currently (both in used condition, of course) -- one's been professionally adjusted/calibrated to be the best in terms of visual vector graphics (by Dan Kramer, father of the Atari 5200 & 2600 Trakball controller) and the other, as a backup if it needed be (knock on wood). The visuals on the backup Vectrex isn't up to par like with my first Vectrex console though.
I was told during the early 1990s, on some BBS sites, there were people buying and selling Vectrex consoles at a whopping $1,000 USD back in the day. Holy shit!
I regret selling The Great Ragtime Show. Gameplay-wise it's not that amazing, but I love the art style and all the detail. Plus it's just very hard to find.
Not myself. But my friend sold an entire Japanese Saturn collection of 30 games plus system for a brand new Sony PSP on launch. Not only did he have a whole bunch of shooters but he had some of the 4mb fighting games as well.
I told him at the time "your an idiot". I bet a 100 thats the biggest mistake he ever made game wise.
For myself. I had a neo cd version of that brikinger game, saturn RSG, sold Battle Garegga on here etc. Lots of lost treasures.
I bought 2 cave kits from here for pretty cheap. I sold them 3 years later for £300+ £400+ each I think. Mushimesama 1.0 and Ibara.
On the plus side i've still got ESP ra.de and DDP, which I prefer old school anyway. Just not worth as much.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.
Once in a while I think about a few shmups like Espgaluda 2 and Mushihimesama Futari, wondering what I missed by not giving them more of a chance.
In general I'm in the process of getting out of the "collecting" side. The kinds of junk I've bought then never used is too much to let happen again anytime soon.
I'd better get my Urusei Yatsura DVDs back before their second hand market state goes the way of Maison Ikkoku...
Just reading through: there is a lot of talk of regret having sold ibara. I could never let mine go as it is such a good game. For me I never really sold games because I had to really but I can see how it would make some difficult decisions for gamers.
I should of never of sold any Cave , Psikyo , Raizing PCB , Saturn and Dreamcast games. All huge mistakes.
A Hardcore gamers reaction to the Lack of Kinect games.Apparently i could of played Dodonpachi with it if i beat a entirely in Japanese Visual Novel piece of shit game called Instant Brain

Radirgy, incidentally. I let the DC port go way too soon - aesthetically it did little for me, and I didn't grasp its rather nice Takumi/Compile hybrid until looking up some superplays, reading some threads and revisiting a bootleg copy. Like many things in life, it's so much more satisfying when you're wolfing down truckloads of pills. Hardly the most elusive or pricey STG even now, of course, even just on the DC. Largely why I've put off reacquiring it for so long.

Just get Milestone Collection Vol. 2 for Wii. (You do have Wii, don't you?)
I think I regret selling (or trading Blastwind) not because it skyrocketed now in price but because I never tried getting another copy while I was in Japan. They were everywhere so I thought it'd be easy to get another copy but I just forgot about it. My biggest regret though is losing almost all my gaming collection that I've built while stationed there. I sent all of it home in 3 boxes and only 1 box made it back. Thankfully, it was the one box that contained my sega saturn US games, schmups(at least the most valuable ones) and US PS1 games. Unfortunately the other boxes contained my import consoles, ps1 import games, numerous other import sega saturn. and gaming collectibles.
Dragon Blaze PS2, simply because I saw that the price had risen so high online and would be better off just playing it via Mame. Not only do I regret selling it, but it also taught me an important lesson about the difference between the price of something and how much you truly value it. Now I think far, far more carefully about what I do and don't sell from my collection!

Ha! Yeah its a wonderful game.
I once sold a copy of Kirby N64 Pal Australian version - complete mint for $40. Cant get that for under $500+ now.
I also sold a brand new never used N64 pal Pokemon console boxed special edition with Pokemon VHS tape for $90.
Around 13 years ago, I had a massive collection, and do to splitting with my first partner, had to get rid of the lot.
Bunch of Saturn's (Skeleton/White/UK) and some 150 games, PCE and 50 games, Neo and 25 games.... gutted wasn't the word. Actually sold Waku Waku 7 and Metal Slug 3 for around £350 for the pair on the old boards here.
Recently got rid of a PAL DC collection and didn't do my research.... lost out by hundreds because I needed the cash quickly.
In terms of something I actually, genuinely miss, Border Down. Loved that game.
