I know -- I saw it. I would hardly call it uneventful though.

Spider Man: Homecoming: ***
Very average for an MCU movie, but even the average MCU movies are much better than the dumpster fire that is the average X-Men movie or most of the recent Spider Man ones. In much the same way Ant Man had only one Avenger (and a second-stringer at that) show up basically to say they had an Avenger in it, It was just a little too obvious that they only had one Avenger available here (If you don't count the semi-random and non story relevant Captain America cameo) even if it was Iron Man. Guess they blew the budget for that on Civil War...
Some funny parts in this one, but it also dragged a bit as well.

The average MCU movie is fucking intolerable boring garbage. I thought several of the X-Men movies (Apocalypse aside) were far more entertaining than the formulaic crap Marvel keep churning out.
That said I hear Wonder Woman is absolute trash, so perhaps DC are finally discovering the mass market.

Time for Summer, i guess. Watched both Rise of The Planet of the Apes (2011) and Dawn of The Planet of the Apes (2014), and enjoyed them both. The small references on Rise of the original 1969 movie were nicely done, and it was good to see John Lithgow again. Andy Serkis's motion work was also great.
Still early for a home release of War, so i'll wait on that one.

Punch-Drunk Love (2002) - Paul Thomas Anderson
Felt like a "short" and I mean that in a good way. Enjoyable "experience".
Adam Sandler kept his character tight. He could easily have gone too goofy. Impressed with the way he handled it.
Emily Watson gives an intimidating masterclass. As an actress, she is fearless. I remember seeing her years ago in Breaking the Waves (1996) - Lars von Trier . A film that, especially if you see it during your formative years, has a very good chance of leaving scars.
Philip Hoffman. Excellent. Still hard to believe that we wont be seeing him again.
I believe the only Paul Thomas Anderson film that I have not seen at this stage, is Boogie Nights (1997). Marky Mark plays John Holmes? Pass.

The point of my post is that one man's negative opinion on something that many people really like isn't the gospel just because it's being repeated over and over. I for one am very entertained by the MCU and will gladly watch them over and over. In short, I disagree with Skykid's opinion regarding the MCU.Durandal wrote:what is the point of this post

I liked the dogfights in Scarif and Krennic's uniform. The rest of the movie was a bit dull, i'm afraid.

Don't knock him -- the guy can be directed, and he is not bad in it. I'd go so far as to say good. I think that's the role that got people to take him seriously. Burt Reynolds and Julianne Moore's performances are better, but even so, there's nothing really bad about the film. I watched it this past winter w/ the GF. Remember though, I'm the guy that still wears the striped levi's, so obviously I have a bias towards things done well from that era. As a bonus, Phillip Seymour Hoffman & William H. Macy, although smaller roles, are also worth mentions.Zen wrote: I believe the only Paul Thomas Anderson film that I have not seen at this stage, is Boogie Nights (1997). It does feel more like it's aimed towards the more casual than something like The Master or to a lesser extent Punch Drunk Love. (read: period piece... lots nostalgia throwbacks in the form of soundtrack & fashion). I've not seenPunch Drunk Love in ages, but I like what I remember... and I also remember it being Adam Sandler's first serious (major) role and him doing just fine. It's 2.5 hours of your life... you've definitely wasted worse on it.

Baby Driver - 4/5
Great cast, well directed, cut and musically supervised. No big surprises plot-wise, which in itself is a bit of a double-edged sword, since you don't get wowed the first time, but may grow on you on repeat viewings. The dialogue was decent and felt real enough too. The menaces were a bit flat though.

Oh man, I'm at home in that era. Anything 70's, I'm there, fuggedaboutit! Its Wahlberg. He's such a disgusting human being. Maybe thats the reason he (and Burt Reynolds) was cast, I dunno. Fuck it.GaijinPunch wrote:Don't knock him -- the guy can be directed, and he is not bad in it. I'd go so far as to say good. I think that's the role that got people to take him seriously. Also, not quite sure whats going on with the porn motif in Paul Thomas Anderson films. I'm hoping its something more cerebral than the schmoe like cringe of say, Frank Miller.
I guess what I'm saying is, my impression (and I may be completely wrong here) is that the only one getting fucked in Boogie Nights, is the viewer.
I'll man-up and give it a watch. How bad can it be? Cheers, GaijinPunch.

I suppose I shouldn't have to tell Skykid to avoid the latest Spider-Man. While it did have a lot going for it, it's too flawed for me to give an honest recommendation. Then again, I prefer more camp and melodrama in my superhero fare, so...

Did you really think that the primary guy and chick were that great? I liked the rest of the cast a *heck* of a lot better than them. Now, granted, I'm sure that part of the reason is the script, but still: they can't be completely absolved of the blame.emphatic wrote:Baby Driver - 4/5

Re: Movies you've just watched
With only a few exceptions, I agree with this. I have *zero* understanding as to why this movie was raved over. Aside from some one-liners from the android and the Vader scene at the end, I found the whole thing more than just a little bit tedious. At the end, I was left wondering how anyone could have thought it was even "good". If I'm inclined to be generous, it might be considered passable, but again: that's being generous. I've seen Ewok movies that were far better than this one.Skykid wrote:Rogue One was crap.

Well, their innocent faces and the flirting was near perfect IMHO. She looked like a young Mädchen Amick and while he had some annoying stuff going on, it was because the script put it there. Well that is the general level of film appreciation these days, so it's not surprising. 90% of people can't see the woods for the trees when they watch cookie cutter junk posing as a production, so it's down to the minority to resolutely preach truths.emphatic wrote: Regarding Rogue One, a friend of mine says he thinks it's the best Star Wars movie ever.

The Dunwich Horror
A Roger Corman production.
After a rather hilarious beginning featuring Wilbur Whateley visiting Miskatonic University it gets serious, following typical horror movie patterns: there's a lot of sex in the air (a naive MU librarian falls in love with Wilbur Whateley and dreams of interesting "fertility" rituals), Wilbur lives until the end and becomes a villain protagonist, Armitage is a decisive but minor character.
For obvious budget reasons the appearance of Yog-Sothoth is pathetic, with the invisible Whateley brother only marginally less pathetic, but for the most part the cheap special effects are appropriately psychedelic and the music and Whateley's lines are appropriately morbid.
There's a good action scene when Wilbur steals the Necronomicon from the MU library; he succeeds (instead of dying and being examined), but there's some egregious tense violence.

Raw (2016) - Julia Ducournau
97% fresh on Rotten tomatoes?
7.1 on IMDb?
81 metascore?
Do not believe the hype. Pedestrian French horror film. The vegetarian angle had something going for it but they wasted it. Eminently forgettable.
On the plus side; its whetted my appetite to re-watch the superb Ravenous (1999)- Antonia Bird. Almost two decades later and the theme "Boyd's Journey" is still stuck in my mind.

Baby Driver
Edgar Wright is such a superb film maker, in that he writes, directs and completely controls all aspects of his product, and does it well. It's nice to see that kind of control; those little purposeful things like camera placement and actor direction, as opposed to "we need seventeen cameras for this shot so we can choose the angles we want, and don't worry about the background, we'll paint that in later; and don't worry about the guy you're punching either because he'll be painted in in post production... Ok guys, let's get this in one, Action!"
Baby Driver is first and foremost too cool for school. It's not steeped in reality in any way: it's all comic book, and shares some commonalities with Tarantino in that respect. The protagonist is like an 80s underdog superhero with the power to drive like a demon, and that's all you need to know. That aside it's well cast, brilliantly written, and handled with the same kind of energy and pizazz one comes to expect from Wright.
Most plz!

Have always enjoyed this one, and glad to finally own it. Harrison Ford does a good job, even if it isn't as faithful to the book as you'd like it to be.

Re: Movies you've just watched
I found that it tried a bit too hard to be dark... ironically, the performances out basically the entire cast is leaps and bounds above the usual star wars performance. It was a fun ride (cool action) but I guess in the end I didn't really have any type of emotion when when anything good or bad happened to any character. A far cry from what I felt when Luke got his hand cut off, Han was frozen, or when Leia wore her slave outfit.copy-paster wrote: Uh, so Rogue One gets a lot of hate here.
